The musicians on Stretching Out constitute an authentic "who's who" of jazz. The album pays homage to music that predates the participating players, and even the newer tunes (like those by Bill Potts and Brookmeyer himself) are well rooted in the beginnings of jazz and intend to recreate the New Orleans spirit. However, none of the musicians here are limited to imitating ancient styles. Instead, Bob Brookmeyer, Zoot Sims, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Al Cohn, Hank Jones, Freddie Green, Eddie Jones and Charlie Persip create fresh new music on this session, recorded right after the bebop era at the end of 1958.
