With Silk and Sand, the French-Vietnamese guitarist Nguyên Lê returns to the classic trio format that has characterised his career. Together with Canadian bassist Chris Jennings and Moroccan percussionist Rhani Krija, he creates a musical journey between jazz, world music and improvised sound art.
The album moves in a fascinating way between gentle, almost floating melodies (Moonstone, Becoming Water) and dynamic, rhythmically complex pieces (Tiger's Dance, Baraka). Nguyên Lê's virtuoso guitar playing is sometimes lyrical and narrative, sometimes explosive and full of energy. Jennings' bass provides a rich, melodic foundation, while Krija's multi-faceted percussion enriches the sound with Arabic, African and Oriental influences.
The title Silk and Sand perfectly reflects the sonic concept of the album: a balance between fine, flowing elegance and the raw, earthy depth that can be felt in the music. It is a work full of musical colours and emotions - a harmonious interplay between three masters of their craft that dissolves the boundaries between genres and transports the listener to distant soundscapes.
For lovers of world music, jazz and atmospheric soundscapes, Silk and Sand is a must - an album that invites you to dream, savour and discover.
