Every house is built on a foundation — and the foundation of any serious hi-fi system is how it is set up. Whether on a dedicated hi-fi rack or on regular furniture: only a truly settled platform ensures that mechanical vibrations don't couple unimpeded into sensitive components. What the ear perceives as soft bass, lost contour or a diffuse soundstage often has its origin exactly there: in microphonic effects that turn structure-borne noise into electrical interference — stamping their signature on the music signal before the amplifier ever sees it.
The Lehmannaudio 3S isolation bases tackle exactly this root cause — with a consistency you might expect from dedicated high-end tuning specialists rather than the Cologne-based headphone-amp and phono-stage maker. Norbert Lehmann, known for decades for compact reference electronics such as Black Cube, Decade and Linear, has been placing his own top models on 3S feet for years. The logical next step: a fully-fledged equipment base that concentrates the entire decoupling technology in a hybrid layout just 20 mm tall.

A hi-fi system is a chain of precision instruments — and precision instruments dislike vibration. The turntable makes this obvious: the stylus tracks groove modulations in the micrometre range, and every additional vibration that couples from the surface into the drive is interpreted by the cartridge as music. The result isn't louder, it's blurrier: transients lose their edge, the soundstage loses depth, bass softens where it should be defined.
But the effect is equally measurable and audible with tube amplifiers, phono stages, DACs and streamers. Components are set into motion by structure-borne sound — a phenomenon known as microphonics — where mechanical movement translates into electrical disturbance that overlays the music signal. An effective equipment base interrupts this transmission chain before it even begins. The benefits in detail:
1. Vibration decoupling and reduced microphonics. Structure-borne noise and low-frequency airborne sound are intercepted before they can turn into electrical interference inside the electronics.
2. Improved soundstage and detail resolution. Suppressing parasitic vibration has a particularly pronounced effect on time-domain parameters — spatial imaging, stage width and depth, timing and transient response all gain clarity and composure.
3. Extended component lifespan. Drive bearings, tube sockets and other mechanically stressed parts measurably benefit from reduced vibration exposure.
Visibly, the 3S base is a three-layer constrained-layer sandwich: two panels of CDF (Compact Density Fiberboard) — a fibreboard noticeably denser and sonically more neutral than standard MDF — enclose a damping core of heavy polymer foil. This principle converts vibration energy into heat instead of passing it through, and has been an established technique in acoustic engineering for decades. Lehmannaudio, however, refines this foundation with one decisive addition.
Inside the base sits an additional magnetically and electrically shielding layer, just 0.4 mm thick and itself built from 20 individual plies. This layer captures what mechanical decoupling alone cannot address: electromagnetic interference from transformers, power supplies or nearby electronics. Sensitive phono stages and analogue sources benefit particularly — a chassis that sits quietly not only mechanically but also electromagnetically.
Below the sandwich — in varying numbers depending on base size — sit the eponymous 3S fabric discs (the name stands for "String Suspension System"). They decouple the base from the surface below via a spring-loaded fabric resting on small cork pads. The cork dampens the last remaining residual vibration and simultaneously protects sensitive furniture surfaces. The entire assembly stands just 20 mm tall — a figure that lets the 3S base slip into almost any rack space where other platforms would long since run out of room.
Visually, the base is deliberately restrained: a matte black surface, softly chamfered edges, a fine milled detail in the centre and a recessed metal Lehmannaudio emblem as the only signature. A piece of furniture that stays beneath the component rather than competing with it for attention.
All three 3S bases share identical construction, the same depth of 380 mm and the same 20 mm height — they differ only in width and permissible load. The range thus covers virtually any component size, from the slimmest headphone amp to the most imposing mass-loader turntable.
3S Basis 150 — 150 mm wide, load capacity up to 25 kg. Tailored for compact components: phono stages, headphone amps, power supplies, smaller DACs. Two placed side by side make an elegant foundation for a component with a separate power supply.
3S Basis 300 — 300 mm wide, load capacity up to 50 kg. The middle size for mid-width integrated amplifiers, CD players, streamers and many tube amps.
3S Basis 480 — 480 mm wide, load capacity up to 75 kg. The large stage for turntables, mass-loader decks, generous power amplifiers and any wide-format high-end component in standard equipment width.
Each of the three sizes is also available as an SE variant with an optional bottom plate. This additional plate carries the same number of 3S fabric discs on its upper side — decoupling is thus cascaded, working in two consecutive stages. Total height grows only to around 30 mm. German audio magazine lite reported in its March 2026 review of the 3S Basis 300 SE that playback gained noticeably in purity, calm and coherence, with music emerging from an even blacker background — a gain in clarity, resolution and detail one hardly expects after the already-convincing standard version.
The Music Box in the Carton
An unusual and charming detail: every 3S base ships with a small hand-crank music box. The reason isn't nostalgia but physics. Place the music box directly on the support surface and turn the crank — the entire surface transmits the vibration and the melody becomes clearly audible, because the top acts as a resonating board. Move it onto the 3S base and crank again, and the music box falls almost silent: the structure-borne sound no longer gets through. For anyone wanting to demonstrate what an equipment base actually does, the most convincing piece of evidence is right there in the box. And, incidentally, one of the most inspired ideas a manufacturer has ever had for a vibration platform.
The sonic effect of the 3S base isn't so much a "more of something" as a "less of what doesn't belong in the music". German magazine lite captured that character precisely in its review of the 3S Basis 480: playback was freed of midrange smear and bass excess, voices and instruments stood more present and tangible, and the imagined stage gained depth, becoming almost immersive in its portrayal. What may initially sound like the usual hi-fi poetry turns out, in direct comparison, to be audible and measurable.
Turntables show the effect particularly clearly: the stage stabilises, fine detail emerges more distinctly, bass tightens and gains contour. Tube amplifiers sound more effortless, digital sources gain a quieter background. The rule of thumb: the more sensitively a component responds to its environment — which applies to essentially every high-quality device — the greater the audible gain.
