02 · Materials
Which material protects how?
Not all film is the same: the material determines clarity, feel and, above all, whether a sleeve will protect your collection for decades.
| Material | Properties | Recommendation |
| Polypropylene (PP) | crystal-clear, brilliant look, slightly stiffer | outer sleeves when you want the cover to stand out |
| Polyethylene (PE) | soft, supple, matt to clear | outer and inner sleeves for everyday use |
| Lined inner sleeve | acid-free paper with a smooth, anti-static plastic liner | ideal for valuable records and first pressings |
| Acid-free paper, unlined | breathable, but can shed fibres and cause scratches | better replaced by lined inner sleeves |
| Soft PVC | often contains plasticisers that can outgas | not recommended – not in the Klangheimat range |
All sleeves at Klangheimat are free from plasticisers. You’ll find material, thickness and dimensions in each product description.
03 · Formats
Which sleeve for which format?
| Format | Matching sleeve | Tip |
| LP & maxi single (12") | outer and inner sleeve in 12" format | the standard choice for most albums |
| Gatefold & double albums | outer sleeve with extra width | doesn’t strain the cover and closes easily |
| Box sets | large-format protective sleeve to fit the box | check dimensions before buying |
| Picture discs | transparent inner sleeve | the artwork stays visible and protected |
| CD in jewel case | CD protective sleeve for jewel cases | keeps the case free from scratches |
| Digipak & card sleeve | made-to-fit CD protective sleeve | protects cardboard from edge wear |
| Mini-LP CD | special sleeve for mini-LP CDs | for the delicate cardboard replicas of the original covers |
04 · Storage
How to store your collection correctly
1
Only sleeve clean records. Dust left in the sleeve rubs across the grooves every time you pull the record out. Ideally, the record goes straight into a fresh inner sleeve after cleaning. Find out how to clean them under Record washing and in our guide to the record cleaning machine.
2
Replace inner sleeves. Replace unlined paper inner sleeves with anti-static, acid-free ones. Keep printed originals separately – they are part of the collector’s value.
3
Record behind the cover. Put the record in its inner sleeve behind the cover inside the outer sleeve. This way it doesn’t press against the cover – preventing ring wear and seam splits.
4
Store upright. Place records upright on the shelf and not too tightly packed. Records stored at an angle or stacked can warp over time.
5
Avoid light and heat. Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight – keeping cover and vinyl in top condition for decades.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about sleeves & protection
What is the difference between an inner and an outer sleeve?
The inner sleeve encloses the record itself and protects the grooves from dust, scratches and static. The outer sleeve is a transparent film slipped over the cover to protect it from scuffs, fingerprints, moisture and light. For the best protection, combine both.
Which inner sleeves are best for vinyl records?
For valuable records, anti-static, acid-free inner sleeves with a smooth plastic liner or lining are recommended. They glide gently over the record surface, shed no fibres and attract less dust than plain paper sleeves.
Why should I replace the original paper inner sleeves?
Unlined paper sleeves can shed fine fibres, build up static and scratch the surface when the record is pulled out. Replace them with high-quality inner sleeves – and keep printed originals separately in the cover, as they are part of the value of collector’s items.
Are PVC sleeves harmful to vinyl records?
Soft PVC often contains plasticisers that outgas over time and can attack both cover and record surface. So choose sleeves made from plasticiser-free materials such as polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP). At Klangheimat, we only stock plasticiser-free sleeves.
PE or PP – which outer sleeve is right for me?
PP sleeves are crystal-clear and slightly stiffer – ideal if you want the cover to shine. PE sleeves are softer, supple and slightly matt to clear; they feel pleasant and suit records you pull off the shelf every day. Both reliably protect against dust and scuffs.
Do outer sleeves also fit gatefold covers, double albums and box sets?
For thicker covers such as gatefolds, double or triple albums, there are outer sleeves with extra width. Box sets need their own, larger protective sleeves. Check the dimensions in the product description so the sleeve is neither too tight nor strains the cover.
Should the record go behind the cover in the outer sleeve?
Many collectors put the record in its inner sleeve behind the cover inside the outer sleeve. This way the record doesn’t press against the cover from inside – preventing ring wear and seam splits. You also don’t have to keep opening the cover to take the record out.
Do CDs need protective sleeves too?
Yes, especially collector’s editions. Protective sleeves keep jewel cases free from scratches and protect digipaks, card sleeves or cardboard mini-LP CDs from wear on edges and corners. This keeps the packaging in good condition for years.
