Headshells – precision & flexibility for analogue sound
Give your cartridge the stage it deserves.
A headshell may be small, but it plays a big part in the sound quality of a turntable. As the direct link between tonearm and cartridge, it ensures that the cartridge is positioned precisely and works with mechanical stability.
Material, weight, resonance behaviour and compatibility with your tonearm decide how well cartridge and arm work together.
What matters in a headshell
Precise positioning
Slots to the ½-inch standard allow exact adjustment of overhang and alignment.
The right weight
The mass of the headshell helps determine whether tonearm and cartridge are well matched.
Low-resonance material
Aluminium, magnesium or carbon – stiff, light and well damped.
Secure mount
SME bayonet with locking collar for a firm fit and quick changes.
01
What a headshell does
The headshell – also called the cartridge carrier – holds the cartridge at the end of the tonearm. In high-quality hi-fi set-ups every detail counts here: how firmly the cartridge sits, how precisely it can be aligned and how well the headshell controls resonances all have a direct effect on tracking.
Position
The cartridge is aligned via the slots so that the stylus tracks the groove with the lowest possible tracking error.
Stabilise
A stiff, low-resonance carrier keeps the cartridge steady, so that energy from the groove does not turn into unwanted vibrations.
Connect
Via four contacts and the headshell leads, the cartridge signal reaches the tonearm.
02
Material & weight
Precision-made headshells of aluminium, magnesium or carbon differ in stiffness, damping and weight – and therefore in their influence on the sound.
Aluminium
light · stiff · proven
The versatile classic: precisely machinable, dimensionally stable and a safe choice for most cartridges.
Magnesium
very light · well damped
Particularly light with good self-damping – popular for compliant MM cartridges and clear, calm reproduction.
Carbon
light · very stiff · low resonance
High stiffness at low weight and little tendency to resonate – often found in high-end headshells.
At least as important is the weight: it counts towards the effective mass of the tonearm. Compliant (high-compliance) MM cartridges usually work best with light headshells, stiffly suspended low-compliance MC cartridges often with heavier ones.
The resonance window
Tonearm, headshell and cartridge form a system capable of oscillating. Its resonance frequency should lie roughly between 8 and 12 Hz – below the audible range and above footfall and record warps.
Too low: footfall and record warps are amplified, and the tonearm may “pump”.
Too high: the resonance moves closer to the bass range and can colour it.

The right mount
Before material and looks, the headshell has to fit your tonearm. With us you will find a curated selection of leading brands – from the simple, functional model to the high-end headshell with a fine finish.
SME bayonetThe widespread standard
Four contact pins and a locking collar connect headshell and tonearm. Many turntables – for example those with an S-shaped tonearm – use this mount. On some models, azimuth can be fine-tuned by rotating the headshell in the bayonet.
FixedHeadshell as part of the tonearm
Many straight tonearms have a permanently attached headshell. No separate headshell is needed here – interchangeable headshells do not fit.
Manufacturer-specificProprietary mounts
Some manufacturers use their own mounts or cartridge carriers. Check the details of your tonearm before buying – we are happy to help.
04
Several cartridges, one turntable
Particularly interesting for ambitious listeners: with several headshells, one turntable can be used with different cartridges. You switch conveniently between sonic characters – without having to remount every time.
Headshell A · MC cartridge
analytical, detailed – for jazz and classical
Headshell B · MM cartridge
warm, powerful – for rock and older pressings
Mount each cartridge permanently
Each headshell carries one cartridge that is mounted permanently and carefully aligned once – overhang, alignment and, where possible, azimuth.
Check tracking force
Different cartridges and headshells weigh different amounts. Reset tracking force and anti-skating after every change.
Mind the arm height
If the cartridges differ in height, check the tonearm height (VTA) so that the arm is parallel to the record during playback.
Note it down and enjoy
Record the settings for each headshell – then a change takes just a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions about headshells
What is a headshell?
The headshell, also called the cartridge carrier, is the part at the end of the tonearm on which the cartridge is mounted. It positions the cartridge and passes its signal to the tonearm via four contacts.
Will any headshell fit my turntable?
No. Interchangeable headshells need a tonearm with a matching mount, usually the SME bayonet. Many straight tonearms have a fixed headshell – a separate headshell cannot be fitted there.
Which material is best?
There is no best material, only the right one. Aluminium is the versatile classic, magnesium particularly light and well damped, carbon very stiff and low in resonance.
How heavy should my headshell be?
That depends on tonearm and cartridge. The goal is a resonance frequency of about 8 to 12 Hz. Compliant MM cartridges usually suit light headshells, low-compliance MC cartridges often heavier ones.
Are headshells suitable for MM and MC cartridges?
Yes. What matters is that weight and compliance are well matched. We are happy to advise you on the right combination.
Can I use different cartridges with several headshells?
Yes, that is one of the big advantages of interchangeable headshells. Mount one cartridge permanently on each headshell and switch depending on the music or your mood.
Do I need to readjust after changing?
Yes. Check tracking force and anti-skating after every change, and the tonearm height if the cartridge height differs. Overhang and alignment are retained when the cartridge stays mounted.
What can headshells be combined with?
With high-quality headshell leads, a suitable cartridge and an alignment protractor. This lets you get the full potential out of your analogue chain.
