Audio interference suppression
Calm in the signal – for undisturbed music enjoyment
For many hi-fi fans it is a book with seven seals: suppressing interference in equipment, systems and rooms. We do not want to give you ready-made answers, but rather orientation – so that you can form your own picture of this complex topic.
Understand interference, free the sound
Mains, RF, earthing or room – once you know the source, you will find the right solution.
Audible interference often has simple causes that can be fixed in a targeted way.
Mains filters, earthing, shielded cables or room tuning – depending on the situation.
A many-layered topic where trying things out and listening for yourself count.
Where does interference come from?
A hi-fi system processes tiny signals – just a few millivolts at the cartridge, and only fractions of that with MC cartridges. It is correspondingly sensitive to interference from outside. The main sources:
Switch-mode power supplies, dimmers, LED lights and household appliances feed high-frequency interference into the mains, which reaches your system through the wall socket.
Wi-Fi, mobile networks and Bluetooth transmit constantly. Unshielded cables and sensitive inputs can pick up these signals.
If devices are earthed via several paths, ground loops can occur – typically heard as a low hum at 50 Hz.
Especially in the analogue world, static electricity on records and equipment causes crackle and attracts dust.
Typical symptoms
Not every disturbance is immediately recognisable as such. These signs suggest that interference suppression may be worthwhile:
- —Hum: A steady, low hum – often a sign of a ground loop or an earthing problem.
- —Noise & chirping: Noise in quiet passages or a typical chirping when a smartphone is near the system.
- —Clicks when switching: Audible clicks when lights, the fridge or other household appliances switch on or off.
- —Restless sound: Many listeners report a calmer background and more space after interference suppression – a subjective but frequently mentioned effect.
Approaches at a glance
Depending on the cause, there are different ways to a calmer system. It makes sense to start with the simple, easily traceable measures:
Filter high-frequency interference out of the mains and provide a clean power supply for your components.
Well-planned earthing and a star connection to a shared power strip help prevent ground loops.
Good shielding and ferrite cores keep RF interference away from sensitive signal paths.
Products which, according to their manufacturers, influence interference fields around equipment or in the room. Whether they make a difference for you is ultimately decided by your ears.
Simply check for yourself
Before you invest, a quick check is worthwhile. These steps help narrow down many kinds of interference:
- —Disconnect devices one by one: Unplug the connections and mains plugs of individual components one after another to find the source of the interference.
- —Keep smartphones away: Do not place mobile phones directly next to amplifiers, phono stages or cables.
- —Route cables separately: Avoid running mains and signal cables in parallel – if they have to cross, do so at right angles.
- —One shared power strip: Connect all components to the same power strip to avoid differing earth potentials.
- —Household culprits: Check whether the problem disappears when dimmers, LED power supplies or chargers are switched off.
A complex topic – your own picture
One thing is beyond dispute: today we live and listen in an environment full of radio and interference sources – from Wi-Fi and mobile networks to the power supplies in our own homes. How strongly they affect the sound in an individual case, however, is controversially debated in the hi-fi world.
We therefore do not want to give you ready-made explanations, but leave it to everyone to form their own picture. You will find a more in-depth introduction to the topic at das.raumtuning.info.

Frequently asked questions about audio interference suppression
What does interference suppression mean in hi-fi?
It covers measures that keep unwanted interference away from the system – such as high-frequency interference from the mains, RF interference, ground loops caused by earthing problems or static charge.
My system hums – what can I do?
A steady hum often points to a ground loop. Connect all devices to the same power strip and disconnect individual connections one after another to find the cause. With turntables, it is worth checking the ground wire to the phono stage.
What does a mains filter do?
A mains filter reduces high-frequency interference coming from other household devices via the mains. Your components thus receive a cleaner power supply.
Is a mains filter also suitable for power amplifiers?
For powerful amplifiers, look for filters or power strips designed for high currents. Unsuitable filters can limit current delivery. We will gladly advise you on the right solution.
Does my smartphone interfere with the system?
It can. A typical chirping or rattling during reception indicates RF interference. Keep your smartphone away from the amplifier, phono stage and cables.
Does interference suppression always make an audible difference?
Not always. How much improves depends on your system, the power supply and the surroundings. With audible interference such as hum, the effect is usually clear; with subtler sonic effects, your own ears decide.
How do I route cables to minimise interference?
Run mains and signal cables separately and not in parallel wherever possible. If they have to cross, do so at right angles. Keep signal cables as short as sensibly possible.
