Turntable mats – better sound through the right material
The layer between platter and record shapes what you hear.
A high-quality turntable mat provides a stable surface, reduces unwanted vibrations, improves decoupling and can reduce static.
Depending on the material, it also influences the sonic character – many listeners describe it as warmer, more detailed or more precise.
What a good mat does
Stable support
The record lies flat and does not slip – a calm basis for tracking.
Less vibration
The material damps resonances from platter, motor and record.
Better decoupling
An intermediate layer mechanically separates record and platter.
Less static
Cork and leather charge up far less than some other materials.
01
The materials and their character
At Klangheimat you will find a wide selection of turntable mats – from the classic felt mat through cork and leather to high-end multi-layer mats.
Felt
the classic
Supplied with many turntables: light, affordable and with a lively sound. When the record is lifted off, felt can encourage dust and static.
Cork
grip & openness
Combines good grip with an open sound and is perceived as neutral by many audiophiles. Cork hardly builds up any static.
Rubber
strongly damping
Heavy and well damped – often recommended for rather bright-sounding systems that can take a little more calm.
Leather
calm & refined
Valued for a particularly calm, smooth sound and anti-static properties – with a premium look.
Multi-layer & high-end
precisely tuned
Combinations of several materials or special compounds that balance damping, grip and decoupling in a targeted way.
Sonic tendency of the materials
This is how many listeners describe the character – as a guide, not a rule. The result always depends on turntable, cartridge and system.
02
The right choice for your turntable
Which turntable mat suits you depends on the turntable, the listening environment and your personal preferences.
Your turntable
Platters made of metal, acrylic or glass sound different and benefit from different amounts of damping. With light platters or weak motors, the mat should not be too heavy.
Your system
If your system sounds rather bright, damping materials such as rubber or leather often bring more calm. With a rather warm system, cork can add openness.
Your preferences
In the end your ears decide: compare with recordings you know well.
03
Thickness & arm height
The thickness of the mat also matters: it changes the height of the record and thus the angle at which the tonearm sits above the groove (VTA). Common mats are roughly 1 to 5 mm thick.
If the new mat differs significantly from the original, check and readjust the tonearm height – especially with sensitive cartridges. Many manufacturers state the thickness of their mats so that you can compare before buying.
✓ Tonearm parallel to the record
✕ Thicker mat: tonearm lower at the rear

Frequently asked questions about turntable mats
What is a turntable mat for?
It provides a stable, non-slip surface for the record, damps vibrations, decouples record and platter and can reduce static.
Which material sounds best?
That depends on turntable, system and taste. Rubber and leather are considered calm and damping, cork neutral and open, felt lively.
Does a mat help against static?
Cork and leather hardly charge up and can reduce static. Felt, on the other hand, can encourage charge and dust when the record is lifted off.
How thick should a turntable mat be?
Common mats are roughly 1 to 5 mm thick. What matters is the comparison with your original mat: if there is a clear difference, readjust the tonearm height.
Do I need to readjust after changing the mat?
Usually not if the thickness is similar. If the new mat is noticeably thicker or thinner, check the tonearm height so that the arm is parallel to the record during playback.
Will any mat fit my turntable?
Most mats fit standard platters for 12-inch records. Pay attention to diameter and weight – light platters or weak motors cannot handle very heavy mats.
Can I combine the mat with a record weight?
Yes. A record weight or clamp presses the record more firmly onto the mat and can improve coupling.
How do I care for my turntable mat?
Felt can be dusted with a brush, cork and rubber cleaned with a slightly damp cloth. Leather is best cared for dry and according to the manufacturer's instructions.
