Wireless Audio
Wireless sound with substance
Wireless audio has long been more than just practical – it is a fully fledged hi-fi solution. Thanks to modern transmission standards, many wireless systems today offer highly resolved, stable sound – with no cable clutter at all.
Freedom without loss of sound
Lossless streaming up to hi-res – wireless, but without compromise.
Fewer leads, more freedom in placement and interior design.
Play several rooms in sync or separately – controlled by app.
Make existing systems wireless with a streaming bridge or receiver.
Typical wireless technologies at a glance
Not all wireless is the same. Three transmission paths have become established – with different strengths in sound, range and convenience:
| Technology | Bluetooth | Wi-Fi / network | RF transmission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sound quality | Data-reduced, clearly better with aptX HD or LDAC | Lossless, up to hi-res depending on platform | Lossless depending on system, very low latency |
| Range | Usually within the same room | Throughout the home network | Within the room or between adjacent rooms |
| Connection | Directly from smartphone or tablet | Via router, controlled by app | Permanently paired transmitter and receiver |
| Ideal for | Spontaneous listening, guests, mobile devices | Streaming, music library, multi-room | Wireless speakers and subwoofers |
For the highest standards, network streaming is the first choice: the music comes straight from the internet or your own server to the device – the smartphone only serves as a remote control.
Protocols & platforms
For source, app and speakers to work together, they speak a common language. These are the standards you will meet most often:
The open standard for music from your home network – for example from a NAS server holding your own music library.
Apple’s protocol for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Lossless in CD quality and multi-room capable.
Software platform for demanding music libraries. ‘Roon Ready’ devices receive bit-perfect audio up to hi-res.
The operating system of the Bluesound and NAD family: hi-res streaming, multi-room and a clear, intuitive app.
The streaming service plays directly on the device, the smartphone only controls it – battery and sound both benefit.
Google’s streaming standard, built into many apps and speakers, and also multi-room capable.
Products in this category
From the complete wireless system to the small adapter that brings your existing system onto the network:
Active, elegant and great-sounding: amplifier, streaming and converter are already built in – just connect the power.
Make existing systems wireless. They receive music from the network and pass it on digitally or in analogue form to your amplifier.
For mobile integration: smartphone to your system, or TV to wireless headphones.
Enjoy music in several rooms in sync, or give each room its own programme – all in one app.
Tips for stable, high-quality sound
Wireless doesn’t mean undemanding. With a few simple steps you get the best out of your system:
- —Good Wi-Fi is the foundation: Stable coverage prevents dropouts. In larger homes, a mesh system ensures even reception in every room.
- —Cable where it makes sense: Stationary devices such as streamers or bridges benefit from an Ethernet cable – it relieves the Wi-Fi and increases stability.
- —Choose one ecosystem: For multi-room, all devices should support the same platform, such as BluOS, AirPlay 2 or Roon. That way they can be controlled in sync.
- —Position speakers correctly: Wireless speakers, too, sound best free-standing at ear height and with some distance from the wall.
- —Don’t forget updates: Firmware updates bring new features, services and more stability – many devices update automatically.

Frequently asked questions about wireless audio
Does wireless music sound worse than with cables?
Not necessarily. Via Wi-Fi or network, music reaches the device losslessly, depending on platform even in hi-res. Bluetooth, by contrast, usually transmits in data-reduced form. For high-quality listening, we therefore recommend network streaming.
Bluetooth or Wi-Fi – which is better?
Bluetooth is ideal for spontaneous listening straight from the smartphone and needs no network. Wi-Fi streaming offers higher sound quality, greater range and multi-room. Many devices master both.
What is a streaming bridge?
A streaming bridge is a network player that receives music from the internet or your own server and passes it on to your existing system – digitally to a DAC or amplifier, and in analogue form on models with a built-in converter.
Can I make my existing hi-fi system wireless?
Yes. With a streaming bridge or a Bluetooth receiver you can make almost any system streaming-capable without replacing amplifier or speakers. We will gladly advise you on the right solution.
What does multi-room mean?
Multi-room means listening to music in several rooms – the same everywhere in sync, or something different in each room. All devices need to support the same platform, such as BluOS, AirPlay 2 or Roon.
What does ‘Roon Ready’ mean?
Roon is a software platform for managing and playing music libraries and streaming services. Devices with the ‘Roon Ready’ seal can be controlled directly from Roon and receive music bit-perfectly, including in hi-res.
Do wireless speakers need a power connection?
Yes, as a rule. Wireless speakers are active speakers with built-in amplification and therefore need power. ‘Wireless’ refers to the music transmission. Portable battery speakers are the exception.
How important is my Wi-Fi for wireless audio?
Very important. A stable, well-developed Wi-Fi network prevents dropouts, especially with hi-res and multi-room. Where possible, also connect stationary devices with an Ethernet cable.
