From StudioPhono to MasterPhono – the complete MoFi Electronics family at Klangheimat

A cartridge's signal is tiny, delicate and bent along the RIAA curve – bass frequencies reduced, highs boosted. A proper phono preamplifier has to do two things in a single step: precisely reverse that equalisation and cleanly amplify the signal to line level. How quiet, dynamic and tonally truthful that step is has a decisive impact on how your record ultimately sounds. MoFi Electronics phono preamplifiers tackle that task with an unusual advantage – they come straight from the environment of one of the world's most demanding analogue mastering studios.
MoFi Electronics is the electronics division of Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab – the US label that has defined the reference standard for audiophile vinyl reissues for more than four decades. The brand's phono stages aren't generic catalogue products but the logical home-audio expression of a philosophy refined daily in the cutting room in Sebastopol, California. At Klangheimat we carry the complete current phono family: StudioPhono, UltraPhono, the new UltraPhono Pro, and the flagship MasterPhono – all fully MM/MC capable and handcrafted in the USA.
Four models, one shared sonic ideal: the cartridge signal should pass into the rest of the chain with as little intervention and as much quiet as possible. The range covers every relevant price class – from the first audiophile phono stage to the fully balanced reference.
The phono stages built into many integrated amplifiers are typically functional compromises: modestly dimensioned circuits, few or no setup options, and – most importantly – the misfortune of sitting inside the same chassis as strong noise sources such as transformers, power stages and switching supplies. An external phono preamplifier doesn't share that problem. It gets its own quiet enclosure, its own carefully dimensioned power supply, and can focus entirely on the delicate task of equalising and amplifying a millivolt-level signal.
In well-resolved systems the audible result is rarely subtle: the sound becomes quieter, more relaxed and spatially more three-dimensional; voices gain body; fine details like string attacks, breathing or room reverb are no longer buried in the noise floor. Equally important: an external phono preamp like a MoFi model can be tailored precisely to the cartridge in use – in gain, loading and (for MM) capacitance. This point is often underestimated, yet it is decisive for whether a cartridge actually delivers what it was built for.
The MoFi Electronics phono line is shaped by two of the most respected minds in modern audio design – each with a distinctive signature clearly audible in the products:
Newcomers and upgraders. Moving from an integrated amp's built-in phono stage to a dedicated external device, the StudioPhono is the natural starting point. The sonic leap is clearly audible, operation stays straightforward, and the flexible MC adjustment keeps the unit future-proof for later cartridge upgrades.
Headphone vinyl listeners. If records are regularly played through headphones – whether out of consideration for housemates or because the headphone chain is already part of the main system – the UltraPhono combines both roles in one unit with no compromise on phono performance.
Demanding vinyl listeners. For high-resolution systems that clearly demand more quiet and flexibility, the UltraPhono Pro has been the most interesting proposition in the MoFi lineup since early 2026: it brings a large share of the MasterPhono's sonic quality in a more compact chassis and at a significantly lower price, including balanced outputs and plenty of gain reserve for low-output MCs.
High-end systems and collectors. Anyone running multiple tonearms or cartridges, regularly switching systems, or seeking an uncompromising reference at the heart of the analogue chain will find in the MasterPhono one of the most versatile and sonically convincing devices in its class – with VU meters, remote control and stored setups per cartridge.

Are MoFi phono preamplifiers suitable for MC cartridges?
Yes, without exception. All current models – StudioPhono, UltraPhono, UltraPhono Pro and MasterPhono – are true MM/MC phono preamplifiers with extensive gain and loading options. The UltraPhono Pro offers up to 71 dB of gain and confidently drives even very quiet low-output MCs below 0.3 mV.
Do I need an external phono stage if my amplifier already has a phono input?
In most cases the upgrade pays off noticeably. Built-in phono stages are usually simply designed, offer few setup options and sit among strong noise sources. An external unit like the StudioPhono typically brings significantly more quiet, better dynamics and more accurate cartridge matching.
Which settings matter most on a phono preamplifier?
Three parameters shape the sound: gain (matched to the cartridge's output), load impedance (crucial for MC – treble balance, speed, spatial presentation), and input capacitance (primarily relevant for MM). On the UltraPhono Pro and MasterPhono these values can be adjusted comfortably on the front panel or even by remote.
Are MoFi Electronics products really made in the USA?
Yes. MoFi Electronics runs its own production facilities in the United States and deliberately avoids offshore contract manufacturing in order to maintain full control over component quality and final QC.
Can I audition a MoFi unit at Klangheimat?
Just get in touch. We'll help you choose the right model, advise on the optimal gain and loading for your cartridge, and support you in matching it to your turntable and tonearm.
