Hi-fi streamers
Wireless, convenient, great-sounding
A good audio streamer is more than a digital player: it brings your entire music library and your streaming services into your living room in high quality. For many, it is now the heart of the modern hi-fi system.
The heart of the modern hi-fi system
Streaming services, internet radio and your own library in one app.
Lossless and high-resolution formats – depending on service and model.
By app, touch display or remote control – just as you like.
With its own DAC or as a pure transport for your existing converter.
What is a hi-fi streamer?
A hi-fi streamer – also called a network player – fetches music from the internet or your home network and passes it on to your system. Unlike Bluetooth streaming from a smartphone, it receives the data itself. The smartphone only acts as a remote control, while the music plays directly and in full quality. This is how the streamer fits into the classic signal chain:
Streaming service, internet radio, NAS or USB storage
Receives the music data over the network and plays it
Converts the digital signal into an analogue one – internally or externally
Amplifies the analogue signal for the speakers
Make the music audible – in the living room or throughout the house
Features of a hi-fi streamer
Modern streamers combine many music sources in one device – the range of features depends on the model:
TIDAL, Qobuz, Spotify, internet radio and more – built in directly or via Connect features.
Playback of your own library from USB storage, a NAS or a network share.
LAN, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or AirPlay – flexibly integrated into your home, depending on the model.
Integration with platforms such as BluOS or Roon for convenient operation and multi-room.
Lossless formats such as FLAC, ALAC and WAV, depending on the model also hi-res and DSD.
Many streamers can be combined with other devices on the same platform to form a multi-room system.
Differences between audio streamers
The most important difference is whether the streamer has its own digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) or not:
| Feature | Streamer with DAC | Pure streaming transport |
|---|---|---|
| Outputs | Analogue (RCA, sometimes XLR), often digital as well | Digital only, e.g. USB, coaxial or optical |
| Connects to | Any amplifier with a line-level input | External DAC or amplifier with DAC input |
| Ideal for | Ready-to-use complete solution | Existing high-quality converters |
| Upgrading | Converter built in | DAC can be swapped at any time |
Operation differs too: some streamers have a touch display showing album art, others rely entirely on app control, and many also offer a classic remote control.
Tips for the best sound
With a few simple rules you get the most out of your streamer:
- —Prefer a network cable: Where possible, connect the streamer with a LAN cable. This ensures stable playback, especially with high-resolution files.
- —Choose the right platform: Make sure the streamer supports your favourite services and your preferred app, such as Roon, BluOS or TIDAL Connect.
- —Check the outputs: Do the outputs match your amplifier or DAC? Analogue, USB, coaxial or optical – a quick look saves adapters later.
- —Use the right service: For the best quality, services with lossless or high-resolution playback are worthwhile.
- —Install updates: Firmware updates bring new services, features and more stability.

Frequently asked questions about hi-fi streamers
What is the difference between a streamer and a DAC?
The streamer receives the music data from the network or your storage and plays it. The DAC converts the digital signal into an analogue one that your amplifier can process. Many streamers already have a DAC built in; pure streaming transports pass the signal digitally to an external DAC.
Do I need an external DAC?
Not necessarily. Streamers with a built-in DAC can be connected directly to any amplifier. An external DAC is worthwhile if you already own a high-quality converter or want to upgrade specifically later on.
Does a streamer sound better than Bluetooth from a smartphone?
As a rule, yes. The streamer fetches the music itself from the network and plays it losslessly, whereas Bluetooth usually transmits in data-reduced form. With a streamer, the smartphone only acts as a remote control.
Should I connect the streamer via Wi-Fi or LAN?
Both work. A LAN cable provides the most stable connection, especially with high-resolution files and large libraries. Wi-Fi is more convenient when there is no network socket nearby.
Which streaming services can I use?
That depends on the model. TIDAL, Qobuz, Spotify and internet radio are often built in, frequently also via Connect features directly from the respective app. You will find the exact list in the device description.
What does Roon Ready mean?
Roon is a software platform for managing and playing music libraries and streaming services. Streamers with the Roon Ready seal can be controlled directly from Roon and receive the music bit-perfectly.
Can I connect a streamer to my older amplifier?
Yes. A streamer with a built-in DAC is simply connected to a free line-level input, such as CD, tuner or aux. This makes even a classic amplifier streaming-ready.
Can I play my own music collection?
Yes. Most streamers play files from USB storage, a NAS or a network share. With platforms such as Roon or BluOS, local files and streaming services can be managed in one shared library.
