Record weights

More control for your vinyl sound

A suitable record weight is an effective accessory for refining the sound of a turntable. It presses the record firmly onto the platter, ensures calm, flat contact and can noticeably reduce resonances and the effects of slight warps.

At a glance

Firm contact, calm running

Contact
Better flatness

The record lies firmly and flat on the platter – even with slight warps.

Resonance
Less sympathetic vibration

Record and platter become one unit, self-resonances decrease.

Sound
Calmer sound

Many listeners report more calm and clarity, especially in quiet passages.

Design
Finely crafted

Made of stainless steel, aluminium or brass – often with damping or a spirit level.

01

Why use a record weight?

A record never lies completely flat on the platter. Small warps, a slightly domed label or a thin pressing mean that in places it rests only loosely – and can vibrate freely there. A record weight presses the record firmly onto the platter. This turns record and platter into one unit that drains resonances away together instead of feeding them back into the groove.

In addition, the weight slightly increases the rotating mass. Much like a flywheel, this can calm the platter’s running. A record weight shows its full effect especially with slightly warped or thinly pressed records.

02

Weight, clamp or periphery ring?

The term record weight covers various solutions that hold the record in place in different ways:

Type Principle Ideal for
Record weight (puck) Rests on the label with its own weight Easy handling, most turntables
Record clamp Screwed or clamped onto the spindle, pressing the label down Light turntables, little extra mass
Periphery ring Rests on the record’s edge and also presses down the outer grooves Heavily warped records, massive turntables

03

What does the extra weight bring?

Used correctly, a record weight acts in several places at once:

  • —Better flatness: The record lies more firmly – slight warps are smoothed out, and the tonearm has less to compensate.
  • —Calmer running: The extra mass can reduce speed fluctuations, especially with light platters.
  • —Fewer resonances: Record and platter no longer vibrate separately, mechanical self-resonances decrease.
  • —More stable stereo image: Many listeners describe a calmer, more clearly layered soundstage.
  • —More clarity in quiet passages: A quieter background lets fine details stand out more clearly.

04

What should you look out for?

What matters is the match with your turntable. Not every turntable is designed for extra mass – a weight that is too heavy can strain the bearing and motor and actually worsen speed stability. Here is what to look out for:

  • —Bearing load capacity: Belt-driven models with light bearings in particular often tolerate only a little extra weight. Follow the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • —Suspended sub-chassis turntables: On suspended turntables, extra weight changes the tuning of the suspension. Light clamps are often the better choice here.
  • —Matching spindle: Diameter and length of the platter spindle must suit the weight or clamp.
  • —Enough clearance: Make sure the tonearm and arm lift clear the weight when the stylus reaches the run-out groove.
  • —Place gently: Put the weight on carefully and remove it with the platter stopped to protect the bearing.

Materials & design

Our record weights are made of high-quality materials and combine technical function with fine design – to suit any hi-fi system:

Stainless steel

Heavy, dimensionally stable and durable – high mass in a small space.

Aluminium

Light and precisely made – ideal for turntables that tolerate only a little extra weight.

Brass

High density and a refined look – a classic in the high-end segment.

Damping & spirit level

Many models have decoupling inserts, damping elements or an integrated spirit level for levelling.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about record weights

What is the difference between a record weight and a record clamp?

A record weight rests on the label with its own weight. A clamp is screwed or clamped onto the spindle and presses the record down without adding much weight. Clamps are therefore often the better choice for light or suspended turntables.

Can my turntable take a record weight?

That depends on the bearing and the design. Massive turntables with sturdy bearings usually tolerate heavier weights, light and suspended models often only a little. Check the manufacturer’s specifications or ask us – we are happy to help.

How heavy should a record weight be?

There is no standard. Typical weights range from a few hundred grams to around one kilogram. What matters is what your turntable can take – if in doubt, a lighter weight or a clamp is the safe choice.

Does a record weight help with warped records?

With slight warps, yes: the record is pressed more firmly onto the platter. With more heavily warped records, a periphery ring that also presses down the edge works much better.

Can I use a record weight on a suspended sub-chassis turntable?

Only with care. Extra weight changes the tuning of the suspension. Choose a light weight or a clamp and check after fitting whether the sub-chassis still floats freely.

What is the integrated spirit level for?

The spirit level shows whether the platter is level. This lets you check your turntable quickly every time you play a record and readjust if necessary.

Can I combine a record weight with a platter mat?

Yes, the two complement each other well. The mat determines the contact between record and platter, the weight provides firm pressure. With thicker mats, mind the tonearm height.

Is a record weight also suitable for direct-drive turntables?

Yes, many direct-drive turntables handle a weight well. Still check the manufacturer’s specifications and whether the turntable keeps a stable speed with the extra weight.
