Record cleaning machines
The key to sonic perfection
Discover the world of record care: a thoroughly cleaned record sounds calmer, more dynamic and more detailed. For many vinyl lovers, washing their records has therefore become an essential part of listening – and the right record cleaning machine is the most important tool for it.
Clean grooves, better sound
Less crackle and noise, more calm, dynamics and fine detail.
Clean grooves wear less – records and stylus last longer.
Manual systems, vacuum cleaning or ultrasonic – for every standard.
From compact units for occasional cleaning to professional solutions.
The cleaning methods compared
Dust, fingerprints, pressing residues and deposits settle deep in the groove. The market offers a wide range of record cleaning machines and systems, which fall into three basic categories:
| Feature | Manual | Vacuum cleaning | Ultrasonic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Principle | Washing bath or cleaner with brushes, record turned by hand | Apply fluid, brush it in, vacuum off dirt and fluid together | Cavitation in a water bath loosens dirt deep in the groove |
| Drying | Drip off and air-dry | Directly by the vacuum | Fan, drip-drying or additional vacuum |
| Cleaning depth | Good | Very good | Very good, even on the groove walls |
| Operation | Simple, some manual work | Convenient, semi-automatic depending on model | Very convenient, often several records at once |
| Ideal for | Getting started and occasional cleaning | Growing collections, regular care | Demanding collectors, large quantities |

Vacuum cleaning in detail
Vacuum record cleaning machines are the classic of record care: the cleaning fluid loosens the dirt, and the vacuum removes it together with the fluid completely from the groove. Nothing dries in, nothing is left behind. Within this group, machines differ in operation and type of suction:
Fluid application and suction are started by hand, and the record is often turned manually too. Robust, affordable and very effective.
A motor turns the record; application and suction run at the push of a button or by programme. Consistent results with little effort.
A wide suction arm with velvet-covered lips covers the entire grooved area. Fast and efficient – ideal for many records.
A fine nozzle travels across the record like a tonearm and vacuums the groove bit by bit, often via a thin thread. Particularly thorough with minimal contact.
Ultrasonic cleaning
Ultrasonic record cleaning machines work in a water bath. High-frequency sound waves create microscopic bubbles that implode – an effect called cavitation. The resulting tiny pressure pulses loosen dirt even from the finest groove modulations, without any brush contact.
Many machines operate at around 40 kHz, some at higher frequencies for particularly fine cavitation. Depending on the model, several records are cleaned at once and then dried by fan. The bath consists of distilled or demineralised water, with a special cleaning additive depending on the manufacturer.
A tip for the highest standards: combining an ultrasonic bath with subsequent vacuum drying unites the deep cleaning of cavitation with residue-free drying.
Benefits & tips for the perfect clean
For true music lovers, sound comes first. Record cleaning machines are an excellent way to maximise the sound quality of your vinyl treasures:
- —Better sound: Thoroughly cleaned grooves let the stylus work undisturbed. Crackle and noise decrease, while dynamics and fine detail come to the fore.
- —Longer life: Well-kept records wear less and keep their value longer. Your stylus benefits too – it no longer has to push dirt through the groove.
- —Dry-clean first: Remove loose dust with a carbon fibre brush before washing so it doesn’t end up in the fluid.
- —The right fluid: Use the cleaning fluid recommended by the manufacturer and distilled water. Tap water leaves limescale, and household cleaners can damage the vinyl.
- —Fresh sleeve: A clean record belongs in a new, anti-static inner sleeve – otherwise it picks up the dust from the old sleeve straight away.

Frequently asked questions about record cleaning machines
How often should I wash my records?
Always wash second-hand records before playing them for the first time, and ideally new records too. After that, a wash as needed is enough, for example when the record starts to crackle again. For everyday use, dry-cleaning the record with a carbon fibre brush before each play is sufficient.
Do new records need washing too?
It’s worth it. New pressings can carry residues from the pressing plant as well as paper fibres or dust from the inner sleeve. A first wash ensures a calmer sound and protects the stylus from the start.
Vacuum or ultrasonic – which is better?
Both methods clean very thoroughly. Vacuum machines dry the record directly by suction and have proven themselves for decades. Ultrasonic machines loosen dirt deep into the groove walls without brush contact and often clean several records at once. For the highest standards, the two can be combined.
Which cleaning fluid should I use?
Ideally the fluid recommended by your machine’s manufacturer, mixed with distilled water. Tap water leaves limescale deposits, and aggressive household cleaners can attack the vinyl.
Will the label be damaged during washing?
On vacuum machines, a label cover or clamp usually protects the label. On ultrasonic machines, depending on design, the record is immersed only up to just short of the label, or the label is sealed. Please follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Can I wash shellac records too?
With care. Shellac is sensitive to alcohol, so many cleaning fluids are unsuitable. Use only alcohol-free products expressly approved for shellac and, if in doubt, ask us first.
How long does a record wash take?
That depends on the method. With a vacuum machine, one side usually takes just a few minutes. Ultrasonic machines need a few minutes in the bath plus drying time, but often clean several records at once.
