Point-suction record cleaning machines
Precise care for fine grooves
The point-suction record cleaning machine is a specialised variant of record cleaning. Instead of vacuuming the whole record surface at once, it uses a fine nozzle to target exactly where dirt collects: deep in the groove. Audiophile collectors value this technique for its gentle yet highly effective cleaning.
Thorough down to the finest groove
A fine nozzle vacuums the groove bit by bit – right where the dirt sits.
Only a little fluid is needed, and hardly any ends up beside the playing track.
No wide suction arm across the whole surface – ideal for delicate records.
Quality over quantity: thoroughness you can hear in the end result.
How does point suction work on records?
With point suction, the cleaning fluid is applied to the record and then removed again through a fine suction opening. This nozzle sits on a pivoting arm and moves – much like a cartridge – slowly from the outer edge towards the centre of the record. The groove is vacuumed revolution by revolution, while hardly any fluid remains outside the suction point.
Spread cleaning fluid evenly on the rotating record
Gently work the fluid into the grooves with a brush
The suction nozzle is set down at the outer edge, like a tonearm
The nozzle slowly travels inwards and vacuums the groove bit by bit
Clean the second side in the same way, then into a new inner sleeve
On many machines, a thin thread runs between nozzle and record. It keeps a minimal distance from the groove surface, prevents direct contact between nozzle and vinyl, and is renewed regularly.
Point suction or full-width suction?
Both methods belong to the family of vacuum record cleaning machines. The difference lies in how the fluid is removed from the record:
| Feature | Point suction | Full-width suction |
|---|---|---|
| Suction | Fine nozzle, groove by groove | Wide suction arm across the entire grooved area |
| Contact with the record | Very low, often via a thread | Velvet lips rest on the record |
| Fluid | Very economical | Somewhat higher consumption |
| Time per side | Longer – thoroughness takes time | Short, ideal for many records |
| Maintenance | Renew the thread regularly | Keep velvet lips clean and replace them |
| Ideal for | Valuable, rare, delicate pressings | Large collections, regular cleaning |

Benefits of a point-suction record cleaning machine
Point suction combines the highest thoroughness with particularly gentle handling of your records:
- —Very precise cleaning: The nozzle works its way precisely through the groove and captures even the finest particles.
- —Minimal fluid consumption: Only as much fluid is needed as the cleaning really requires.
- —Minimal contact: Instead of a wide suction arm over the whole surface, only a fine nozzle travels across the record – often without direct contact with the vinyl.
- —Calm, even operation: The record turns evenly while the nozzle slowly moves inwards – controlled and reproducible.
- —Ideal for rare pressings: Valuable first pressings, audiophile editions and delicate records are treated especially gently.

Innovative technology for true sound lovers
Point suction of records is a prime example of the further development of audiophile cleaning technology. Instead of working on as much surface as possible at once, it puts quality before quantity – and achieves an audibly better result overall.
The principle is by no means new: it goes back to early British professional machines that were used in broadcasting and sound archives, among other places. Today several manufacturers offer such machines, some also accessories for upgrading existing machines. We will gladly advise you on which solution suits your collection.

Frequently asked questions about point-suction record cleaning machines
What is a point-suction record cleaning machine?
A vacuum record cleaning machine that does not remove the cleaning fluid with a wide suction arm across the whole surface, but groove by groove with a fine nozzle. The nozzle sits on a pivoting arm and slowly moves from the edge to the centre of the record.
What is the difference from full-width suction?
Full-width machines vacuum the entire grooved area in a few revolutions with a wide, velvet-covered arm and are therefore fast. Point-suction machines work more slowly but especially thoroughly and with minimal contact. They are particularly suited to valuable or delicate records.
What is the thread on the suction nozzle for?
On many point-suction machines, a thin thread runs between nozzle and record. It keeps a minimal distance, prevents direct contact between nozzle and vinyl and ensures even suction. The thread is a wear part and should be renewed regularly.
How long does cleaning one record side take?
Longer than with full-width machines, as the nozzle travels across the record groove by groove. Depending on the machine, allow a few minutes per side – in return, the result is especially thorough.
Which cleaning fluid is suitable?
Use the fluid recommended by the manufacturer or a high-quality cleaning solution for vacuum record cleaners, mixed with distilled water. Household cleaners and tap water are unsuitable.
Is point suction gentler on my records?
It is considered especially gentle because no wide suction arms rest on the entire surface and the nozzle often works without direct contact. This is an advantage especially for first pressings and audiophile editions.
Is a point-suction machine worthwhile for beginners too?
For getting started and for large quantities, manual systems or full-width machines are usually more practical. A point-suction machine pays off above all if you own valuable records and want the utmost thoroughness. We will gladly advise you on the right solution.
Can I upgrade my existing machine to point suction?
With some models, yes – some manufacturers offer suitable accessories. Whether this is possible for your device depends on the model. Get in touch and we will gladly check for you.
