Manual record cleaning machines
Effective care for your vinyl collection
For many vinyl lovers it is an indispensable tool: the record cleaning machine. Especially in its manual form, it offers an affordable yet effective way to free records from dust, dirt and deposits. The result: an audibly calmer sound and significantly less wear on stylus and groove.
Thoroughly clean – without any power
The affordable way into wet record cleaning – without compromising on effectiveness.
Less crackle and noise, more calm and fine detail.
Robust, low-maintenance and usable anywhere – without any power.
Clean grooves noticeably reduce wear.
How does a manual record cleaning machine work?
Unlike automated models, manual devices rely on the interplay of hand operation, cleaning fluid and mechanical brush contact. The record is placed in a bath of cleaning fluid and turned through integrated brushes. This reliably loosens even deeply embedded particles from the groove.
Pour cleaning fluid into the bath
Fit the record into the label clamp – the label stays dry
Turn the record through the brushes several times in both directions
Leave to dry upright and dust-free in the drying rack
Put the clean record into a new, anti-static inner sleeve
The classic: the Knosti record cleaning machine
When it comes to manual record cleaners, one name comes up particularly often: Knosti. The Knosti record cleaning machine has been a proven standard for decades – easy to use, reliable in its results and at a surprisingly affordable price.
Well-thought-out details make it a true all-rounder for regular record care:
- —Label clamp: The record is clamped between two sealing discs, so the label stays protected during washing.
- —Fine cleaning brushes: The brushes in the bath clean both sides of the record at once and reach deep into the groove.
- —Drying rack: After washing, the records dry upright in the rack – clean, space-saving and protected from dust.
- —Reusable fluid: The cleaning fluid can be used for several washes and should be filtered or renewed regularly.
Manual, vacuum or ultrasonic?
Manual machines are the entry into wet cleaning. Depending on your collection and standards, another method may pay off later:
| Feature | Manual | Vacuum cleaning | Ultrasonic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Principle | Bath with brushes, record turned by hand | Apply fluid, brush in, vacuum off | Cavitation in a water bath |
| Drying | Drip off and air-dry | Directly by the vacuum | Fan, drip-drying or vacuum |
| Power | Not required | Required | Required |
| Ideal for | Getting started, occasional cleaning | Growing collections | Demanding collectors |

Frequently asked questions about manual record cleaning machines
How does a manual record cleaning machine work?
The record is fitted into a label clamp, placed in a bath of cleaning fluid and turned by hand through integrated brushes. The brushes clean both sides at once. The record then dries upright in a rack.
Does the label get wet during washing?
No, not when used correctly. The label clamp seals the label on both sides. Make sure to clamp the record centrally and close the clamp firmly.
How often does the cleaning fluid need changing?
That depends on how dirty the records are. The fluid can be used for several washes. Filter it regularly and replace it as soon as it becomes cloudy or contains visible particles.
Can I use water instead of cleaning fluid?
We advise against it. Tap water leaves limescale in the groove, and plain water hardly dissolves grease and fingerprints. Use the manufacturer’s matching cleaning fluid.
How long does the record need to dry?
Usually anything from a few minutes to half an hour, depending on room temperature and humidity. Let the record dry upright in a low-dust environment and only put it into a new inner sleeve when completely dry.
Which formats is a manual cleaning machine suitable for?
Most models clean 30 cm LPs and 17 cm singles. Whether other formats such as 25 cm records are possible is stated in the description of the respective device.
Manual or vacuum – which is better for me?
For getting started and occasional cleaning, a manual machine is ideal: affordable, robust and effective. If you regularly clean many records or want to vacuum off the fluid completely, a vacuum machine is the better choice.
Can I wash shellac records in a manual machine?
Only with care. Shellac is sensitive to alcohol, which many cleaning fluids contain. Use only products expressly approved for shellac and, if in doubt, ask us first.
