How do I know if my tonearm lift needs new oil?

Why is a viscosity of 1000 cSt right for tonearm lifts?

Viscosity describes a fluid's resistance to flow — the higher the value, the thicker the oil. Tonearm lift mechanisms require a medium viscosity: low enough that the arm descends without stalling, high enough to noticeably slow the movement. 1000 cSt is a well-established value for this purpose. Some vintage designs — particularly friction disc systems in certain Dual or Thorens models — specify considerably higher viscosities (e.g. 300,000–500,000 cSt). With too much oil, the damping becomes excessive — the tonearm will descend extremely slowly or stall at an intermediate position without reaching the record surface.
