  • Precision-formulated silicone oil with a viscosity of 1000 cSt — specially developed for the smooth, controlled lowering motion of the turntable tonearm lift
  • Corrects both excessively fast descent and stuck or jammed lift mechanisms — protects the stylus, cartridge, and record
  • Includes a syringe with a cannula tip for precise, targeted application — even in hard-to-reach lift chambers and tight mechanisms
  • Compatible with all common tonearm lift systems—from classic models to modern direct-drive turntables
  • Fully synthetic silicone oil — resistant to aging, does not resinify, compatible with plastic and metal mechanisms
  • From the German analog accessory specialist Analogis — 2 ml capacity, sufficient for multiple maintenance procedures

How do I know if my tonearm lift needs new oil?

The most obvious sign is a change in the lift's descent speed: if the tonearm drops noticeably faster than usual, or falls uncontrolled onto the record, the damping oil has most likely dried out or been depleted. The opposite symptom — a lift that moves extremely slowly or feels sticky and barely moves at all — points to oil that has gummed up or resinified over time. On older turntables that have not been serviced for years, a preventive oil check is advisable before any damage to the stylus or cartridge occurs.

Why is a viscosity of 1000 cSt right for tonearm lifts?

Viscosity describes a fluid's resistance to flow — the higher the value, the thicker the oil. Tonearm lift mechanisms require a medium viscosity: low enough that the arm descends without stalling, high enough to noticeably slow the movement. 1000 cSt is a well-established value for this purpose. Some vintage designs — particularly friction disc systems in certain Dual or Thorens models — specify considerably higher viscosities (e.g. 300,000–500,000 cSt). Analogis Slow Down is designed for the standard piston-and-cylinder or pivot damping systems found in most modern and many older turntables. If in doubt, consult the service manual of your specific model.

How do I apply the oil correctly?

Where possible, the tonearm lift mechanism should be partially disassembled or at least opened enough to access the damping chamber or piston area — the exact procedure varies by model and is described in the relevant service manual. Old, gummed-up oil should be removed carefully before refilling, for example with a cotton swab or isopropyl alcohol. The Slow Down oil is then applied in small amounts (a few drops) using the included needle syringe, directed precisely into the chamber. After reassembly, operate the lift several times to distribute the oil evenly throughout the damping area.

How much oil should I use, and will 2 ml last for multiple services?

Less is more: refilling a tonearm lift damper typically requires only a few microlitres to a few drops of oil. Too much oil results in excessive damping — the arm will descend very slowly or not reach the record at all. With the 2 ml supplied, multiple service jobs are easily achievable — careful dosing will yield four to eight treatment cycles depending on the size of the mechanism. The oil remains usable after each withdrawal, provided the needle is capped cleanly between uses.

Which turntable brands and models is Slow Down compatible with?

Analogis Slow Down is suitable for all common tonearm lift systems regardless of manufacturer. It is most frequently used with turntables by Dual, Thorens, Pro-Ject, Rega, Technics, Pioneer, Yamaha and Sony — both vintage models from the 1970s and 1980s and modern designs. One important note: certain vintage turntables with friction disc damping (for example specific Dual models) require significantly higher viscosities as specified by the manufacturer. Always check the service manual of your specific model if you are unsure.

Why shouldn't I use ordinary oil or sewing machine oil instead?

Mineral oils, vegetable oils and general-purpose lubricants are unsuitable for tonearm lift mechanisms because they resinify, thicken or dry out over time — recreating exactly the problem being repaired. Silicone oil, by contrast, is chemically inert, does not age, and remains viscosity-stable over many years. It does not attack plastics, rubber seals or lacquered surfaces, and leaves no sticky residue. For a lasting, risk-free solution, a specifically formulated silicone oil such as Analogis Slow Down is the only sensible choice.

What happens if I add too much oil to the lift chamber?

With too much oil, the damping becomes excessive — the tonearm will descend extremely slowly or stall at an intermediate position without reaching the record surface. In this case, excess oil can be carefully removed using a clean cotton swab or cloth. The oil is not hazardous and causes no permanent damage to the mechanism, as long as no organic solvents are used for cleaning. Readjusting the amount of oil is straightforward and can be done at any time.

Turntable Accessories · Care & Maintenance

The tonearm lift is one of the most overlooked yet most critical mechanisms on any turntable — and one of the first to fail with age. A lift that descends too quickly risks stylus and cartridge damage with every play; one that sticks makes the entire listening experience a frustration. The culprit is almost always the same: the damping oil inside the lift mechanism has dried out, gummed up or simply been depleted over the years. Analogis Slow Down is the direct, technically sound response to this problem — a fully synthetic silicone oil with a precisely chosen viscosity of 1000 cSt, restoring the lift's smooth, controlled descent.

Analogis is a long-established German accessory specialist focused exclusively on the care and maintenance of analogue playback equipment. Slow Down is not a generic lubricant — it has been specifically formulated for tonearm lift damping chambers: temperature-stable, age-resistant, and fully compatible with the plastics and metals found in lift cylinders and damping housings. The included syringe with needle allows precise, controlled delivery into confined lift chambers that would be impossible to reach with a dropper or brush.

1000 cSt Viscosity
Precisely calibrated flow resistance for smooth, even damping — no sticking, no blocking
Needle Syringe
Targeted dosing even in hard-to-access lift systems — 2 ml sufficient for multiple treatments
Universal Fit
Suitable for all common tonearm lift types — vintage turntables through to current models
Technology & Function

Most tonearm lifts operate on the same fundamental principle: a piston or pivot pin moves through a chamber filled with viscous oil — the oil's internal friction (viscosity) slows the arm's descent, producing the characteristic slow, gliding motion. When the oil is absent or degraded, this resistance disappears. The arm drops abruptly onto the record, placing sudden stress on the stylus, cantilever and groove. The opposite problem — oil that is too thick or has congealed — can cause the lift to move barely at all.

The 1000 cSt viscosity of Analogis Slow Down is matched to the damping requirements of typical tonearm lift mechanisms: fluid enough to avoid blocking, viscous enough to deliver a clearly slowed, controlled descent. Silicone oil offers fundamental advantages in this application over mineral or organic oils — it does not gum up or resinify, its viscosity is largely unaffected by temperature across normal room conditions, and it is chemically inert to the rubber seals and plastic components common in lift assemblies.

Application & Compatibility

Slow Down is suitable for all common tonearm lift designs — friction disc dampers, piston systems and rotating element mechanisms as found in turntables by Dual, Thorens, Pro-Ject, Rega, Technics and many others. It is particularly valuable for vintage decks where the factory-fitted oil has long since dried out and original service materials are no longer available.

Application is straightforward: the included needle syringe delivers the oil precisely into the lift chamber — even where a dropper or brush cannot reach. Only a very small amount is needed per treatment; the 2 ml supplied is typically sufficient for several maintenance cycles. After application, operate the lift several times to distribute the oil evenly throughout the damping area.
