Why does vinyl sound different from a CD — and why do many listeners prefer records?

Vinyl is a fully analogue medium: the music is stored as a physical groove — a direct mechanical representation of the sound wave pattern, which the stylus traces and converts into an electrical signal. No analogue-to-digital converter, no quantisation noise, no sampling rate. The signal remains in the analogue domain throughout. This produces a sonic signature that many listeners describe as warmer, more organic and more musically direct — even if the CD is technically superior. The quiet noise, the natural distortions of the cartridge and the physical interaction of stylus and groove together create a character that many describe as "alive". Add to that the ritual: placing the record, cleaning it before playback, turning it over — vinyl is a conscious listening experience.

What are audiophile pressings — and what justifies the higher prices?

Audiophile pressings differ in three key respects. First, the mastering: an independent, vinyl-optimised master — ideally directly from the original analogue tape — by experienced engineers such as Kevin Gray, Bernie Grundman or Steve Hoffman. Second, the material: 180g or 200g virgin vinyl (pure PVC with no recycled content) produces measurably lower inherent noise. Third, the pressing quality: renowned plants such as Quality Record Pressings (QRP, USA), Pallas (Germany) or RTI (USA) work with the tightest tolerances in small runs. The result is a record that brings the original master tape significantly closer to the ear — cleaner, more dynamic and more spacious than an inexpensive commercial pressing.

What is half-speed mastering — and what sonic difference does it make?

In half-speed mastering, the cutting machine and master tape both run at half speed simultaneously. The decisive advantage: the cutting head has twice the time to follow the high-frequency audio signal mechanically. High-frequency content — cymbals, strings, breath, room reverberation — is transferred to the groove with significantly greater precision. The result is a record with extended high-frequency resolution, less distortion in the upper frequency range and a lower noise floor. At playback the record runs at normal speed — the half speed affects only the cutting process.

Why should records be washed — even if they appear new and clean?

Every record — even a brand-new one — carries invisible residues on its surface: chemical release agents from the pressing process and fine dust particles deposited during unpacking. These particles collect in the groove and are literally pressed deeper into the groove profile by the stylus during playback — causing increased crackling and accelerated stylus wear. Added to this: vinyl's static charge actively attracts dust from the air. A thorough wet cleaning removes all these residues right down to the groove base. The result is a measurably quieter groove, less distortion and a cleaner signal. At the same time, cleaning protects the stylus from abrasive particles that otherwise abrade the delicate stylus profile. In short: washing records extends the life of both record and stylus and audibly improves the sound.

How do we wash your records at Klangheimat — and what does the Clearaudio Double Matrix Professional Sonic achieve?

Klangheimat offers a professional record-washing service using the Clearaudio Double Matrix Professional Sonic — the reference device among record-washing machines, manufactured in Erlangen. The machine cleans both sides of a record simultaneously in a single wash cycle. The fully automatic process includes: application of cleaning fluid via pump to both sides, multiple passes with microvelvet wipers at alternating rotation directions, and final suction to dryness — all in around two minutes. Why should inner sleeves be replaced — and which sleeves are the right choice?

The paper sleeve in which most records are delivered is one of the most common and least noticed enemies of vinyl sound. Raw paper contains abrasive particles that scrape microscopic scratches into the groove surface when the record is inserted and removed — so-called hairline marks that manifest as characteristic noise. Switching to a high-quality antistatic inner sleeve made from HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) breaks this cycle: the smooth, soft inner surface glides almost frictionlessly over the vinyl, releases no particles and builds up no static charge that attracts dust. For an existing collection, replacing inner sleeves is one of the most cost-effective and impactful measures available — and should ideally take place after washing, so that a freshly cleaned record is not immediately returned to a dusty paper sleeve.

What is record flattening — and when does it make sense?

Records warp through improper storage, thermal stress or errors during the pressing process. A warped record constantly changes the precisely set cartridge parameters — tracking force, VTA, azimuth, anti-skating — depending on where on the record the stylus is located. The result: an unstable, distortion-prone playback. Record flattening heats the disc in a controlled manner to approx. 55–60°C — well below PVC's glass transition temperature (79°C) — and allows it to cool back to flat under even pressure. The groove remains completely unchanged. Beyond this, Dr. Ulrich Kathe, developer of the AFi record flattener, discovered that the controlled tempering also positively influences the molecular structure of the vinyl itself. During the pressing process, the record cools unevenly — the outer rim solidifies faster than the centre — leaving internal stresses in the material. Thermal tempering deliberately releases these stresses, resulting in measurably and audibly improved playback: more spaciousness, clearer instrument separation and an overall more relaxed sound — even for records that are not warped.

How do we flatten your records at Klangheimat — and what does the AFi record flattener achieve?

Klangheimat offers a professional record-flattening service using the AFi record flattener by Audio Fidelity Improvement — the world's first device that not only flattens warped records but also masters the sound-improving tempering of vinyl records. The device uses a patented heat-foil technology that ensures an extremely even temperature distribution across both sides of the record with a precision of ±0.25°C. The maximum temperature in the standard programme is 59°C — always kept well below PVC's glass transition temperature. The record lies between special flat-mats that ensure even pressure without hard contact points. The result: warped records are reliably flattened, and all records — even non-warped ones — benefit from the tempering process through audibly more natural playback. Important: records should always be washed before flattening — so that no contamination is permanently baked into the groove by the heat process.

Does 180g or 200g vinyl really sound better — yes or no?

The honest answer: it depends — and the devil is in the detail. Heavier vinyl is not automatically better-sounding vinyl. There are, however, concrete advantages and equally clear limitations.

Advantages of 180g / 200g:

Greater mass means greater rotational inertia on the platter — the record couples mechanically more stably, external vibrations (footfall, motor noise) are better damped. Heavier vinyl is also dimensionally more stable: it warps and buckles less readily under heat and pressure than thin standard vinyl. Additionally, more material during pressing allows a deeper, more even groove geometry with more precise pressure distribution. When the record is pressed from high-quality virgin vinyl (pure PVC without recycled content) — which is more common with 180g/200g pressings — the inherent noise of the material is measurably lower. On a high-quality system, this manifests as a blacker background and a clearer, quieter sound.

Disadvantages and limitations:

Weight alone says nothing about sound quality. A poorly mastered 180g pressing will sound worse than a carefully mastered 140g original pressing from the 1970s — guaranteed. By far the greatest influence on the sound of a record is the mastering, followed by the pressing plant and the vinyl compound used. A further critical point: thick vinyl is less forgiving of irregularities in the pressing process — and quality control at mass-market 180g pressings is often no better than for 140g product. This has led to many affordable "180g reissues" from large factories proving sonically disappointing despite their weight. The sonic superiority of 180g/200g reliably unfolds only when mastering, pressing plant and material are all at the highest level simultaneously — as is the case at specialists such as Quality Record Pressings (QRP), Pallas or RTI. Conclusion: 180g/200g is a necessary but not sufficient characteristic of audiophile quality.

Which audiophile labels are the first choice for vinyl collectors?

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) is the pioneer: original master tapes, half-speed mastering and exclusive One-Step pressings set the benchmark. Analogue Productions (Chad Kassem) presses at its own plant Quality Record Pressings (QRP) and is the absolute reference for jazz and blues. Music Matters Jazz is the first choice for Blue Note classics at 45 rpm. Speakers Corner Records from Germany offers a broad classical and jazz programme in high quality. Impex Records and Intervention Records complete the top segment. For classical music, ECM Records and Stockfisch are particularly recommendable. How should vinyl be stored correctly?

The absolute rule: records always stand upright, never lying flat. Lying records warp under the weight of stacked discs — a process that can begin within weeks depending on temperature and load. The optimal storage temperature is 15–20°C, humidity 45–55%. Direct sunlight and heat sources (radiators, amplifiers) are the most dangerous enemies — PVC begins to soften and permanently deforms from around 40°C. The record should always be in its inner sleeve before being slid into the outer sleeve or cover — never store directly in the cover without an inner sleeve, as paper contains abrasive particles and draws moisture. Outer protective sleeves (polyethylene or PP) protect the cover and reduce static charge from outside. And after playing: return the record to its sleeve immediately — every minute left open on the platter is a minute in which dust from the air settles on the groove surface.

The Cardas Frequency Sweep and Burn-in Record is a unique tuning tool for set-up, diagnosis and maintenance of your turntable. It was produced by George Cardas and mastered by mastering legend Stan Ricker on a Neumann VMS-66 lacquer cutting machine with a helium-cooled Neuman SX-74 cutting head. Keith O. Johnson contributed the electronics for the cutting head. In addition to the standard tones, the 'sweeper' includes relative and absolute polarity testing and frequency cleaners that use ultrasonic waves to clean the record needle and demagnetize the system. An endless running groove with 1/f noise, blank plateaus and a specially printed label that allows you to check the speed of the system are also included. And it's all on a 180g vinyl pressing with a smiling Stan Ricker on the cover.

The LP's most important tools are found on its first side: tracks 1 and 2, which demagnetize your system. Play these two tracks at normal volume and they will demagnetize your cartridge while ultrasonically cleaning the needle. After that, you may hear clicking noises when playing records. These are caused by dirt falling off the needle carrier after the cleaning process. In this case, simply clean the LP to remove it. You should perform this process regularly to maintain optimal playback quality. We advise weekly use and the effect should be clearly audible. Systems with iron cores need the application more often than those with ruby cores.

The 'sweeps' are at the same time helpful for the tonal tuning of your listening room and for checking the tuning measures already taken. To do this, simply sit in your listening position and play the tracks at low volume. In a well-tuned room, the sound image will be stable in the center in front of you. If there are points in your room that cause harsh reflections, the sound image will blur. In that case, use damping material in those places from which the disturbing sounds emanate.

Side two of the LP contains tracks that can be used to determine whether the channels are correctly assigned as well as burn-in sounds.

You will hear George Carda's voice from the left, from the right and from the center as a mono signal from the center. If the mono signal is not reproduced in the center between the speakers, but seems to be behind the two speakers, one channel is out of phase. Check the corresponding cabling.

With the short announcements "In Polarity" and "Out of Polarity" you can make a short check of the absolute phase of the system. If the phase is correct, the voice is first slightly in front of the speakers centrally in the middle and then slightly behind the speakers in the middle. In the sound examples that follow, the effect can be heard more clearly due to the combination with room reverb.

If your system is out of phase, you need to find the swapped channels. Usually this is either the speaker or pickup connections on one side. This is also referred to as relative phase. Usually this error can be quickly identified and eliminated.

Tracks 2, 3 and 4 contain so-called 'pink noise' (1/f noise) in endless grooves. The needle will remain in this groove until it is lifted off. These tracks help to break in a new pickup system - but only after the system is set up correctly. There is no rule for how long the break-in period should be. George Cardas recommends one hour each in the vertical grooves and horizontal grooves. Since these grooves wear out relatively quickly, you should also use a new groove for each new system. This will set you up for the next 32 systems.

To use the 'Sync Label' you need a white-hot or fluorescent lamp. Flashlights do not work! The strobe effect will make the matching line on the label appear stationary if the speed is right.

Eventually, the LP will have a series of smooth plateaus. With the anti-skating properly adjusted and the turntable set up absolutely straight, the needle should slowly move inward.

A series of hollow sticks of different lengths are struck and the recording happened in a very reverberant room. If the phase is correct, the sticks can be heard in front of or in line with the speakers, and each stroke can be clearly located. If the music appears from behind the speakers, the absolute phase is not correct.
