Why a turntable mat made of vinyl instead of felt or cork?

The decisive physical advantage is matched material impedance: when a vinyl record sits on a vinyl mat, resonances are no longer reflected at a material boundary but dissipated cleanly. Felt or cork, by contrast, create acoustic transitions between materials of different densities, which can subtly colour playback. Vinyl on vinyl is therefore the most physically consistent concept for a turntable mat.

Which turntables does the HARMO-NICER fit?

With a 292 mm outer diameter and 2,4 mm thickness, the HARMO-NICER fits nearly all common turntables with a standard platter — regardless of manufacturer. It is particularly recommended for decks with metal platters made of aluminium or steel, because in addition to improved coupling it also dampens the platter's own resonances.

Do I need to readjust the VTA after installing it?

As a rule, yes. Clearaudio explicitly recommends checking the VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle) after changing mat thickness and readjusting if needed. At 2,4 mm the HARMO-NICER is similar in thickness to a typical felt mat, but even small deviations affect the stylus rake angle and therefore the sound. A brief tonearm-height check ensures the cartridge is once again operating at the optimal angle.

How do I clean the HARMO-NICER?

Exactly like a regular record. A velvet brush before each listening session removes dust; for heavier soiling, any common record cleaner or a record-cleaning machine like the Clearaudio Matrix works well. Because vinyl picks up significantly less electrostatic charge than felt, the mat also attracts noticeably fewer dust particles in the first place.

Does the mat deliver an audible benefit on high-end turntables as well?

Yes — particularly so. High-resolution cartridges and precise tonearms make any improvement to the coupling principle immediately audible — more calm in the soundstage, better-defined bass, more plastic vocals. The HARMO-NICER is not a strictly entry-level product but a serious tuning component that proves its worth even on reference systems.

Can I combine the HARMO-NICER with a record clamp or weight?

Absolutely recommended. A record clamp such as the Clearaudio Clever Clamp or a matching record weight presses the record flat onto the mat and maximises the coupling effect. Especially with slightly warped records, the HARMO-NICER reaches its full potential this way, because contact between record and vinyl mat becomes homogeneous across the entire surface.

Is the HARMO-NICER antistatic?

Vinyl is by nature significantly less prone to electrostatic charging than felt, which builds up charge with every platter rotation and literally attracts dust particles. The HARMO-NICER is not explicitly coated as antistatic, but in everyday use it behaves far more neutrally — record and mat do not build opposing charge peaks against each other, which is noticeable even when lifting the record.

Vinyl Accessories · Turntable Mat

Every vinyl record carries a hidden problem with it: the grooved surface of an LP never lies one hundred percent flat on a precision-machined platter. Microscopic air pockets, tonal shifts and an unstable contact between record and platter are the consequences — and they cost precisely what audiophile listeners value most: dynamics, spatial depth and clean reproduction across the entire frequency range. The Clearaudio HARMO-NICER addresses this fundamental problem with a strikingly logical approach: it is made from the same material as the record itself — pure vinyl.

While conventional turntable mats rely on felt, cork, leather or acrylic, Clearaudio exploits the physical advantage of matched material impedance: vinyl meets vinyl, and resonances are no longer reflected at a material boundary but dissipated cleanly. The result is a noticeably tighter, more homogeneous coupling — the record rests on its own mirror image, so to speak. Unevenness is compensated at a microscopic level, air pockets disappear, and the cartridge stylus operates on an acoustically settled foundation.

Sound & Performance

The sonic gains delivered by the HARMO-NICER become apparent in three concrete areas: bass reproduction becomes tighter and more defined because the cartridge no longer has to fight against micro-vibration noise. The midrange and treble gain precision — fine details, the breath of wind instruments, the vibrato of a violin or the air around a voice become more tangible. And overall dynamics open up noticeably: piano and forte regain their full distance because the signal is no longer compressed by an unclean interface. The manufacturer's name for the product is programmatic — a genuinely more "harmonious" soundstage.

The effect is particularly clear on turntables with metal platters — high-quality aluminium or steel constructions that, by design, tend toward high-frequency self-resonances. The vinyl mat acts as an elegant damper here: it acoustically decouples the record from the metallic resonant body and delivers a more neutral, less forward presentation. German hi-fi press confirmed in practical testing that vocal reproduction becomes more plastic and spatially present — an observation that reproduces reliably across nearly every turntable, from entry-level decks to high-end reference systems.

Clearaudio — High End from Erlangen

The HARMO-NICER comes from one of the world's most respected analogue manufacturers: Clearaudio electronic GmbH, founded in 1978 by Peter Suchy in Erlangen, Germany, and still family-owned today. What began more than four decades ago with a fully symmetrical moving-coil cartridge and a boron cantilever has grown into a complete high-end analogue chain developed entirely in-house — from the entry-level Concept turntable to the reference-class Statement V2. Clearaudio products are exported to more than 80 countries, but every component is designed and built in Erlangen. "Made in Germany" here is not a marketing claim — it is a manufacturing reality.

This engineering culture shows especially clearly in Clearaudio's accessory range: the HARMO-NICER is not an afterthought but the result of a material-science consideration followed through to its conclusion. Pure vinyl without excess plasticiser, a specially prepared top surface and a precision-finished underside — every detail serves the goal of acoustically neutralising the interface between platter and record.

Setup & Handling

Installation could not be simpler: remove the old mat, place the HARMO-NICER on the platter — done. One crucial practical note, emphasised by Clearaudio itself: when changing mat thickness, the VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle) on the tonearm should be readjusted accordingly. At 2,4 mm the HARMO-NICER is similar in thickness to a typical felt mat, but depending on your previous mat the delta can vary — a brief tonearm-height check ensures the stylus rake angle is returned to its optimal range. Skipping this step gives away part of the mat's sonic potential.

Cleaning is a real everyday advantage: the HARMO-NICER can be treated like a regular record — a velvet brush before each listening session, wet cleaning when needed, and even machine cleaning with a unit like the Clearaudio Matrix. Dust and oil deposits adhere far less readily to the smooth vinyl surface than to felt, which becomes electrostatically charged and actively attracts particles. Combined with a record clamp or weight — such as the Clearaudio Clever Clamp — the mat reaches its full effectiveness, because the record then sits flat across its entire surface.
