Cartridges - MM system - Ortofon OM series
The Ortofon OM 5E is the big brother of the OM 3E - and a direct comparison clearly shows where the OM series is heading. Distinct timbres, powerful, contoured bass and a spatiality that places the listener in the middle of the music instead of observing it from the outside: These are qualities that cannot be taken for granted in this price range. Compared to the OM 3E, the OM 5E plays noticeably more confidently and calmly - with more reserves in the scanning and a more balanced, harmonious overall sound. An absolute buy recommendation for beginners and advanced players alike.
Designed for light and very light tonearms - the lack of additional weight reduces the system weight to a remarkable 2.5 g, ideal for ULM tonearms and other ultra-light constructions. Inserting an additional weight increases the weight to 5 g and opens up the system for medium-weight tonearms. The elliptical stylus grind (r/R 8/18 µm) ensures precise, low-distortion tracking with good groove conformity - clearly superior to spherically ground styli.
Only 2.5 g
No additional weight - predestined for ULM and ultra-light tonearms that cannot balance heavier systems
Upgradeable
Stylus 3E needle insert as a replacement - can be upgraded with OM 10, 20, 30 or 40 needle inserts without changing the system
Elliptical ground joint
r/R 8/18 µm - more precise groove conformity than round needles, less distortion, more detail with narrow grooves
The OM 5E sounds surprisingly complete for its price segment: The bass is punchy and contoured without thickening; the mids carry voices and instruments with natural coloration; the high-frequency resolution is remarkably open for an elliptical cut in this price range. What is particularly striking is the spatial imaging - the OM 5E places instruments and voices with a precision and depth that cannot be taken for granted in this class. Anyone who has previously used a system with a round stylus will clearly hear the difference the first time they play it.
The stylus compliance of 20 µm/mN is carefully matched to the interaction with light and medium-weight tonearms - systems that are too stiff sound harsh and distort in light arms, while those that are too soft lose contour and control. The OM 5E strikes a practical balance here, which works reliably with a wide range of players and tonearms. The system's smaller coils also make it more tolerant of high terminating capacitances - as is common on many Japanese integrated amplifiers of the 1990s and 2000s. Balanced sound can therefore be achieved even without a carefully tuned phono preamplifier.
The upgrade principle of the OM series
One of the biggest advantages of the OM series is its consistent upgrade concept: the cartridge stays the same, the needle insert changes. If you start with the OM 5E and want more later, you can upgrade to the OM 10, 20, 30 or 40 styli without changing the system - each stage brings a more refined stylus, more resolution and deeper groove guidance. This protects your investment and makes starting with the OM 5E a conscious decision, not a compromise. The replacement needle insert for the OM 5E is the Stylus 3E, which can be easily reordered if required.
The compact, slimline long-nose housing allows a clear view of the needle tip from above - practical when applying the needle and indispensable when cleaning it. The removable brass insert in the mounting plate enables mounting from above and below, which considerably simplifies mounting in narrow or hard-to-reach headshells.
