FAQ about QED switch consoles

  • What is the difference between the switchover consoles in terms of speaker impedance?
All QED switchover consoles are configured so that the impedance relevant for the amplifier is at least 4 ohms when connecting 8 ohm speakers.
  • What are the advantages of series connection over parallel connection?
Switching consoles for more than two pairs of speakers use a combination of series and parallel connection to ensure a minimum impedance of 4 ohms for the amplifier at all times. In the case of two-way consoles, you can choose between a purely parallel or a series circuit. For 8-ohm speakers (with an amplifier with a minimum impedance of 4 ohms), you should use the parallel circuit. For 4-ohm speakers and an amplifier with a minimum impedance of 4 ohms, you should select the serial circuit.
  • All QED switching consoles have a load of 4 ohms when connecting 8 ohm speakers. What happens if my speakers have an impedance of 6 ohms
    • Check the minimum impedance your amplifier can handle. If it supports loads of 3 ohms or less, you can use 6 ohm speakers without any problems. The rule is: the speakers should always have twice the impedance of the minimum impedance specified for the amplifier.
    • To connect two pairs of 6-ohm speakers, use a switching console with a series connection.
  • Can I also connect the switching consoles to amplifiers that have a higher output power than 150 watts?
The switching consoles are designed for a maximum power consumption of 6 A, which means that they can support a maximum total power of 288 watts when using 8-ohm speakers.
  • If my amplifier is designed for speakers with 6 to 16 ohms, can I also operate it with a 4-ohm load?
No, never. In this case, you should use speakers with an impedance of at least 12 ohms. Although 16-ohm speakers are available, it probably makes more sense to choose a different amplifier.
  • Can I also use the switching consoles in the opposite direction for switching amplifiers?
No, this is not possible. The switching consoles are designed so that two or more pairs of speakers are operated at the output of one amplifier. If a switching desk is connected in reverse, there is a risk that two amplifiers will be connected to one pair of speakers at the same time, which can lead to a defect in one or both amplifiers.
  • What is the technical definition of "transmatch"?
The five-way switching console uses neither a parallel nor a series circuit, but a coupling transformer. You must use 8 ohm speakers if your amplifier is designed for a minimum impedance of 4 ohms. The transformer adjusts the impedance so that a net load of 1.6 ohms (with all five 8-ohm speaker pairs switched on) results in a load of 4 ohms. One pair of speakers (A) is connected directly to the amplifier, while the four "B" pairs are connected via the transformer.
