Hifi accessories - Turntable support

The platter support is more than just a visual detail - it is the direct interface between the rotating platter and the sensitive vinyl groove. This is where it is decided which resonances reach the record, how cleanly the scanning system works and whether the sound image can develop its full depth. The TechneAudio turntable pad is the uncompromising answer from a German manufacturing specialist to this key question - a genuine leather pad 1.5 mm thick with precise perforations that takes aesthetics and acoustic effect equally seriously.

Only the highest quality genuine leather of audiophile-grade thickness is used. The material is physically ideal for effectively absorbing vibration-induced frequency noise - engine rumble, bearing vibrations, impact sound, resonance of the platter - before it couples into the vinyl and reappears there as discoloration of the sound image. In direct comparison to hard-surfaced acrylic or aluminum platters, leather produces a warmer, more closed sound character with a particularly clean bass foundation and fine high-frequency detail.

Sound & mode of operation

From a physical point of view, leather is an almost ideal surface material: it has a lower speed of sound than vinyl and therefore absorbs vibrations that would otherwise be coupled into the record from below. While rigid materials such as acrylic transmit the resonances of the platter almost unchecked, leather acts as an acoustic filter - especially where the stylus navigates through the groove at speeds of up to 40 kHz and any additional vibration becomes visible as discoloration.

Listeners typically report a clearer, more transparent sound with improved detail resolution and a particularly contoured bass that is never overdrawn. Voices move more vividly into the center, the spatial depth gradation gains credibility. Unlike pure felt mats - which dampen but absorb energy - leather retains a pleasant liveliness. The second, often underestimated advantage: leather is hardly statically charged. The annoying crackling that regularly drives vinyl listeners out of their armchairs during dry heating periods remains clearly muted.

The perforation of this variant is more than just a design element. Closed leather pads develop the unpleasant property that the record moves along with the mat when it is removed due to the slight suction effect - a risk for the tonearm joint and a nuisance in everyday life. The fine perforation of the TechneAudio pad ensures controlled air circulation between the vinyl and leather: the record rests snugly but can be lifted off at any time without any problems.

Material & processing

With a leather overlay, the result depends on the quality of the rawhide. Cheap split leather or split leather tends to deform, have an uneven density distribution and an open-pored surface that virtually attracts dust. TechneAudio only uses the best quality leather - firm, even, with a closed surface and uniform material density over the entire contact surface. This is the prerequisite for ensuring that the record lies flat and does not float or sink in in places.

With a material thickness of 1.5 mm, the platter is in a particularly favorable range in terms of sound. It has enough substance to provide effective damping and offer the vinyl record a high-quality bed - without being so thick that the VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle) has to be corrected on the tonearm. With most turntables, the rest can therefore be inserted directly without the need for readjustment. If you have a height-adjustable tonearm, you can tease out the last bit of sonic precision with a minimal adjustment anyway.

Manufacturer & Origin

TechneAudio is a small, highly specialized German manufacturer based in Weilheim-Remetschwiel in southern Baden. Behind the brand is a graduate mechanical engineer who develops and produces his products from concept to finished product in Germany. TechneAudio is a member of the Analogue Audio Association (AAA) - a sign of its deep roots in the audiophile analog scene and its uncompromising focus on the highest reproduction quality.

The company's product range extends from drive cables for belt players to headshell cables made of pure silver and custom-made pickup housings - all of which are products where engineering standards clearly take precedence over any marketing staging. The leather covers have been an established classic in the range for years and are available in several colors. This version in classic black with perforations serves the timeless, understated line - suitable for practically any turntable, from vintage Thorens to modern high-end turntables.

Use & recommendation

The platter measures 295 mm in diameter - the established standard for 12-inch turntables - and therefore fits practically all common turntables, from Pro-Ject and Rega to Thorens and Technics to high-quality turntables from Clearaudio or Transrotor. The TechneAudio pad is particularly recommended as an upgrade to the felt or rubber mats supplied with older turntables - lightweight metal platters in particular benefit noticeably from the substantial damping provided by the genuine leather.

If you want to gently shift the character of your turntable in the direction of more quietness, more detail and more plasticity without having to replace components, this overlay is one of the most effective and at the same time most elegant interventions - a piece of audiophile craftsmanship that gives pleasure every time the vinyl comes to rest on it.
