Basics & Why wash?

Why wash records at all — isn't regular dusting enough?

No — and the difference between dusting and washing is fundamental. A brush or velvet pad only removes loose dust from the groove surface. What it cannot reach is the microstructure of the groove itself, which is approximately 25–300 µm wide and up to 300 µm deep. Over time, release agent residues from the pressing process, fingerprint oils, skin particles, embedded dust and wear debris from the stylus tip accumulate there. These residues adhere to the groove walls, are worked deeper into the groove profile by the stylus with every playback, and cause three measurable problems: more crackling and popping, higher distortion — particularly in the high-frequency range — and accelerated wear of both stylus and groove geometry. Added to this: vinyl is statically charged and actively attracts particles from the air, which re-settle within seconds of dusting. A thorough wet cleaning reaches the groove base, dissolves the baked-in residues and removes them permanently. The result is measurably quieter playback, less distortion and a perceptibly longer lifespan for both record and stylus.

What types of contamination sit in the groove — and which is most damaging?

The groove of a record is a microscopically narrow chamber in which various types of contamination accumulate over its lifetime, differing considerably in their stubbornness and harmfulness. Release agent residues from the pressing process are always present on new records — a thin chemical film that makes it easier to release the finished vinyl from the stamper. They are sonically neutral but a magnet for dust particles. Fingerprint oils are pH-active and can chemically attack the vinyl if they dry out over years. Abrasive particles — quartz sand, metal dust, paper fibres from inner sleeves — are the most dangerous category: they are ground into the groove walls by the stylus, leaving irreversible micro-scratches that permanently degrade the sound and cannot be washed away. Mould occurs on records stored in damp conditions and literally grows into the groove — identifiable by a whitish, cobweb-like or powdery appearance. It can be removed by professional cleaning, provided it has not grown too deep. The conclusion is clear: the earlier and more regularly records are washed, the less abrasive damage occurs.

Is washing worthwhile for new records too — or only for old and used ones?

Explicitly for new records too — and for a reason many underestimate. Every record leaves the pressing plant with chemical release agents on its surface, used during the pressing process to ensure the cooling vinyl releases safely from the stamper. These residues sit directly in the groove and are invisible to the naked eye. On a high-quality system, cleaning a new record makes itself felt immediately: the soundstage becomes clearer, the noise floor drops, spatial imaging improves. With old and used records the gain is naturally often even more marked — residues and deposits accumulated over decades are dissolved, the groove breathes freely again. Second-hand market finds deserve special mention: washing is not optional here but mandatory — the groove is often literally clogged, and playing an unwashed find with a quality stylus is a gamble that can ruin the stylus within a few plays.

The different machine types

What types of record washing machines are there — and how do they differ fundamentally?

There are four fundamentally different cleaning principles, which differ considerably in their method of operation, cleaning depth, effort and price. Each method has specific strengths and limitations:

1. Manual wet cleaning (hand-crank)
The oldest and most affordable system — the classic is the Knosti Disco-Antistat. The record is placed in a trough containing cleaning fluid and rotated by hand-crank or motor through two soft brushes (traditionally goat hair). The fluid dissolves the contamination, the brushes carry it away. The record then dries in the included stand. Advantages: very affordable (from approx. €90), simple, no electricity needed (hand version). Disadvantages: no suction — dissolved dirt remains in the cleaning fluid and can be redistributed; no integrated drying; limited penetration with stubborn deposits.
2. Vacuum suction machine (RCM — Record Cleaning Machine)
The professional principle proven over decades: cleaning fluid is applied to the rotating record via brush or velvet lip and, after a brief dwell time, sucked away by a vacuum suction arm — together with the dissolved dirt. The decisive advantage over manual cleaning: the dirt leaves the record completely and lands in a collection chamber. Examples: Clearaudio Double Matrix Professional Sonic, VPI Industries, Moth Record Cleaner, Okki Nokki, Pro-Ject VC-S. Advantages: very thorough cleaning, dirt is truly removed, proven technology. Disadvantages: loud (turbine), two passes per side needed (apply, suction), price from approx. €300–5,000.
3. Ultrasonic cleaning
The physically most superior principle for deep cleaning: the record is immersed in a water bath in which ultrasonic transducers generate high-frequency sound waves (typically 35–120 kHz). These waves produce microscopically small cavitation bubbles in the liquid, which collapse in the groove and literally blast dirt particles out of the groove structure — completely contactless, without any mechanical contact with the vinyl. Examples: Degritter Mark II, HumminGuru, Knosti Disco-Antistat Ultrasonic, Gläss Record Cleaner, Kuzma. Advantages: contactless cleaning (no abrasion, no scratches possible), excellent penetration, gentle. Disadvantages: stubborn grease stains may occasionally require pre-treatment; water quality critical (distilled water required); price from approx. €500–2,500.
4. Combined systems
Several modern machines combine different principles for maximum cleaning effectiveness. The Clearaudio Double Matrix Professional Sonic combines vacuum suction with a sonic vibration option (low-frequency vibration of the cleaning elements). The Knosti Disco-Antistat Ultrasonic 2.0 combines mechanical brush cleaning with ultrasound. Some systems such as the Gläss Record Cleaner combine rotating brushes, ultrasound and active drying in a single pass (all-in-one). Advantage: highest cleaning efficiency through synergy of methods. Disadvantage: higher price and complexity.

What is cavitation — and why does ultrasound clean the groove so effectively?

Cavitation is a fascinating physical phenomenon that explains the outstanding cleaning power of ultrasound. When ultrasonic transducers send high-frequency pressure waves (35–120 kHz) into a liquid, microscopic vacuum bubbles form — so-called cavitation bubbles — with a diameter of just a few micrometres. These bubbles are highly unstable: they collapse explosively in fractions of a millisecond. Upon collapsing they release extreme energy locally: miniature pressure waves, tiny water jets and momentary temperatures of several thousand degrees (in microscopically small zones). This energy release occurs everywhere in the liquid — including deep in the grooves of the record, where no mechanical tool can reach. The result: dirt particles, grease residues, release agent deposits and even mould spores are literally blasted out of the groove geometry without the vinyl being touched. The groove surface itself remains completely undamaged — PVC is robust enough to withstand the cavitation process unharmed. In practical terms: ultrasound reaches contamination that no other cleaning method can dissolve.

What is the difference between vacuum suction and ultrasound — which cleans better?

Both methods clean excellently but have different strengths. Vacuum suction is the more established technology with a long reference history in the audiophile world. Its strength lies in mechanical effectiveness: the fluid is applied, dissolves the dirt through surfactant action, and the vacuum suction arm draws the fluid and dirt together completely off the record surface. Stubborn grease stains adhering to the surface are effectively removed by the mechanical wiping action of the lip seal. Ultrasound, by contrast, works contactlessly and in depth: cavitation bubbles reach places that no arm, brush or lip seal can ever touch. For records that are already finely scratched, ultrasound is gentler — no friction, no pressure. For heavily contaminated records with stubborn grease stains, vacuum suction can be more effective because the mechanical component dissolves more specifically. The optimum combination: first pre-wash mechanically (vacuum or brush), then ultrasound for deep cleaning — exactly what professional cleaning services and demanding collectors do.

Cleaning fluid & water quality

Which cleaning fluid is correct — and why is water quality so important?

The choice of cleaning fluid is at least as important as the choice of machine. The basis of any good record cleaning fluid is high-purity distilled or bidistilled water — and this point is non-negotiable.

Normal tap water contains lime, minerals, chlorine compounds and other dissolved substances. Upon drying they leave mineral residues directly in the groove — a whitish film that is at least as sonically harmful as the original contamination. Distilled water (conductivity ideally below 1 µS/cm) dries without leaving residues.

Surfactants are added to the distillate base — surface-active substances that lower the surface tension of the water, allowing it to penetrate into the groove (pure water without surfactants would bead on the groove surface rather than penetrating). The concentration must be low: too much surfactant leaves a film, too little is ineffective.

Many high-quality cleaners contain small amounts of isopropyl alcohol (IPA), which dissolves fats and oils that water-based surfactants alone cannot remove. Important: the alcohol content must not be too high — above approx. 20–30%, isopropanol can partially dissolve the PVC and long-term damage the groove geometry. Some purists forgo alcohol entirely and use high-purity enzymatic cleaners instead.

Ready-made cleaning concentrates from established manufacturers — Clearaudio Cleaning Fluid, KNOSTI Antistat-Fluid, Vinyl Passion, Audio Intelligent — are generally well-balanced and recommendable. Home-mixed recipes (e.g. 75% bidistilled water + 25% isopropanol + 1–2 drops of surfactant-free washing-up liquid) are also widely used and work well but require precise dosing.

Do records need rinsing with distilled water after cleaning — or is one pass enough?

With high-quality cleaners formulated for residue-free drying, a rinsing pass is not strictly necessary. With cheaper cleaners or high surfactant concentrations, however, a final rinse with pure bidistilled water is advisable to remove surfactant films. Ultrasonic fully-automatic machines such as the Degritter address this constructively: they feature two tanks — one for cleaning fluid, one for pure rinse water — and automatically run a rinse cycle after the main wash. With vacuum machines, many experienced collectors recommend two passes for heavily contaminated records: first with cleaner, then with pure distilled water followed by suction. The water should be changed after approx. 20–30 records as it becomes laden with dissolved contamination.

Practical use & results

How often should records be washed — is there a recommendation?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer — the right timing depends strongly on the condition of the record and its usage. As a guideline:

New pressings: Wash once before the record is played for the first time. Release agent residues from the pressing plant are always present.

Used records from private collections (stored cleanly, with inner sleeve): A single thorough clean, then routine dusting before each play is sufficient.

Second-hand market finds and used records of unknown origin: Always wash before a quality stylus is placed on them — without exception.

Regularly played records: With intensive use (daily or several times a week), cleaning every 20–50 plays is advisable, depending on the dust level in the listening room.

Records from professional settings (DJ use, studios): After every intensive session.

Can washing remove scratches from the groove?

No — and this point is important for setting realistic expectations. A record-washing machine can remove dirt, residues, grease, mould and release agents. It cannot repair physical damage to the vinyl itself — micro-scratches, groove damage, pressing defects. There is, however, a frequently experienced surprise: records that crackled or scraped audibly before cleaning sound noticeably quieter afterwards — not because scratches have disappeared, but because the scratches were previously filled with dirt that generated additional noise. After cleaning the scratches are still present but clean — and the stylus can trace the groove geometry more precisely, stressing the cartridge's error correction less. What sounds like a miracle is physically explainable: a clean scratch disturbs playback less than a dirty one. True deep scratches that have irreversibly damaged the vinyl, however, will always remain audible.

What role does drying play — and why is it so important?

Drying is an often underestimated but critical step in the cleaning process. A wet or damp record must under no circumstances be played or returned to its sleeve. Moisture and stylus: Playing a wet or damp record forms a thin film of water between stylus and groove surface. This dramatically alters friction properties and can damage the stylus suspension or attack the cantilever material — particularly with sensitive cartridges with aluminium foil cantilevers. Moisture and inner sleeve: Storing a not-fully-dried record in an inner sleeve promotes mould growth. This may take a while with one record — but in poor ventilation and warm temperatures, mould can develop within weeks. Mineral residues: Even with distilled water: complete drying is important to avoid evaporation rings forming. Vacuum machines have the advantage that they remove most of the moisture during suction — the record then only needs a few minutes of air drying. Ultrasonic machines without integrated drying require an external drying stand and at least 15–30 minutes of air drying per side.

Can mould be removed from records — and what needs to be considered?

Yes — and this is one of the most important tasks of a professional record-washing machine. Mould on records (identifiable by whitish, greyish-white or sometimes reddish deposits, often with a cobweb-like or powdery appearance) is more common than many realise — particularly with records stored in damp cellars, lofts or poorly ventilated rooms. Mould literally grows into the groove and bonds with the vinyl. Without professional cleaning, it cannot be safely removed by any other method. Ultrasonic cleaning is the first choice for mouldy records: cavitation bubbles dissolve the deposit from the groove geometry without applying mechanical pressure to the vinyl. Vacuum cleaning is also very effective and may require several wash cycles for heavy mould infestation. Important: heavily mouldy records should be treated individually to avoid contaminating the cleaning fluid and other records. Change the wash water immediately after mouldy records. After cleaning, the record dries completely before being placed in a new, clean inner sleeve. With very heavy mould infestation — growing deep, still visible after several cleanings — complete removal may no longer be possible.

For records in very heavily contaminated condition (mould, sticky surfaces, visible oil contamination), we may recommend an intensive wash cycle (Superclean mode), which we decide independently upon receipt if necessary. You receive your records back clean, dry and in fresh antistatic HDPE inner sleeves — provided you add this supplementary service.

Do you recommend flattening records directly after washing?

Yes — and the sequence is mandatory: wash first, then flatten. Never the other way around. The flattening process heats the record to up to 59–60°C and then allows it to cool slowly. Any contamination still present in the groove at that point is baked deeper into the groove structure by the heat and can no longer be removed. A freshly washed and fully dried record, by contrast, benefits ideally from the subsequent tempering process: the groove is clean, the thermal relaxation process can work without interference, and the result is a record in optimum condition — flat, clean and sonically at the level the vinyl can offer.
