NO ARTIST - XLO Reference Recordings - Test & Burn-In CD (HDCD)
The test and burn-in CD offered by XLO Kabel and Reference Recordings is a valuable tool for proper setup and wiring of your music system. The burn-in and demagnetization tracks will help you get the most out of your system. Using examples from the Reference Recordings catalog, you'll learn a lot not only about correct phasing, but also about correct dynamics and miking.
1. channel identification - are left and right channels connected correctly
2. voice in phase - the voice must be centered between the speakers
3. voice out of phase - the voice seems to be completely detached in the room and has no spatial representation
4. clapping - this repeated clapping sound is used by sound engineers to familiarize themselves with the sound characteristics of the monitoring room. One can wonderfully assess the reverberation of the room at any position. Acoustics specialists are often seen clapping their hands as they walk through rooms to do just that. However, since each human clapper is slightly different and the clapper himself has acoustic influence, this track is more suitable.
5 315 Hz test tone - this tone is used to detect balance differences on the electronics. A multimeter connected to the outputs of the system can wonderfully show channel differences in level.
6. Prof. Johnson demonstrates room acoustics - a multi-microphone installation in a large studio is used to demonstrate spatial imaging. Prof. Johnson wanders around the room and you can acoustically follow his voice and the instruments being struck. He also gives an example of a miking error that is common.
7. demagnetization sweep - is used to remove magnetic charges within all components of a hi-fi system. Should be performed regularly. Please be sure to follow the instructions in the manual for use with pickups!
8. low frequency demagnetization fade - Since the crossovers in active as well as passive loudspeakers do not pass the high frequency sounds in track 7, this track is especially intended for demagnetizing the basses. Do not use this track for demagnetizing pickups under any circumstances.
9. burn-in tones - all components of your music system need to be tuned in to achieve the best possible playback quality. This track speeds up the process tremendously. Set the track to repeat and run it continuously. Play the track at normal volume. This will not damage your sound system. If you only want to burn in a hi-fi component but not the speakers, or if you feel disturbed by the sounds, you can put an 8-ohm resistor with 10 watts power handling between the ends of your speaker cables. These resistors are available for small money at electrical stores and standard quality will suffice for this application. This track is not suitable for burning in cartridge systems. These must be broken in mechanically.
10. mono music track in phase - the voice and all musicians should be in the middle between the speakers.
11. mono piece of music in phase - the voice and all the musicians should be completely undefined in the room and not seem to come out of nowhere and be presented over a large width. The less your speakers are locatable in this, the better they will reproduce when the signal is in phase.
12. stereo in wrong absolute phase - this track sounds fine at first listen, but listen harder and you'll find that the musical performance is not really lifelike. While the track is in the same phase for left and right, it is overall out of phase. That is, if in the original an airflow went towards the microphones, the reproducing speakers simulate an airflow going away from the listener. Measurement-wise, the result is the same signal, but there are music listeners who can hear the difference. If you don't hear it, don't worry, not everyone perceives this difference.
13. Stormy Weather - the piece of the previous tracks in correct phase and in full length. The singer Eileen Farrell had celebrated her 70th birthday shortly before and you can hear the age of her voice wonderfully. The sense of spaciousness does not come from the recording room, but was artificially generated. Pay attention to the position of the flugelhorn at the back of the stage.
14. shiny stockings - big band jazz with a wide dynamic range. The piece starts very quietly with a piano solo and increases more and more. At the end there are five trumpets, three trombones, five saxophones, acoustic bass and drums. If your sound system can reproduce all this without smearing the instruments or capitulating to the dynamic range, then you have done a lot right.
15. Morton Gould: Derivations for Clarinet and Band - There's a big band playing here, and they have the opportunity to pick out the wind instruments individually. Recorded in the brilliant acoustics of the Medinah Temple in Chicago.
Janácek: Sinfonietta, "The Queen's Monastery" - This track is from the first symphonic HDCD recorded in the Czech Republic. It features 26 violins and an equal number of larger string instruments. Contains many solo moments and the horn blasts at 3:45 are particularly interesting.
17th Biebl: Ave Maria - Gigantic choral recording with 30 voices in the center and another 200 voices on the sides. Spatial imaging extends beyond the speakers on both sides. The recording was made in the "cathedral mode" of the customizable Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.
18th Weinberger: Polka and Fugue - This show piece, after a common polka, presents all the instruments of a symphony orchestra in turn and also their position in the orchestral structure. With the introduction of the organ at 5:38, the orchestra continues to increase in level and the combination of organ and bass stops is a challenge for any sound system. Most music systems will begin to distort at high levels. Carefully feel your way to the limit of your system. Good luck!

This is the revised reissue of the Reference Recordings recordings RR-63 and RR-73. In addition to the complete contents of these two recordings, two new pieces are also included. The veteran trumpet and flugelhorn player performs with the DePaul University Big Band under the direction of Bob Lark.
Clark Terry is originally from St. Louis, Missouri, but has played on all seven continents during his career. He was a soloist in the big bands of Duke Ellington and Count Basie, played for years on "The Tonight Show," and has won multiple Grammy awards. In addition to a star on the "Walk of Fame", he has received thirteen honorary doctorates for his life's work in music.
The recordings on this HDCD are from 1995 and 1996 and have been re-edited.
