"We hear the power from the socket" is an old hi-fi saying. Actually, it once meant that modern hi-fi devices convert the mains current so that it can be used to operate loudspeakers. While every electrical engineer knows that the circuitry, the components used and their dimensions have an effect on the sound of a device, the influence of mains fuses was largely ignored until the beginning of the third millennium. Then, however, some audiophiles noticed that replacing the fuse also made a subtle difference to the sound. HiFi-Tuning in Berlin was one of the first companies to have fine fuses manufactured in Germany according to audiophile standards.
In the beginning, the topic was still considered to be a crazy idea, but at the latest after it was publicized that the damping factor of a transistor amplifier, for example, could be significantly increased by replacing a miniature fuse with a high-quality one, the topic became an important part of the hi-fi world. Hi-fi magazines at home and abroad have since been unanimous in their advice to try it out, as it is rare to be able to purchase such a sound gain with such a manageable investment.
Today, HiFi-Tuning offers a whole range of audiophile fuses that are still manufactured by hand in Germany. Owner and sound tinkerer Bernd Ahne uses ceramic housings instead of glass. The fuse wire and end caps are always made from the same material. The fuse wire is damped by a special coating. Finally, the finished fuses are cryogenically treated in Berlin and individually packaged by hand. All fuses have a significantly lower internal resistance compared to industrial mass-produced goods.
Supreme³ fuses are available from HiFi-Tuning in three standard sizes: 1. the well-known 5 x 20 mm miniature fuse, typical for many European and Japanese devices. 2. the US miniature fuse with 6.3 x 32 mm, which is often found in American devices. 3. the protective fuse for corresponding circuit breakers in the switch box with 10.3 x 38 mm.
To find the right fuse, you need to find out which size is installed in your appliance. The respective fuse is then also stamped with the fuse rating (e.g. 250 mA) and the letters F (fast), T (slow) and occasionally XT (extra slow). Please disconnect the mains plug before opening the housing! If you do not want to tinker with your appliance yourself, you can get help from your local dealer. Existing fuses must always and only be replaced with fuses of the same value!
Copper
The copper version of the Supreme³ fuse has a black ceramic housing and would probably never have been created without the help of George Cardas. He provided HiFi-Tuning with a bar of Grade One Low Eddy Copper. Cardas copper is oxygen-free and has a purity of 99.9999%. This is the basic material from which the exclusive Cardas cables are made. In this fuse, the fuse thread and the end caps are made of the same material. The end caps are also plated directly with 24 carat gold. If you look closely, you will see the Nautilus, the Cardas Audio logo, embossed on the end caps.
The Hifi-Tuning fuses naturally comply with the IEC 60127-2 standard for miniature fuse-links and are CE-compliant.
A final tip: There is actually no reason for a fuse to have a wire direction. However, there are always audiophile listeners who can hear a sonic difference in the installation direction of individual components. Please try it out for yourself!
