Anti-skating force is one of the most complex and frequently misunderstood physical influences acting on the tonearm of a turntable. It is caused by the friction between the stylus and the record surface - especially when the headshell is at an offset angle - and consistently pulls the tonearm towards the center of the record. If the stylus is placed on a groove-free test record, for example, this phenomenon can be observed immediately as the tonearm automatically moves inwards.
