Ten years of development, a worldwide patent and a magnet technology that was previously reserved for moving coil systems: the Rega Nd3 is no ordinary MM cartridge. It is the first of its kind to use an N55 neodymium magnet - the extremely powerful rare-earth material that Rega has been using for years in its renowned MC systems. The result is a fundamentally rethought generator that consistently addresses the weaknesses of conventional MM cartridges and redefines the category.
The Nd3 is the successor to the Elys 2, which has proven itself over decades - and clearly surpasses it in all measurable and audible disciplines. Where the Elys 2 did a solid job, the Nd3 plays on a different level: wider stage, calmer background, more fine detail, more energy. International trade press and dealers reacted unanimously: the British magazine The Ear awarded it the Best Buy award, AVForums spoke of the benchmark for MM cartridges in this price range.

The generator - the heart of
What fundamentally distinguishes the Nd3 from classic MM systems lies deep inside the body: the completely redesigned generator. Conventional MM cartridges use ferrite bar magnets with multiple bent mu-metal pole pieces - but every bend, every punching process measurably degrades the magnetic properties of the mu-metal. Rega has deliberately eliminated this compromise: In the Nd3, the mu-metal pole pieces are completely straight, cut in half and arranged symmetrically. This minimizes losses and creates a geometrically precise channel balance that was previously reserved for MC systems.
This architecture is only made possible by the N55 neodymium magnet - the world's most powerful commercially available permanent magnet. Its high force potential allows the coils and the magnet to be significantly smaller and lighter than with ferrite-based designs. The result: a greatly reduced moving mass at the needle carrier end of the generator, which directly benefits tracking accuracy and high-frequency reproduction. The miniaturized parallel coils are wound in Rega's own factory from 38-micron wire with exactly 1,275 turns - a meticulous process that results in a generator with the lowest inductance and impedance, optimized for the finest high-frequency resolution.
Housing, mounting & pivot pad
The enclosure of the Nd3 is directly inspired by Rega's most successful MC line: glass fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), manufactured using a zero tolerance injection molding process. This material is lightweight, highly rigid and low in resonance - with a total weight of around 6 grams, it is an extremely tonearm bearing-friendly design. The screws are screwed into the body from above, without insert nuts: the threads are cut directly into the PPS, which ensures a backlash-free, low-vibration connection with the headshell.
The pivot pad design deserves special attention: by eliminating the mechanical connection between the needle carrier housing and the main body, the needle works without disturbing resonance paths - tracking accuracy and stylus stability benefit directly. Rega's 3-point mounting system offers a stiffer coupling to the tonearm compared to the common 2-hole standard and enables automatic tracking angle alignment on Rega's own tonearms - no need to use a protractor. In any case, mounting on third-party tonearms is less complicated than with many competitors thanks to the screws accessible from above.
The Nd3 sounds as it is designed: with unusual energy, dynamics and stage depth for an MM cartridge. Reviewers at Analog Planet described it as exceptionally lively, with pace, color and a sense of rhythm - and without tipping over into exuberance or coloration. The elliptical diamond stylus on an aluminum cantilever delivers precise, detailed tracking; the stylus contact force of 1.75 g holds the groove confidently without straining the records.
Particularly noteworthy: direct comparisons with the previous top seller Elys 2 and the more expensive Exact showed, according to independent dealer tests, that the Nd3 outperforms both predecessors in all disciplines - more detail resolution, less surface noise, wider stage, better instrument separation. The Nd3 is available as factory equipment on Rega Planar 2 and Planar 3 and is a superior upgrade tip for almost any system with a 47 kΩ MM phono stage and matching tonearm.
If you are looking for even more, the Nd5 (micro line needle) and the Nd7 are the logical next step in the same Nd family - same generator foundation, even more refined scanning profile. The Nd3 is the entry-level model, priced at the same level as the Elys 2 - an astonishing statement given the leaps in performance.
Rebuild program & sustainability
Rega thinks beyond the purchase: the manufacturer's own rebuild program makes it possible to exchange a worn or damaged Nd3 at an authorized dealer for a fully refitted, tested unit - at a price equivalent to that of a replacement from another manufacturer. Every rebuild system undergoes the same quality control as a new unit. Cantilever, needle and pivot pad are completely renewed. An investment that pays off in the long term.
The Nd3 is supplied in fully recyclable packaging - assembly instructions are printed directly on the packaging pages to save space, without the need for a separate insert sheet. A Lifetime Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects rounds off the overall package.
