Analog - Blank cassette - Made in Germany

The audio cassette is experiencing a renaissance that is exceeding all expectations. In recent years, cassette sales in Europe and North America have increased continuously - driven by a generation seeking the physical and another that remembers the warm, immediate sound of the tape. Revox, for decades one of the sonic reference addresses in the analog audio world, has consistently prepared for this moment. The result is the Revox Grandmaster Audio Cassette - not just a new cassette, but a statement: the return of a European manufactory cassette production after a break of over 22 years, handmade in the Black Forest.

The basis for this is an extraordinary cooperation: Revox has teamed up with the National Audio Company from Springfield, Missouri - the largest remaining cassette manufacturer in the USA, in uninterrupted production since 1969. A complete National Audio production line has been installed at the Revox factory in Villingen, making Revox the operator of one of the largest cassette production facilities in Europe. The last German cassette production was discontinued in 2003 at EMTEC in Ludwigshafen. What Revox is now building in Villingen is more than just a nostalgic product - it is industrial pioneering work.

The tape - the heart of the Grandmaster

At the heart of the Grandmaster is a magnetic tape that is produced exclusively for Revox according to the legendary Grandmaster formula. It is a type I ferro tape from current production - that means: no leftover stock, no used-up old stock, but freshly manufactured tape from a production facility that was set up especially for this project. Ferro tape (Normal Position, Type I) is the most universal of all cassette tape types: compatible with every cassette deck ever built and optimized for all common bias and equalization settings. The Ferro / Normal Position setting is sufficient for best results - a direct plug-and-play for all cassette players without fine-tuning.

The sound character of Ferroband is the basic analog signature that many associate with the cassette: a warm, full-bodied midrange, a pleasantly natural treble without sharpness and a balanced, well-controlled bass. The Grandmaster formula refines these characteristics through precisely coordinated magnetic particle composition and coating geometry. The result is a cassette whose sound is reminiscent of the best ferro tapes of the golden cassette era - without the ageing problems of decades-old tape material.

Case, packaging & features

The cassette housing was specially designed for Revox and manufactured in Europe. The 5-fold screw connection - a feature that was reserved for only the highest quality studio and audiophile cassettes even in the heyday of the cassette - ensures absolute dimensional stability and precise, even tape movement. The more screws a cassette housing has, the less room there is for mechanical tolerances in the tape guide system. The result is smoother, more even tape tracking and therefore a more stable audio signal without wow and flutter.

The reusable recording locks are another quality feature: if the tab is removed, the recording can no longer be overwritten - if it is reinserted, the deck releases the recording. Anyone who wants to archive their recordings and still remain flexible will appreciate this detailed solution. The cassette comes in a transparent snap box, supplemented by a generously sized triple-folded J-Card with four labeling fields for title, artist, side A and B as well as a high-quality double sticker set, which takes into account the physical collector's character of the cassette.

Production: Villingen & National Audio Company

The story behind this cassette is remarkable. Revox enlisted the active support of the National Audio Company in Springfield, Missouri - the oldest and largest remaining cassette factory in the world, in continuous operation since 1969 - to set up cassette production. Complete production machines were transferred from National Audio Company to the Revox factory in Villingen in the Black Forest and installed there. This created one of the few, if not the largest, cassette production facilities in Europe from scratch - in a company known for its uncompromising approach to manufacturing quality.

Every cassette is handmade in Villingen: In this context, that means not just manual finishing, but intensive quality control for small quantities - a production model that is fundamentally different from the mass production of the cassette heyday. Initially, the Grandmaster is available in a Type I version. A Type II version with sound characteristics similar to chrome dioxide - and thus enhanced dynamics and increased high-frequency clarity - is planned for the future and will systematically expand the product portfolio.
