Which KLEI Harmony plug is right for me — and what distinguishes each model?

All KLEI Harmony plugs share the same core construction: tag-shaped pins with minimised mass, an anti-short shield, snap-fit mechanism and a high-temperature thermoplastic housing. The decisive difference between models lies in the pin material and its metallurgical processing — both factors directly determine the conductivity rating and sonic character.

Model Signal Pin Ground Pin IACS What Makes It Special
Classic Harmony KLEI PureCopper™ KLEI PureCopper™ >101% Entry point into the Harmony line — outstanding price-to-performance ratio for anyone upgrading from standard RCA plugs
Copper Harmony KLEI PureCopper™ (higher spec) KLEI PureCopper™ (higher spec) >101% Refined copper concept — noticeably more open soundstage and better resolution of fine detail; most popular choice among experienced DIY builders

Pure22 Harmony KLEI PureSilver™ KLEI PureSilver™ >106% Both pins in PureSilver — wider soundstage, improved bass attack and definition; according to KLEI, approaches the performance of the former Absolute Harmony
Perfect22 Harmony KLEI highest spec (Layering) KLEI highest spec (Layering) >101–105%+ Current flagship — proprietary metallurgical layering process (beyond plating), glass-filled thermoplastic housing, mathematically modelled pin geometry; maximum resolution and soundstage

What is the KLEI Harmony philosophy — and why does a connector affect sound at all?

A connector is not a passive component — it is an active part of the signal path. Conventional RCA plugs use a large metal collar as the ground return, which generates significant stray capacitance, inductive loops and eddy current turbulence. Keith Louis Eichmann showed the way with the original Bullet Plug: away from the metal collar, towards a single-point ground contact with minimal mass. The KLEI Harmony line develops this principle further: both signal and ground pins are optimised through mathematical modelling for mass, thickness and conductivity. Capacitive, inductive and EMF influences are reduced to a minimum. The result is not a sound character — it is the absence of colouration. More open, blacker background, more musical: that is how listeners worldwide describe the difference versus standard connectors.

How is an IACS rating above 100% possible — and what does it mean sonically?

The IACS standard (International Annealed Copper Standard) defines soft-annealed copper as the 100% reference value — a historically fixed value, not an absolute ceiling. Pure silver, for example, measures at 105–106% IACS. Certain high-purity or crystallographically optimised copper and silver alloys can exceed the 100% mark when their microstructure favours electron flow. KLEI exploits precisely these metallurgical principles: the PureCopper alloy exceeds 101% IACS, and the PureSilver alloy exceeds 106% IACS. Sonically, higher conductivity means improved transmission of fast transient signals and fine micro-detail — audible as greater resolution, improved dynamics and a darker, quieter background noise floor.

How difficult is it to terminate KLEI Harmony plugs — what do I need to know?

All KLEI Harmony plugs are designed for DIY builders of all experience levels. The tag-shaped solder tabs offer considerably more surface area than the round pins of conventional RCA plugs, and the anti-short shield between signal and ground guards against the most common soldering mistakes. The high-temperature thermoplastic housing withstands silver solder without any deformation — a clear advantage over many competing products. Key steps: thread the rubber grommet onto the cable first, tin the cable end and solder tabs separately, then flow them together briefly with a hot iron. A soldering station of at least 40 watts and quality flux are all that is needed. All Harmony models accept cable outer diameters from 4 to 9.5 mm (with the grommet from 3.5 mm inner diameter).

Which cables pair particularly well with KLEI plugs?

KLEI plugs are sonically neutral — they neither warm nor cool the signal, but pass the cable's character through without addition or subtraction. This is a strength that presupposes a quality cable. Solid-core constructions in high-purity copper or silver have proven particularly effective — Duelund Copper in Silk, Duelund DCA, cables from the Jupiter range, and Van Damme Blue are all frequently cited combinations. Multi-strand cables with high capacitance benefit less from the KLEI pin geometry than geometrically clean single-conductor designs. For phono use, low-capacitance tonearm cables are the natural match. For digital S/PDIF applications, the cable must maintain 75-ohm impedance — Belden 1694A and Canare L-5CFW are reliable choices.

Why does KLEI recommend at least 125 hours of burn-in, and is it the same for all models?

The burn-in recommendation has a sound physical basis: metal crystal lattices and solder joints undergo subtle changes during operation under signal flow and thermal cycling — a relaxation process that measurably affects the electrical properties of the connection. The dielectric properties of the housing material also stabilise over an initial operating period under alternating fields. In practice, freshly terminated KLEI plugs often sound slightly constrained or analytical during the first hours before opening into full spatial and tonal naturalness. The 125-hour guideline applies to all models in the Harmony range. A practical approach: run the newly built cable continuously on a secondary system for a week before forming a considered judgement.

HiFi accessories - RCA plugs - DIY cable assembly

The RCA plug is one of the most used audio contacts in the world - and at the same time one of the most neglected. Yet every signal transmission begins and ends right here: at the plug. Keith Louis Eichmann, the Australian engineer and sound perfectionist, proved back in the 1990s with his legendary bullet plug that fundamental design decisions have a direct, audible impact on sound quality. The KLEI™ Copper Harmony Plug is the logical evolution of this philosophy - a plug that not only sounds better than the original, but also better than its own predecessor.

Signal and ground contacts are made of a proprietary pure copper alloy (KLEI PureCopper™) with a thick silver coating - not full silver, but a substantial overlay that further improves conductivity and prevents oxidation in the long term. At >101% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard), the conductivity of this alloy even exceeds that of pure copper - a value that puts typical gold-plated brass at around 28% IACS. The result is a plug that transmits the audio signal with measurable and audible superiority - in a price segment that is almost unrivaled for the level offered.

>101 % IACS
Conductivity of the copper pins exceeds even pure annealed copper - 320 % better than gold-plated brass
Single-point ground
Eliminates eddy currents, capacitive reactance and micro arcing of the classic ring ground design
Easy mounting
2-screw housing, snap mechanism for secure fit - cable opening 3.5-9.5 mm
Design principle & sound

The classic RCA plug has a design-related problem: its ring-shaped earth contact generates eddy currents, capacitive reactance and - in the case of plug connections with mechanical tolerance - fine micro arcs. All three effects cloud the audio signal in a way that is barely measurable but clearly perceptible in terms of sound. Keith Louis Eichmann's answer to this is logical: the Copper Harmony replaces the ring contact with a single-point ground pin based on the star grounding principle - a technique that is considered a reference in audiophile electronics construction. The result: a black, quiet background field from which the finest micro-details and spatiality emerge without a veil.

The shape, mass and material thickness of the ground and signal pins have been optimized according to a proprietary mathematical formula to minimize the skin effect - the tendency of high-frequency components to use only the surface of a conductor. The thick silver coating on the pure copper substrate further improves the surface conductivity and permanently protects the plug from oxidation. Anyone who already knows and appreciates the legendary Eichmann bullet plugs will recognize this: The Copper Harmony sounds faster, more transparent and more spacious - a statement that has been consistently confirmed in numerous independent listening reports worldwide.

Installation & compatibility

Installation is pleasingly uncomplicated for an audiophile plug in this class: The housing is secured with two screws, and a removable rubber grommet system covers cable diameters from 3.5 mm to 9.5 mm - making the Copper Harmony suitable for the vast majority of common audiophile cables, from fine signal cables to more powerful cable assemblies. The redesigned snap mechanism of the plug head ensures a defined, secure fit in the RCA socket with easy disconnectability at the same time - without the sluttering of conventional plugs or the undesirable jamming of some bolt connections. The ground pin has a threaded tooth profile that creates an automatic star-point ground connection with metal housings.

A break-in period of at least 125 hours is recommended - as with all high-quality contacts, the material needs some time to develop its optimum conductivity. The 4-pack contains two connectors marked white and two red (yellow KLE logo) for clear left/right channel assignment. Can be used for all types of analog signal cables - and also expressly recommended for digital coaxial cables (S/PDIF) due to the high impedance and reduced jitter transmission.

The Harmony series at a glance

The Copper Harmony is the entry into the KLEI Harmony connector series and offers the best price-performance ratio of the entire line. The next level, the Silver Harmony, replaces the copper ground pin with a silver alloy pin (>106 % IACS) and thus achieves an even quieter sound base. This is followed by the Pure Harmony (both pins in silver alloy) and the Absolute Harmony (highest purity level, maximum IACS values). If you want to build up or upgrade your cable system, the Copper Harmony is the logical and convincing entry point - with a leap in sound that justifies the investment from the very first day of listening.
