The Goldring E-Series follows a clear logic of progression - from the carbon stylus of the E1 to the aluminum carrier of the E2 and the elliptical cut of the E3 to the E4, the flagship of the series. What fundamentally distinguishes the E4 from all its predecessors is not just an improved cut, but a different category of diamond: a naked super-elliptical needle made from a single homogeneous piece of diamond - not glued to a carrier pin, but polished as a monolithic component. This makes a physically measurable and sonically audible difference.
Combined with the equally new hollow aluminum stylus carrier, Magnetic Duplex Technology™ and factory azimuth fine-tuning, which is not provided in this form on the other E models, the E4 positions itself as the system that makes the most of the possibilities of an entry-level or mid-range turntable - without requiring the leap into another price class.

The naked diamond needle - the decisive difference
With E1 to E3, the diamond is glued to a needle carrier pin - a common and proven method, but one that has design limitations. The bonding point between the diamond and the carrier is a mechanical interface with its own mass and elasticity. With high-frequency groove modulations, this connection can introduce minimal delays and distortions. With the E4, this interface is completely eliminated: The bare stylus is made from a single homogeneous piece of diamond and polished. The effective mass of the stylus decreases, the stiffness increases, and the stylus follows even the tightest groove modulations with less overshoot and less distortion. The 7.6 micrometer profile of the super-elliptical cut (0.3 × 0.7 mil) also penetrates much deeper into the groove flanks than spherical needles - high-frequency details are revealed that remain physically hidden to the E1 and E2.
Hollow carrier & azimuth precision
The hollow aluminum needle carrier of the E4 is not the same as the solid milled aluminum pin of the E2 and E3. The hollow design reduces the weight of the carrier even further, while the tubular structure ensures exceptionally high bending stiffness - a well-known principle in lightweight construction. The lower the moving mass of the needle carrier, the more precisely and instantaneously it follows the groove, especially during fast transients in the treble and upper mids. Resonances of the carrier itself, which can subtly colour the sound, are also minimized.
Another unique feature of the E4 within the E series is the individual azimuth fine-tuning at the factory. The azimuth describes the angle of the needle verticals to the record surface - it must be exactly perpendicular to the groove. An incorrectly set azimuth increases the crosstalk between the channels and distorts the channel balance. Because most entry-level and mid-range turntables do not offer an azimuth adjustment option, it is all the more important that the cartridge has this setting set at the factory. Goldring makes this adjustment for each individual E4 - an effort that is not made as standard with cheaper cartridges.
The flagship of the E series
The four models in the E series share the system body, Magnetic Duplex Technology™ and mounting standard - and differ specifically in the stylus carrier, stylus cut and manufacturing depth. The E1 (red) uses carbon and a spherical needle. The E2 (green) switches to aluminum but retains the spherical cut. The E3 (purple ) combines aluminum with a super-elliptical but bonded diamond. Finally, the E4 (blue) takes the last logical step: bare needle, hollow carrier, individual factory adjustment. It is the system for all those who want to exploit the last sonic potential of their turntable - before an investment in the tonearm or the electronics would make more sense than a further system upgrade.
