Record Brushes, Rollers & Vinyl Care Accessories – clean grooves, clear sound

A record is only as good as its surface. Even microscopic dust particles or fibre residue produce the familiar crackle, cause long-term groove wear and shorten stylus life. With the right care tools – carbon fibre brushes, adhesive rollers, stylus cleaners and cleaning fluids – you recover the sonic precision and longevity that new pressings should deliver, and that older records can often surprisingly regain.

Key Facts at a Glance
  • Mode of action: Mechanical particle removal + dissipation of static charge before play
  • Main types: Carbon fibre brush, velvet brush, adhesive roller, stylus cleaner, cleaning fluid
  • Frequency: Brush before every side · roller every 5–10 plays · wet cleaning as required
  • Materials: Conductive carbon fibres, velvet/microvelour, medical-grade silicone, antistatic gel
  • Sonic benefit: Less crackle and pop · reduced groove and stylus wear · more stable tracking

THE CARE CATEGORIES

From dry dusting to deep cleaning

Each cleaning method addresses a different problem – and only develops its full effect in combination. A brief overview of the most important tools, found in the collections of experienced analogue enthusiasts:

01 · Carbon Fibre

Carbon Fibre Brushes

Millions of fine conductive carbon fibres penetrate the groove and simultaneously dissipate electrostatic charge. The classic for daily use before every play.

02 · Velvet

Velvet & Suede Brushes

Made from microfibre velvet; particularly gentle on delicate, older pressings. Ideal in combination with mild cleaning fluids for wet cleaning.

03 · Rollers

Adhesive / Silicone Rollers

Their tacky surface lifts even the finest dust that fibre brushes leave behind. Washable many times over, extremely durable – perfect for listening rooms with pets.

04 · Stylus

Stylus Cleaners & Gel

Without a clean stylus, the best record care is wasted. Gel pads lift dust off the tip contact-free; liquid cleaners address sticky residue.

05 · Liquid

Cleaning Fluids

Distilled, low-alcohol or enzymatic – depending on soiling and record age. Dissolves release-agent residue on new pressings and stubborn grime on used LPs.

06 · Supporting

Supporting Care Accessories

Antistatic cloths, tear-resistant HDPE inner sleeves, finger guards, storage boxes – small helpers with a major impact on longevity.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQ on record brushes, rollers & vinyl care

Do I really need a record brush, or is careful blowing enough?

Blowing removes loose surface particles, but often pushes finer dust deeper into the groove and adds moisture to the record. A carbon fibre brush mechanically lifts dust out of the groove, simultaneously dissipates electrostatic charge and prevents fresh dust from being re-attracted. For consistently clean sound and reduced stylus wear, a high-quality brush is therefore the foundation of any analogue care routine.

Carbon fibre or velvet – which brush is better for my collection?

Both types have different strengths. Carbon fibre brushes penetrate deep into the groove, dissipate static charge and are ideal for regular dry cleaning before every play. Velvet or suede brushes act more gently on the surface and develop their strength in combination with cleaning fluids for wet cleaning of older or more heavily soiled records. In practice the two types complement each other – the carbon brush for everyday use, the velvet brush for care sessions.

How do I use a record brush correctly?

Place the record on the spinning platter and set the brush onto the groove with light, even pressure. Hold the brush for about two to three full rotations in one position so that dust is picked up, then slowly lift it off toward the outer edge. Never drop it abruptly or clean against the direction of rotation. After use, clean the fibres with the protective slider or a soft surface to remove collected dust.

What is a record roller and what advantages does it offer over a brush?

A record roller – also called silicone or adhesive roller – has a tacky surface made of special silicone or elastomer that picks up even the finest dust particles that fibre brushes can leave behind in the groove. The roller is rolled over the record without pressure; residues are simply washed off under running water. It does not replace a brush but complements it excellently – especially in households with pets, candles or carpet flooring, where a lot of fine dust accumulates.

Can brushes and rollers rescue heavily soiled second-hand records?

Only to a limited extent. Dry cleaning with brush and roller removes dust and loose particles – for stubborn dirt, grease, nicotine deposits or release-agent residue (typical on new pressings), a wet cleaning with a suitable cleaning fluid and velvet brush or ideally a record cleaning machine is required. After deep cleaning, the brush and roller take over everyday care and keep the result stable long-term.

How often should I care for the stylus and turntable?

The stylus should ideally be cleaned briefly before each listening session – a gel pad is enough. With intensive use or after playing a dusty record, cleaning with a suitable liquid cleaner is advisable. A dirty stylus increases distortion, reduces resolution and accelerates groove wear. Records themselves benefit from a brush cleaning before every play; a full wet cleaning is recommended when first acquiring used or new records.

Is an antistatic gun or carbon brush clamp worthwhile as an addition?

Antistatic guns – for instance with a piezo element – work contact-free and complement a mechanical brush where residual charge remains on the record surface even after brushing. For climatically dry listening rooms or setups with sensitive pressings, they are a worthwhile investment. For normal use, a high-quality carbon fibre brush is usually sufficient.

Can I use the same brush for every record – or does it carry dirt across?

A well-maintained brush does not carry dirt onto the next record – the key is regular cleaning of the brush fibres. After each use, particles collected should be removed with the cleaning slider, a protective holder or by carefully stripping. Velvet brushes can occasionally be rinsed with distilled water during wet application. Adhesive rollers are fully washable under running water and regain their adhesion in the process.

Which care set do you recommend for beginners?

For a meaningful start, three components are sufficient: a carbon fibre brush for daily dry cleaning, a silicone adhesive roller for stubborn fine dust and a gel stylus cleaner for stylus care. These three tools already cover over 90 % of regular care needs and remain a solid foundation long-term. If you additionally collect second-hand records, you should add a cleaning fluid and a velvet brush for wet cleaning.

Vinyl accessories - Record cleaning

A record that has not been thoroughly cleaned can never reach its full potential. Dust, sand, grease deposits and embedded particles literally lie in the groove flanks - exactly where the needle tip scans its information. The result is crackling, noise and a sound that seems dull and limited, even though the record itself is actually flawless. This is exactly where the Milty Pro Permaclean Kit comes in: as a proven wet cleaning system that has been used in the hi-fi and broadcasting industry for decades and restores vinyl, CDs, DVDs and BluRays to new condition in a single operation.

At the heart of the system is the combination of a specially formulated aerosol cleaning fluid and the unique double-sided DuoPad. One side is made of fine velvet, which works the cleaning fluid into the groove structure and removes impurities from deep within the soundtrack. The reverse side is made of absorbent fabric - it completely absorbs the fluid together with the suspended dirt and leaves a dry, clean, residue-free surface. No dragging of dirty particles across the record, no film residue, no machine duty.

Universally applicable
Vinyl, CD, DVD and BluRay - one system for the entire media collection
Double-sided DuoPad
Velvet side dissolves, absorption side absorbs - two operations in a single pad
Without a machine
Professional cleaning without a cleaning machine - compact, fast, effective for home use
Mode of action & chemistry

The Permaclean fluid is a precisely formulated solvent that is applied evenly to the playing surface as a fine mist from the aerosol can. The formula penetrates capillary into the groove edges and suspends embedded particles - i.e. dust, sand, skin grease and organic residues that dry brushes simply cannot reach. Only when the contaminants are suspended in the fluid can the velvet pile of the DuoPad mechanically work them out of the groove without pushing them deeper into the flank.

The DuoPad's absorbent backing then takes over the crucial second step: it completely absorbs the fluid together with the loosened dirt. No residue remains on the surface that could be transferred to the tip of the needle during the next play and lead to a gradual deterioration of the sound. TechRadar confirmed in an independent test that fingerprint-covered CDs were read again without errors after treatment - and LPs were on a par with professionally cleaned copies in terms of sound quality.

Application step by step

The handling is deliberately kept uncomplicated: First, a short spray of Permaclean aerosol is applied directly to the playing surface - the nozzle ensures fine, even distribution without over-wetting. The velvet side of the DuoPad is then moved over the surface in a circular motion, ideally along the grooves on records. The fluid removes the impurities from the depths. In the third step, the pad is turned over: The absorption side wipes off the fluid and loosened dirt and dries the surface within seconds.

Once completely dry, the record or disc is ready for playback or safe storage. The DuoPad itself can be regenerated after drying with a soft brush and is ready for the next cleaning. A refill bottle (model MI0035M) is available separately - making the DuoPad a long-term investment in media care.

Areas of application & synergies

The Permaclean system covers the entire spectrum of optical media: Records of all sizes (7", 10", 12") benefit just as much as CDs, DVDs and BluRays. With digital disc formats, the cleaning removes fingerprints and streaks that cause drive read errors, image dropouts and sound dropouts - the laser can once again follow the data track unhindered. Especially with older CDs from the 1980s and 1990s, which suffer from frequent handling, Permaclean can make the difference between faulty and stable playback.

For optimum results, Milty recommends using the Permaclean kit in conjunction with the Milty Zerostat 3: The antistatic discharger neutralizes the electrostatic charge on the record surface, which can re-emerge after every cleaning and magnetically attracts dust from the air. If you are aiming for permanently noise-free sound, combine both products to create a complete care system - deep cleaning plus static discharge.
