Most cartridges are developed at the desk. The MoFi StudioTracker was designed from the end - from the cutting head of the mastering lathe. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, responsible for the most sonically sophisticated record reissues in the world for five decades, knows exactly how music is engraved into the groove of a lacquer master: with a cutting head whose two cutting coils are arranged in the characteristic V-shaped 45/45 angle - one for the left and one for the right channel. The StudioTracker mirrors exactly this geometry in the generator: two powerful, low-mass magnets, aligned in the same V-formation that drove the original groove into the record. Developed in collaboration with Allen Perkins, founder of Spiral Groove and designer of reference turntable systems up to 30,000 US dollars, the StudioTracker follows a design philosophy that is exceptional for products in this price range.
The result of this consistent development work - manufactured in Japan with audiophile precision - is an MM cartridge that punches well above its weight in terms of sound in its price class. Positive Feedback described the StudioTracker as a cartridge that behaves less like a typical moving magnet and more like a favorable moving coil: a closed, coherent sound image without the typical MM sharpness in the highs, with real musicality and a sense of rhythm that is not lost even with more demanding turntables. Construction & sound philosophy
Inside the StudioTracker, a moving magnet generator works according to the dual magnet principle: two low-mass magnets at the end of the needle carrier move between the fixed coils - precisely, with low inertia and with direct transmission of the groove movement into an electrical signal. The V-alignment of the magnets is not a decorative detail: it corresponds exactly to the angle at which the cutting coils of a mastering lath apply the groove - left at +45°, right at -45° to the record plane. A generator that imitates the physiognomy of the cutting head literally reads the information in the groove the way it came in.
The housing of the StudioTracker is made of a specially developed polymer with a proprietary damping material embedded inside. It reduces unwanted resonances in the headshell body that otherwise color the signal and cloud the high-frequency resolution. The elliptical diamond on the stylus carrier is the right compromise for its price class: more precise than a ball, with better high-frequency reproduction and a deeper penetration into the groove flanks - without the adjustment sensitivity of a fine-line cut. Positive result: The StudioTracker forgives slight geometrical inaccuracies during installation and works reliably and with a convincing sound even on turntables with medium adjustment quality.
What makes the StudioTracker stand out from the crowd in its price class is its sound: it is self-contained, musically coherent and rhythmically committed - qualities that one would expect more from moving coil systems than from an entry-level MM. The dynamics are strikingly lively without becoming shrill; the stage opens up with real width and a depth that often remains flat with other systems in this price range. The bass range is firm and contoured, the mid-range is present and rich in texture - and the treble is pleasantly smooth without losing precision. On a high-quality turntable such as the MoFi StudioDeck, the UltraDeck or a comparable turntable, the StudioTracker unfolds a potential that one would not readily expect from an entry-level pickup.
The high static compliance of 35 × 10-⁶ cm/dyne with a dynamic compliance of 8 × 10-⁶ cm/dyne makes the StudioTracker compatible with most medium to lighter tonearms - including MoFi's own tonearms. The recommended tracking force of 2.0 g is within a range that is both record-friendly and designed for optimum tracking performance.
