What is the difference between a record weight and a record clamp?

Both accessories share the same goal — securing the record as firmly and flatly as possible onto the platter — but they differ fundamentally in how they achieve it. A record weight (also called a record puck or stabilizer) simply sits on the spindle and uses its own mass to press the record down. Typical weights range from 200 to 800 grams. A record clamp, on the other hand, screws onto or grips the spindle mechanically, applying active pressure without necessarily adding significant mass. This makes clamps particularly well-suited for turntables with lighter motors or sensitive bearings, where a heavy weight would do more harm than good.

What sonic difference does a record weight or clamp actually make?

The effect is subtle but clearly audible on a high-quality system. The stylus should respond only to the movement of the groove — any external vibration that interferes directly costs sound quality. By improving the coupling between record and platter, resonances are damped: bass becomes more defined and reaches deeper, midrange clarity improves, and high-frequency resolution gains precision. There is also a speed stability benefit: the added mass increases the rotational inertia of the platter assembly, which can measurably reduce wow and flutter. Listeners with a revealing system will notice the difference clearly in a direct A/B comparison.

Is my turntable suitable for a record weight — or could it cause damage?

Compatibility depends primarily on the drive system and the bearing's load capacity. Direct-drive turntables with powerful motors — such as many Technics or Audio-Technica models — can typically handle moderate weights of up to around 400 grams without issue. Belt-drive turntables with quieter, lower-torque motors should be paired with significantly lighter weights, or a clamp should be preferred since it adds little extra mass. Special caution applies to turntables with suspended subchassis designs (such as Linn or classic Thorens models): a heavy weight can upset the carefully tuned suspension. When in doubt, consult the manufacturer's documentation or your specialist dealer.

Can record weights or clamps salvage warped records?

For slightly dished or mildly warped records, a weight or clamp can genuinely help: it presses the record centrally onto the platter and reduces the up-and-down movement of the groove during rotation — the stylus can track more steadily, and distortion caused by poor tracking decreases. Clamps are often even more effective here, as they apply tension outward from the centre, flattening the record more evenly across its surface. For severely warped records with pronounced waves or deformations, both accessories reach their limits — a dedicated record flattening device or professional treatment is the more appropriate solution.

How heavy should a record weight be — does more mass mean more benefit?

Not necessarily. The relationship between mass and sonic improvement is not linear. Lighter weights in the 200 to 400-gram range are the most sensible choice for the majority of belt-drive turntables — they improve coupling without stressing the motor or bearing. Heavier models above 600 grams can offer advantages on robust direct-drive turntables with bearings dimensioned accordingly, but they also increase wear on turntables not designed for that load. What matters is not the maximum possible weight, but the optimal weight for a given turntable. Many manufacturers — such as Pro-Ject or Clearaudio — tune their own weights and clamps specifically to the bearing load capacity of their models, making them a reliable first choice.

Which material is best for a record weight or clamp — aluminium, brass or stainless steel?

The choice of material influences both the resonant behaviour and the acoustic character of the accessory. Aluminium is lightweight, well-damped and the most widely used material — it resonates less at high frequencies and suits turntables with sensitive motors. Brass is considerably heavier and better suited to robust direct-drive decks; its rich sonic character is appreciated by many audiophiles. Stainless steel combines high mass with excellent corrosion resistance but can resonate more readily. Some manufacturers also use composite materials or POM (polyoxymethylene), an engineering plastic with outstanding damping properties. The key principle: the least resonant material is not automatically the best-sounding one — the interaction with platter mat, bearing and tonearm is what ultimately decides.

Weight or clamp — which is the better choice for my turntable?

The decision depends primarily on the type of turntable and personal listening priorities. A record weight is the simpler solution: place it on the spindle, no adjustment required, no thread to engage. It suits turntables with a powerful motor and a bearing dimensioned for additional load. A clamp offers the advantage of adjustable clamping pressure and places less strain on the bearing — ideal for sensitive belt-drive turntables or suspended designs. Those who mainly play 180-gram pressings on a solid direct-drive deck will be very well served by a well-chosen weight. Those who frequently play reissues on thinner vinyl, or who run a delicate belt-drive turntable, are better off long-term with a clamp. In either case: a quality product from an established manufacturer will always outperform a heavy no-name weight that burdens the bearing more than it benefits the sound.

Behind the MoFi Super Heavyweight is a technology that was originally developed for a completely different purpose: Michael Latvis, founder and chief engineer of Harmonic Resolution Systems (HRS), spent decades developing vibration isolation systems for military aircraft, commercial airliners and missile defense systems - applications where uncontrolled vibrations can have existential consequences. With six granted patents in the field of shock and vibration isolation, he founded HRS in 1999 and transferred this knowledge to the audiophile world. The collaboration with Mobile Fidelity is a logical connection: The company, which has been producing the world's most sonically sophisticated records for decades, combines its knowledge with that of one of the world's leading vibration specialists - in a platter weight that performs far better than any conventional record weight.

The decisive difference to the competition lies inside: While ordinary record weights dampen resonances through sheer mass at best, the Super Heavyweight acts as an active noise dissipation system. The vibrations generated during the scanning process - from the groove, the bearing and the motor - are conducted via the aluminum body to the inside of the weight, where the proprietary HRS polymer converts them into heat and thus permanently removes them from the audio path. The polymer on the underside of the weight creates a precise connection to the center mandrel that is gentle on the record and label. The result: a blacker background, more resolution in detail, firmer bass foundations and a liveliness in the mid-range that you have never heard before - on the same turntable, with the same record.

Why resonances steal the sound

As soon as the needle plunges into the groove, micro-vibrations occur - in the vinyl itself, on the platter, in the bearing and through the motor. These structural resonances overlay the useful signal and manifest themselves as an increased noise floor, washed-out transients, softened bass and a lack of immediacy in the sound image. Conventional record weights mechanically couple the record to the platter - they transfer mass but do not absorb energy. The HRS polymer in the Super Heavyweight goes one step further: it absorbs the vibrational energy and converts it into a tiny amount of heat instead of dissipating it into the platter or back into the record. This mechanism - known from missile defense and aviation - is the reason why the Super Heavyweight also works on turntables that are insensitive to pure mass weights or where too heavy a weight would strain the sub-chassis.

In terms of sound, this is noticeable in concrete, recordable improvements: Deep black backgrounds from which instruments emerge with sharper contours. Improved micro-details - the soft exhalation of the singer, the soundboard of the grand piano, the reverberant decay after the last chord. Firmer, contoured bass with more weight and definition. And a more three-dimensional sound stage, which only becomes fully visible thanks to the reduced noise floor.

Super Heavyweight vs. Champion - which one fits?

The choice between the two models follows a clear logic. The Super Heavyweight with its 368 grams is designed for sub-chassis turntables and turntables with light to medium-heavy platters - such as Pro-Ject, Rega, Thorens or MoFi's own models like the UltraDeck. Its weight is precisely calculated: Enough mass to reliably couple the record and effectively introduce resonances - but not so much that the motor, bearings or suspension of the sub-chassis are stressed. The billet-milled 6061 aluminum housing sits securely in the hand, while the soft polymer underside reliably protects labels from scratches.

At 495 grams, the Super Heavyweight Champion is the logical further development for audiophile mass turntables with heavy turntables weighing at least 2 kg - i.e. turntables such as Transrotor, SME, Clearaudio Concept or Thorens TD 1600. An ultra-dense, precision-molded HRS polymer is used here - a more complex formulation that is even more effective in terms of energy transfer and damping. The higher weight is a sonic benefit rather than a burden for massive platters: the platter is coupled more firmly and the resonance dissipation works with greater amplitude. Both models share the threadless universal design - simply attach and you're done.
