Turntable accessories - Cartridges
Nagaoka is no ordinary cartridge manufacturer - it is the world's largest producer of stylus diamonds. Numerous well-known brands in the industry source their styli from Higashine in northern Japan, where Nagaoka has been producing all core components entirely in-house for decades: from the precision-cut diamond to the stylus carrier and the generator unit. The Nagaoka MP-110 is the entry into this world - and it is remarkably convincing: a pickup with balanced tuning, elliptical diamond cut and a price/sound ratio that is hard to beat in its class.
The basis is Nagaoka's patented Moving-Permalloy principle - a further development of the classic Moving-Iron system. Instead of a magnet, a particularly light piece of permalloy (an alloy of nickel, iron and molybdenum with exceptionally high permeability) moves through a fixed coil array. The result is highly efficient signal generation with low moving mass - for a fast, precise response to even the finest groove modulations. The output voltage of 5 mV is fully MM-compatible: the system works with any standard phono input without additional effort.
Moving Permalloy technology
Low moving mass, high efficiency - the core is manufactured entirely in-house in Japan
Ideal for older collections
Elliptical cut tolerates dust and light scratches - robust and suitable for everyday use with used records
Interchangeable needle insert
Upgrade to MP-150, mono or shellac needle possible at any time - without a new body
The MP-110 sounds balanced and musical - without exaggerated emphasis on individual frequency ranges, without superimposed warmth, without analytical coldness. The treble range benefits directly from the elliptical cut: the diamond tip penetrates deeper into the groove than a spherical cut and thus extracts more information - detail resolution, spatial imaging and the reproduction of S-sounds and transients gain noticeably. The trade press and users unanimously describe the sound as lively and precise, with natural voices and a stable spatial image that significantly enhances even simpler turntables.
The MP-110 is particularly strong when dealing with older and used records: The elliptical cut is much more tolerant of minor dirt and superficial scratches than finer cuts such as Shibata or Microline. At the same time, the scanning behavior remains stable even with complex, dynamic passages and close to the inner edge of the plate - a sign of well-coordinated compliance and carefully calibrated needle compliance. The system can be used with medium-weight tonearms of modern and older turntables without any problems.
Installation of the MP-110 is extremely straightforward: The body has the standard ½" mounting dimension, the four connection pins are color-coded - a small but valuable detail that reliably eliminates confusion when wiring. The system comes with two different screw lengths and a small screwdriver so that even hard-to-reach headshells can be fitted without having to search for special tools. The needle insert can be removed from the front - without removing the pickup.
A major advantage of the MP system is that the needle insert is completely interchangeable. Anyone adding mono pressings or shellac records to their collection can use the same body with a suitable special stylus (available separately) - no new purchase, no realignment. For the next step in sound quality, the MP-150 is available, which combines the same generator body with a naked, unmounted diamond and thus achieves audibly higher resolution and spatial depth with the same basic tuning.
