The phono cartridge is the first and most critical link in the analogue playback chain. A tiny diamond stylus rides through the record groove, tracing minute modulations on both groove walls — modulations that contain the entire music signal. The cartridge converts these mechanical vibrations into an electrical voltage via an electromagnetic or electrodynamic principle, which is then amplified to line level by the phono preamplifier. Whatever the cartridge fails to extract from the groove cannot be reconstructed by any downstream component. That is why a quality cartridge — together with a good phono stage — is the single most effective upgrade for any turntable.

What types of phono cartridge are there — and how do they differ?

There are four common generator principles: MM (Moving Magnet), MC Low Output, MC High Output and MI (Moving Iron). They differ in which part is attached to the cantilever and moves — the magnet, the coil or an iron piece. How does the stylus profile influence the sound — and what types are there?

The stylus profile determines how precisely the diamond follows the delicate modulations of the record groove. It affects resolution, treble behaviour, inner-groove distortion and record wear. The general rule: the slimmer and more complex the profile, the more information is extracted from the groove — but the more demanding the alignment becomes and the higher the cost. What is compliance — and why does it need to match the tonearm?

Compliance describes how soft or stiff the cantilever suspension is, expressed in µm/mN (micrometres per millinewton). Together with the effective mass of the tonearm, the cartridge forms a spring-mass system with a resonant frequency. This resonance should ideally fall between 8 and 12 Hz — below the lowest musical frequencies but above typical disturbances caused by footfall and record warps. If the compliance does not match the arm, the result is either uncontrolled wobbling (high compliance on a heavy arm) or poor bass tracking (low compliance on a light arm). Rule of thumb: high compliance (above 20 µm/mN) pairs with lightweight tonearms, low compliance (below 15 µm/mN) with medium-mass and heavy arms.

Do I need a special phono preamplifier for an MC cartridge?

For low-output MC cartridges, yes. Their output voltage of 0.1 to 0.6 mV is far below the level of an MM system and requires significantly higher, yet extremely low-noise amplification. There are three routes: a dedicated MC phono preamplifier, a phono stage with a switchable MM/MC input, or a passive MC step-up transformer before an MM input. High-output MC cartridges sidestep this issue — their output is sufficient for a standard MM input at 47 kΩ, making them an ideal entry point into the MC world. MI systems are just as uncomplicated as MM in this regard.

What does load impedance mean — and why is it so important for MC cartridges?

The load impedance is the resistance that the phono preamplifier presents to the cartridge. For MM systems the standard is 47 kΩ — here the challenge lies more in the correct input capacitance (pF), which depends heavily on the phono cable and the stage itself. Too much capacitance creates an unpleasant treble peak; too little produces a dull sound. For MC cartridges the optimal load resistance is manufacturer-specific and typically lies between 20 and 1,000 ohms. Does 180g or 200g vinyl really sound better — yes or no?

Advantages of 180g / 200g:

Greater mass means greater rotational inertia on the platter — the record couples mechanically more stably, external vibrations (footfall, motor noise) are better damped. Heavier vinyl is also dimensionally more stable: it warps and buckles less readily under heat and pressure than thin standard vinyl. Additionally, more material during pressing allows a deeper, more even groove geometry with more precise pressure distribution. When the record is pressed from high-quality virgin vinyl (pure PVC without recycled content) — which is more common with 180g/200g pressings — the inherent noise of the material is measurably lower. On a high-quality system, this manifests as a blacker background and a clearer, quieter sound.

Disadvantages and limitations:

Weight alone says nothing about sound quality. A poorly mastered 180g pressing will sound worse than a carefully mastered 140g original pressing from the 1970s — guaranteed. By far the greatest influence on the sound of a record is the mastering, followed by the pressing plant and the vinyl compound used. A further critical point: thick vinyl is less forgiving of irregularities in the pressing process — and quality control at mass-market 180g pressings is often no better than for 140g product. This has led to many affordable "180g reissues" from large factories proving sonically disappointing despite their weight. The sonic superiority of 180g/200g reliably unfolds only when mastering, pressing plant and material are all at the highest level simultaneously — as is the case at specialists such as Quality Record Pressings (QRP), Pallas or RTI. How should vinyl be stored correctly?

The absolute rule: records always stand upright, never lying flat. Lying records warp under the weight of stacked discs — a process that can begin within weeks depending on temperature and load. The optimal storage temperature is 15–20°C, humidity 45–55%. Direct sunlight and heat sources (radiators, amplifiers) are the most dangerous enemies — PVC begins to soften and permanently deforms from around 40°C. The record should always be in its inner sleeve before being slid into the outer sleeve or cover — never store directly in the cover without an inner sleeve, as paper contains abrasive particles and draws moisture. Outer protective sleeves (polyethylene or PP) protect the cover and reduce static charge from outside. And after playing: return the record to its sleeve immediately — every minute left open on the platter is a minute in which dust from the air settles on the groove surface.
