The platter support is the most direct point of contact between the vinyl and the playback system - and therefore one of the most effective, yet most frequently underestimated influencing variables in the entire analog chain. What happens between the platter and the LP largely determines how much of the unavoidable vibrations - from the bearing, motor, loudspeaker feedback and the needle itself - reach the groove as an interference signal. The Origin Live Strata Mat from Southampton, England, is the most consistent attempt to solve this problem completely: not for one frequency range, but for the entire spectrum.

Mark Baker, founder of Origin Live and one of the most renowned British turntable developers for over three decades, says he has tested hundreds of material combinations - felt, cork, carbon, glass, rubber, graphite, Kevlar, leather, acrylic and many more. No single substance solved the problem universally. His conclusion: each individual material only damps effectively in a narrow frequency band, while neglecting or even coloring other areas. The solution had to be different - and it is at the heart of the Strata.

The Strata is constructed from three layers, the exact materials of which Origin Live does not disclose for obvious commercial reasons. What is known is that the layers are semi-bonded - not fully glued, but joined together using a flexible bonding technique that allows controlled interaction between the layers. This partial bonding is crucial: it creates a phase difference between the layers, through which vibrations are not simply passed on, but actively canceled out by destructive interference. Each layer is designed for a different frequency range - their combination results in a broadband attenuation that no single material alone can achieve.

Two design details deserve special attention. Firstly, the mat is minimally smaller than an LP so that the outer edge of the record - which is usually pressed a little thicker - protrudes freely. The mat therefore supports the groove area exactly where it counts. Secondly, the center remains free - no pressure on the label, no deformation from the platter center spike. If you want to further sharpen the sound image, you can optionally combine the Strata with the Origin Live Gravity One plate weight - in tests, this combination proved to be synergistically superior without compromising the free and open sound image of the mat.

Almost all testers noticed that the Strata offers an unusual haptic experience: it is significantly lighter than expected and sounds almost resonance-free when tapped with a fingernail - a strange, almost "absorbing black hole"-like quality, as one Stereonet reviewer described it. This acoustic inertness is no coincidence, but the result of years of development.

The British trade press reacted unanimously positively: The Ear awarded it Best Buy, Stereonet spoke of an indispensable listening experience, Hi-Fi+ tested the mat on five different turntables - Linn LP12, Gold Note T5, Rega Planar 10, Clearaudio Performance DC and an audiophile's own reference - and attested to its remarkable consistency across all turntable materials: Lexan, glass, ceramic, POM and aluminum alloys.

In terms of sound, the tests are unanimous: a quieter background with more dynamics and stage presence. Transient response improves - percussion seems more sharply defined, guitar strums have more body and reverberation, vocals gain in intelligibility. Particularly noticeable: LPs that previously sounded slightly aggressive or tiring seem more relaxed and fluid with the Strata, without losing resolution or energy. The tonal balance remains completely neutral - the Strata does not color, it cleans.

The Strata is 5 mm thick - significantly thicker than typical standard mats (usually 1.5-2 mm). If you change from a 2 mm felt mat, you will have to adjust the height of your tonearm by approx. 3 mm to achieve the correct VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle). The Strata is therefore only suitable for turntables with a height-adjustable tonearm. If you are unable to carry out this step, you should refrain from buying it - the mechanically incorrect installation position would negate the sonic benefits.

The old mat must be completely removed - it must not remain under or on top of the Strata. A slight eccentricity of the mat on the platter is unproblematic due to the design and does not affect the sound. Regular dry brushing is sufficient for maintenance; when not in use, the mat should be stored flat to avoid deformation.
