A turntable setup can be heard - but not always judged with certainty. Whether the tracking force is really right, the anti-skating works correctly, both channels are cleanly separated and correctly polarized and the frequency response of the system has no hidden weaknesses: All of this can only be tested with the right tools. The Ortofon Stereo Test Record is exactly this tool - a new 180 g fine pressing from one of the oldest and most respected cartridge manufacturers in the world, designed for use in the home listening room with your own system.
Ortofon, founded in Copenhagen in 1918 and thus one of the oldest manufacturers of cartridge technology, developed the test signals on this record itself - from a deep understanding of what a cartridge, a tonearm and a turntable have to achieve together and how their interaction can be made sonically visible. The result is a compact but complete test record with 15 tracks per side, covering four clearly distinguishable test areas.

Tracks 1-4 - frequency response analysis
The first four tracks each contain a logarithmic frequency sweep from 800 Hz to 50 kHz - tracks 1 and 3 for the left channel, tracks 2 and 4 for the right channel. The recording uses a linear cut without RIAA correction with constant velocity amplitude: this means that the record itself carries the signal linearly recorded, while the equalization is completely taken over by the RIAA stage of the own system - exactly as any music record is played back. The tolerance range is ±1.5 dB in the 800-20,000 Hz range.
The frequency response sweep can be used to detect several influencing variables. Cable capacitance in the tonearm cable system can cause an early drop in high frequencies. Incorrect tracking force changes the resonance characteristics of the pickup and thus its frequency response. Wear on the stylus or bearings often manifests itself as frequency response asymmetry. Even anti-skating errors can lead to channel-dependent deviations. If you can hear the sweep running cleanly and evenly through the system via both channels, you have confirmed a well-adjusted system.
Tracks 5-8 - Reference tone & channel check
Tracks 5 to 8 provide a 1000 Hz reference tone at 5 cm/s rms, alternating between the left and right channels. This standard tone is the starting point for several important checks: Whether the left channel really arrives at the speaker on the left and the right on the right; whether the speakers are connected in phase; whether the channel balance is correct; and whether the turntable maintains exactly the right speed - a frequency meter or tuning fork app is sufficient as a reference.
Tracks 9-14 - Sampling capacity
Six tracks with a 315 Hz signal with increasing lateral excursions of 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 micrometers: this is the hardest part of the test record - and the most revealing. Each cartridge has a tracking ability value in the data sheet, which is specified in micrometers. The cartridge should be able to track the corresponding track without distortion to this value. If distortion occurs, this is audible as a shift away from the pure tone or as fluttering and skipping.
The channel comparison is of particular diagnostic value: if one of the channels distorts earlier than the other, this is a clear indication of faulty anti-skating. The skating force pulls the tonearm inwards, putting more strain on one side of the groove - correct anti-skating keeps this force in balance. If both channels fail at the same time, the support weight should be increased gradually until no further improvement can be achieved. Note: The 90 and 100 µm tracks are extreme load tests - most cartridges in normal operation do not play up to 100 µm at 1.5-2.5 g.
Track 15 - Square wave for oscilloscope
The last track contains a square wave with a period of 2.7 ms and a duty cycle of 3:7 - a professional tool for anyone who has an oscilloscope to hand. A correctly connected, correctly phased and correctly adjusted pickup reproduces the square wave in such a way that both channels are exactly superimposed on the screen. Deviations indicate wiring errors, phase shifts or azimuth problems in the headshell assembly. Without an oscilloscope, this track can be skipped - the other 14 already provide a complete picture of the setup status.
