Hi-Fi Accessories · Turntable Setup

A turntable is only as good as the precision with which it is set up — and few adjustments are as routinely underestimated as the simple question of whether the deck truly sits perfectly level. If the chassis tilts by even a fraction of a degree, the balance of forces at the tonearm shifts: anti-skating no longer works cleanly, tracking force distributes unevenly across the two groove walls, and the stylus begins to work against gravity rather than with it. The Ortofon Premium Libelle eliminates precisely this source of error — with an accuracy that goes far beyond what a simple hardware-store spirit level can offer.

The Premium Libelle offers a full 360-degree level overview with one-degree accuracy, turning the exact levelling of your deck into a matter of seconds. Rather than having to check two axes one after another, the circular bull's-eye level captures every direction of tilt simultaneously — the bubble drifts towards wherever the chassis dips, indicating both the magnitude and the direction of the deviation at once. It is crafted from anodised aluminium in a sophisticated matte-black finish that echoes Ortofon's unmistakable design language. Each unit is individually tested before shipping to ensure measurement accuracy and consistent performance.

Why Levelling Matters

Horizontal alignment is the first and most fundamental step of any tonearm setup — it comes before tracking force, overhang, azimuth and VTA. The reason is physical: the tonearm balances on a fine bearing, and its entire geometry is calculated around a precisely horizontal reference plane. If the deck tilts sideways, the azimuth tilts with it — the angle at which the stylus sits in the groove. Even a slight deviation makes the two stereo channels play at different levels and blurs the spatial imaging. A lengthwise tilt, in turn, distorts the vertical tracking angle and with it the tonal character of the playback.

Then there is anti-skating: this counter-force is meant to offset the inward pull exerted by the rotating platter. It is calibrated precisely for a level setup. If the deck sits askew, the downhill slope force either adds to or works against the skating force — and the stylus presses unevenly against one groove wall. The result is distortion, an unbalanced sound and, over time, one-sided, irreversible wear on both stylus and record. A precise level is therefore not merely an accessory but active protection for your valuable collection.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Where many levels are made of lightweight plastic, Ortofon opts for a solid body of anodised aluminium. That brings a tangible benefit: the inherent weight keeps the level stable and slip-free on the surface, while the finely worked wave-pattern texture provides a secure, controlled grip during positioning. The anodised layer is not only visually refined but also durably scratch- and corrosion-resistant — a tool that retains both its precision and its appearance over many years.

The name “Libelle” is no coincidence: in German the word denotes both the dragonfly and — as a technical term — the liquid-filled glass vial of a spirit level. Ortofon, based in Denmark since 1918 and one of the most storied names in analogue playback, draws on decades of experience in precision setup tools with this device — from cartridges to alignment protractors to tracking-force gauges.

In Use

Use could not be simpler: place the Premium Libelle centrally on the platter — ideally without a mat, directly on the flat platter surface — or on the chassis. The centred air bubble immediately reveals whether the deck sits perfectly level. If the bubble drifts off-centre, adjust the levelling feet until it rests exactly at the centre of the ring. Because the level reads in all directions, a single pass is enough — no awkward turning and re-placing as with a linear spirit level.

A correctly levelled system reveals its full value in concert with the rest of your care and setup. A record brush removes dust before playback, a stylus brush keeps the contact point between diamond and groove clean, and a record weight or clamp damps unwanted resonances in the vinyl. On a precisely level foundation, all these measures finally work together at their best — the result is stable, focused and tonally refined reproduction.
