CD player - Hybrid - Tube technology

There are devices that simply play music - and those that turn it into an experience. The Pier Audio CD-880SE unmistakably belongs to the second category. With this top loader, the French manufacturer has developed a CD player that consistently refuses to choose between analog warmth and digital precision: It combines both worlds in a single, solid aluminum housing - and lets the listener decide which sound philosophy should reign that evening.

At its heart is a deliberately chosen concept of three outputs: two analog RCA pairs - one with a tube output stage (12AU7), one with a transistor circuit - as well as a digital coaxial output for external DACs. Both analog stages work simultaneously, so that A/B comparisons can be made directly on the amplifier, without having to plug in or switch. This is not a gimmick, but audiophile philosophy in its purest form: Pier Audio does not give the decision away to a switch - it ends up with the listener.

Drive & mechanics

Pier Audio's decision to use a top loader is not a nostalgic gesture - it is an engineering consequence. While the design of a conventional CD drawer involves play, mechanical noise and vibration risks, the top loader eliminates this entire error vector. The CD is inserted from above and fixed precisely to the spindle motor by a magnetic puck - no springy plastic mechanisms, no rattling. Thanks to its magnetization, the puck even sticks to the steel housing so that it simply cannot get lost in everyday use.

The built-in Sanyo drive is specialized in the pure playback of audio CDs according to the Red Book standard - no SACD, no Blu-ray audio, but consistent optimization for exactly one task: the error-free, precise reading of the digital data stream with a constant data rate of around 1,500 kbit/s. The rotation speed varies automatically. The rotation speed varies automatically depending on the pickup position - faster on the inside, slower on the outside - which minimizes mechanical stress and ensures practically inaudible operating noise in the test. In a device class where drive quality has a direct impact on the jitter performance of the converter, this is an advantage that should not be underestimated.

DAC & signal processing

For digital-to-analog conversion, Pier Audio relies on the Cirrus Logic CS4392 - a chip chosen by the developers for clear sonic reasons. The CS4392 is a 24-bit/192 kHz-capable stereo DAC with fifth-order delta-sigma conversion, linear-phase design and selectable interpolation filters. Crucially, it operates in the CD-880SE in the native 44.1 kHz/16-bit mode of the Red Book standard - without forced upsampling that could introduce digital artifacts. What counts is the high-quality signal routing after the converter, not high numbers for marketing purposes.

The CS4392 is known for its exceptional differential linearity - no distortion due to resistance tolerance errors, no long-term or temperature drift of the linearity, high robustness against clock jitter. These properties make it the preferred converter component, especially in the audiophile environment - and explain why Pier Audio has chosen it over a more modern but less carefully characterized chip.

Tube vs. transistor - two output stages, one decision

The 12AU7 double triode in the tube output stage is not a fig leaf, but the conceptual heart of the CD-880SE. Tubes produce harmonic distortion of predominantly even order - an effect that the human ear perceives not as a flaw, but as fullness and naturalness. Voices are given body, string instruments silkiness, stage images gain depth. For listeners who traditionally find CDs too analytical or cool, this output is the direct bridge to the warmth of the analog world.

The transistor output stage, on the other hand, delivers a clearly contoured, neutrally balanced sound image - precise in the depth graduation, tight in the bass, objective in the transient reproduction. Which output stage comes out on top depends on the recording material: Stereoplay (08/2023) put it in a nutshell - the CD-880SE basically contains two different sounding CD players, which are alternately the better choice depending on the music. As both outputs are active at the same time, this comparison can be made in real time - without interrupting the flow of the music.

Housing & workmanship

With a total weight of 10 kg and a solid aluminum housing, the CD-880SE is physically closer to a small safe than to a typical consumer CD player. This mass is by design: a heavy, rigid housing suppresses structural resonances that can creep into the DAC clock via the drive and color the analog output. Pier Audio also pays careful attention to the power supply - a clean, low-interference power supply is not a matter of course for hybrid devices with a tube component, but a prerequisite for a smooth sound foundation.

The aluminum remote control is cool and comfortable to hold, all functions including two-digit track input are directly accessible. The top loading flap opens and closes manually - quickly, without waiting time and without the background noise of a motorized drawer. Anyone who frequently changes windows will appreciate this operation after just a few minutes.

Awards & press

In November 2020, the French trade magazine Diapason awarded the CD-880SE the Diapason d'Or - one of the most prestigious audiophile awards in France. The editors' verdict was enthusiastic: exceptional musicality for this price range, a bass with live character, a completely open and airy stage. The German specialist media followed suit: Stereoplay (08/2023) described it as a top CD player that plays at the very top and remains reasonably priced - a rarely clear conclusion for a device in this price range. The HiFi IFAs concluded with the verdict that the CD-880SE proves that the classic CD player is far from being a thing of the past.
