Records warp. Sometimes this is due to incorrect storage over the years, sometimes they come from the factory as they are - even with expensive new editions, warping is no longer a rarity. What this means for the sound is more serious than most people realize: A wavy record literally destroys any adjustment of the cartridge, no matter how meticulous - tracking force, VTA, azimuth, anti-skating - all of this changes constantly during tracking, with every wave, at every point in the groove. Under these conditions, the cartridge cannot even begin to develop its potential.

The treble beat - and what it really does
A treble bump - i.e. a wave or warping of the record - initially sounds like a cosmetic problem. In reality, it is an acoustic problem. When the stylus runs over a wavy record, the effective immersion depth of the stylus tip into the groove changes with every rise and fall. This sounds abstract, but it has very concrete consequences: The VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle), i.e. the vertical tracking angle, fluctuates permanently. The azimuth loses its alignment. The actual tracking force deviates from the set one. The anti-skating is ineffective. All parameters that have been optimized with sensitive adjustment are constantly counteracted by the mechanics of the plate shaft - often several times per revolution.
This can be heard as a slight blurring of the sound image, a loss of spatiality and coherence, an unsteady bass response or limited high-frequency resolution. Severe warping results in synchronization fluctuations, distortion or even needle skipping. Particularly painful: This doesn't just affect old flea market finds. Even fresh 180 gram pressings from renowned labels nowadays often come out of the box with treble bounce - a structural problem of modern record production that is affecting more and more buyers.
Ironing - how it works and why precision is crucial
Records are made of rigid PVC, which only reaches its glass transition point at approx. 79 °C - in other words, it changes into a viscous, malleable state. The AFI flat.2 works with a maximum temperature of 59 °C in the standard program, i.e. well below this threshold. So how is it possible for the shaft to smooth out without damaging the groove structure? The key lies not in the temperature, but in the duration and uniformity of the heat treatment.
Vinyl behaves thermally like a so-called "supercooled melt" - the material is rigid, but the long polymolecule chains are frozen in a state of tension that originates from the pressing process. If the material is heated slowly and evenly, these chains gain enough mobility to realign themselves - the sheet yields and aligns itself flat without the groove being changed. Microscopic examinations after the ironing process prove this: The groove structure remains completely intact.
Temperature homogeneity is crucial for this result: every part of the record - inside, outside, top and bottom - must have exactly the same temperature at all times. The AFI flat.2 achieves a deviation of less than ±0.25 K over the entire surface of the record. Every appliance delivered is personally tested by the developer using a test plate and 17 embedded temperature sensors. An oven, a sandwich maker or a steam iron cannot do this - and in the worst case can irreversibly damage the groove or permanently deform the vinyl.
The cooling process is just as important as the heating process. If a record is cooled too quickly, the stresses immediately freeze again - the result is unsatisfactory, the record remains wavy or develops new warping. The AFI flat.2 therefore cools down very slowly, in a controlled and regulated manner - the entire process takes up to four hours. This is not impatience, this is physics.
Tempering - the sound gain that surprises
Tempering is like many great discoveries: It was an accidental finding. The developers of the AFI flat.2 originally built a record iron - and when comparing the sound of ironed and unironed records, they were amazed to discover that the treated records not only sounded flat, but also better. This moment was the starting signal for over a year of further development work, in which optimum temperature curves and holding times were determined for a targeted improvement in sound.
What happens physically? Records are pressed at approx. 150 °C - a process that only takes around 30 seconds. They are then quickly cooled with water, stacked on spindles and weighted down with metal plates. This brutal thermodynamic process - 150 degrees to around 20 degrees within minutes - leaves its mark: the long PVC and polyvinyl acetate molecular chains have no time to align themselves in an orderly fashion. The material stresses are literally frozen. And you can hear them.
Annealing reverses this process in a controlled manner: the plate is slowly heated to a plateau temperature, held there and then cooled very slowly and in a fully controlled manner. The molecular chains can relax and transfer to a more energetically favorable state. The result is a material with a higher crystalline content - measurably harder, more abrasion-resistant and mechanically more stable than before. The groove flanks guide the diamond needle more precisely. The background noise of the record is demonstrably reduced - measurements have shown improvements of around 3 decibels in the signal-to-noise ratio. This is a considerable gain for the record medium, which already has a limited dynamic range.
In terms of sound, independent testers and music magazines consistently describe the result: less background noise, more spatial and tangible imaging, more flow and naturalness in the sound - a more relaxed listening experience in every respect. The tempering result is permanent, provided the record is stored properly. Important: Ironing and tempering are two different processes. An ironed record is flat - but only an annealed record is also optimized in terms of sound. Our service combines both.

What we do for your record:
1. professional record washing with the Clearaudio Double Matrix Sonic - one of the most renowned wet washing machines in the audiophile sector. Dust, fingerprints, grease and microparticles in the grooves are completely removed. A clean record is a prerequisite for optimum brushing results - impurities in the vinyl can lead to undesirable reactions during heat treatment.
2nd treatment in the AFI flat.2 over a period of up to 4 hours. We select the optimum parameters for the temperature, holding time and cooling curve depending on the condition of the panel and the severity of the bump. If the result is not completely satisfactory after the first run, we will carry out a second treatment with adjusted parameters free of charge.
3. visual inspection and quality check after the process - we check the result and document it if there are any abnormalities.
4. new coated inner cover - each treated panel receives a fresh, antistatic inner cover after the service to maintain the quality of the result in the long term.
Important notes before sending in
Please do not send in severely deformed records where the vinyl is already twisted or broken within itself. The process is designed for panels that are outside the production tolerances - i.e. for bumps, waves and slight warping. Even with the AFI flat.2, extreme deformations cannot be guaranteed to be repaired.
Picture discs are not suitable for the process as they consist of laminated layers that can split under heat. Please do not send in these records.
We work with the utmost care and the best available equipment. Nevertheless, we accept no liability for records sent in. The process is extremely gentle and damage to the vinyl is practically impossible under normal circumstances - but it cannot be completely ruled out.
Please allow a waiting time of 2 to 4 weeks. As each treatment takes up to four hours and our service is in high demand, there are usually several records in the queue.

Frequently asked questions - Ironing & tempering records
My new record has a treble bump - is that normal?
Unfortunately, yes - and the problem is increasing. Modern pressing plants are under enormous production pressure and the cooling times after the pressing process are often kept too short. The result: even high-priced 180 gram new editions from renowned labels come out of the box with a high impact. This is not an isolated case, but a structural problem of today's vinyl production. A complaint to the retailer is possible, but the replacement is often no better - same pressing plant, same batch. Our pressing service is the more reliable solution in such cases.
Is the groove damaged by ironing?
No - that is the key difference between the AFI flat.2 and improper home attempts. The device operates at a maximum temperature of 59 °C, well below the glass transition point of rigid PVC (approx. 79 °C), at which the material actually becomes malleable. The smoothing of the corrugation is not forced by heat, but by the very slow, uniform heating over the entire sheet surface - the frozen material stresses are released and the vinyl aligns itself flat. Microscopic examinations of the groove structure before and after the ironing process show no changes whatsoever.
What is the difference between ironing and tempering?
Ironing and tempering are two different processes, even if the device is the same. Ironing is the targeted flattening of a curved record - the aim is a geometrically flat record that can be played without any problems. Annealing, on the other hand, is a thermal relaxation of the material: the record is slowly heated to a plateau temperature, held there and then cooled down in a very controlled manner. This process positively changes the molecular structure of the vinyl - the material stresses from the pressing process are permanently dissolved and the surface becomes harder and more abrasion-resistant. The result is measurable and audible in terms of sound. Important: An ironed record is flat, but not automatically annealed. Our service carries out both processes in one treatment.
Does a tempered record really sound better - or is it my imagination?
This is the most frequently asked question - and the answer is: it is measurable, not just audible. Independent tests with reference records show a reduction in background noise of around 3 decibels after tempering. Given the already limited dynamic range of the record medium, this is a significant gain. The physical explanation: tempering increases the crystalline content in the vinyl, the groove edges become harder and guide the diamond needle more precisely. Fewer microphonic effects, less scanning noise, cleaner transfer of groove movements. In terms of sound, testers and the trade press consistently describe the result as quieter, more spacious, more natural and more musical - and the effect also occurs with visually flawless records that have never been curled.
Is tempering also worthwhile for flat, new records?
Yes - and that is the most surprising aspect of the whole process. Material stresses from the pressing process are present in practically every new release, regardless of whether the sheet is flat or not. They are caused by the rapid, uneven cooling after pressing and are frozen in the vinyl - invisible, but relevant to the sound. The temper effect is particularly noticeable with fresh pressings: The newer the vinyl, the softer the surface, the greater the gain due to the hardening of the groove edges. Older records have partially hardened themselves over the decades, which is why some vinyl veterans observe that old first pressings often sound better than modern reissues - an effect that tempering specifically reproduces.
Can I temper a record myself at home?
Technically possible, practically risky. DIY methods using ovens, sandwich makers or steam irons fail due to one central problem: the lack of temperature homogeneity. Vinyl reacts to temperature differences of just a few degrees with different behavior - one side can flatten while the other warps, or the groove structure is damaged by local overheating. In addition, home solutions lack the controlled cooling that is crucial for a lasting result. At best, the result is unsatisfactory; at worst, the panel is permanently damaged. The AFI flat.2 maintains a temperature deviation of less than ±0.25 K over the entire panel surface - no domestic appliance can achieve this.
Is the result permanent - or does the plate warp again?
The ironing and tempering result is permanent, provided the record is stored properly. Records should always be stored upright, in a well-fitting inner sleeve and without excessive lateral pressure - never stacked horizontally, never near heat sources or in direct sunlight. If these conditions are met, the treated record will remain flat and its sound will be optimized. We give each treated record a new coated inner sleeve, which has an antistatic effect and offers mechanical protection - a simple but important contribution to the durability of the result.
Which plates are not suitable for the service?
Please do not send any picture discs - these consist of laminated layers that can split under heat. Shellac plates (78 rpm) are also not suitable as they have a different material behavior and would require a significantly lower treatment temperature. We also cannot guarantee that we can treat records that are already severely deformed - i.e. twisted, broken or extremely deformed. The process is designed for bumps and warping that are outside the production tolerances, not for mechanically damaged vinyl. If in doubt, write to us shortly before sending it in - we will be happy to help you with the assessment.
Why does it take 2 to 4 weeks?
Each individual treatment takes up to four hours - this is not a decision we make, but a physical necessity of the process. Cooling down faster means a poorer result. What's more, our service is in high demand and there are usually several plates in the queue. We process each order in the order in which it is received and inform you as soon as your plate is ready. The waiting time is the price you pay for a result that really works.
What happens if the ironing does not produce the desired result?
If the result is not completely satisfactory after the first run, we will carry out a second treatment with adjusted parameters - at no extra charge. Some plates, especially those with long-standing, deep warping or from certain pressing plants (e.g. older US presses), require a second or even third run with a modified temperature and holding time. In this case, we will inform you transparently about the result and the next steps. If a record is not flat despite repeated treatment, we will refund the service price - we will not charge for a record that we cannot save.
