How is the Analogis Clean 'n' Play different from an ordinary cleaning cassette?

Conventional cleaning cassettes simply pull a coarse fleece strip past the tape head surface — the pinch roller and capstan shaft remain untreated. The fleece itself becomes saturated with dirt after just a few uses, rendering the entire cassette useless. The Analogis Clean 'n' Play works on a fundamentally different principle: an intelligent internal mechanism with soft cleaning felts reaches the tape head, pinch roller and capstan shaft in a single Play cycle. Because the felts are replaceable, the cassette itself remains usable indefinitely.

How often should I clean my cassette deck?

A good rule of thumb is every 20 to 30 hours of use. With intensive use, older tapes, or high-oxide-shedding cassettes, a shorter interval is advisable. Early signs that cleaning is needed include a reduction in treble clarity or slight wow-and-flutter — both pointing to deposits on the tape head or pinch roller.

Is the Clean 'n' Play compatible with my cassette deck?

The Clean 'n' Play is a Type I cassette in the standard Compact Cassette format (100 × 64 × 12 mm), making it compatible with virtually all cassette decks and recorders produced over the past five decades — regardless of whether they use single or dual-capstan tape transport. In dual-capstan decks, the mechanism ensures both drive shafts are cleaned.

How do I use the cleaning cassette correctly?

It could not be simpler: dampen the soft cleaning felts inside the cassette with a few drops of the included cleaning fluid. Insert the cassette into the deck and press Play. After a few seconds, cleaning is complete. The fluid evaporates without residue — no wiping or drying is required afterwards.

How long does the cleaning cassette last and when should the felts be replaced?

The cassette itself lasts indefinitely. The cleaning felts will visibly discolour with use — at that point, simply replace them with the spare felts included in the package. When those run out, replacement fluid (20 ml, Art. 6243) is available separately. Compared to single-use cleaning cassettes, the Clean 'n' Play is a significantly more sustainable and cost-effective solution.

Can the cleaning cassette damage my deck's delicate tape heads?

No — this is precisely the key advantage of felt technology over coarse fleece. The soft felts contact the tape head surfaces with minimal, even pressure, causing no scratching or abrasion. The included fluid is specifically formulated for this application and will not attack head materials or the sensitive rubber compound of the pinch roller.

What improvements can I expect after cleaning?

A clean tape head surface reduces the effective gap between head and tape — translating directly into improved treble resolution, greater transparency and stronger output level. A clean pinch roller ensures more stable tape transport: wow-and-flutter noticeably decreases, and bass lines sound tighter and more controlled. In decks that have not been cleaned for some time, the difference is often striking.

Does the Clean 'n' Play also demagnetise the tape head?

No — cleaning and demagnetisation are two separate processes. The Clean 'n' Play removes physical deposits (oxide particles, dust, residue) but has no effect on the residual magnetism that builds up in the tape head after approximately 30–50 hours of use. This residual magnetism is a normal physical phenomenon and can irreversibly damage the high-frequency content recorded on tapes — it should be addressed with a separate head demagnetiser. The ideal maintenance routine combines regular cleaning with the Clean 'n' Play and periodic demagnetisation.
