Test Programme & Band Structure
The record is built around a twelve-band test programme mirrored across both sides — bands 1 to 8 on side A, bands 9 to 12 continuing on side B. Each measurement sequence begins with a 1 kHz start tone (10 seconds), followed by the frequency sweep itself (50 seconds) and a silent reference phase with no modulation (30 seconds). This three-stage format ensures a clean level reference point before every sweep measurement.
The four sweep bands cover all clinically relevant scenarios in a systematic order. Bands 1/9 test the left channel in isolation, bands 2/10 the right — ideal for detecting channel-specific frequency response deviations caused by uneven stylus compliance or a laterally tilted cartridge. Bands 3/11 transmit the signal in-phase to both channels (L+R), simulating full mono output and assessing overall system linearity under load. The analytically most valuable band is 4/12: the out-of-phase stereo test (L−R) excites the stylus vertically rather than laterally, exposing crosstalk, phase errors and azimuth weaknesses that remain invisible during normal music playback.
The programme is completed by four 1 kHz level reference tones (bands 5–8) — one each for left channel, right channel, stereo in-phase and stereo out-of-phase, each lasting 10 seconds followed by 2 seconds of silence. These bands provide the calibration anchor for external measurement amplifiers or analysis software and are indispensable for anyone measuring digitally.
In practice, the Clearaudio Frequency Response Test Record works on two levels: purely by ear — and in combination with measurement equipment. Anyone connecting a PC or Mac running REW (Room EQ Wizard) or similar analysis software to their phono input can visualise their cartridge's frequency response as a curve and compare it directly against the reference. Deviations of ±3 dB or more, which are common in poorly set-up systems, become immediately apparent.
