Dust is the silent adversary of every vinyl enthusiast. Every time the stylus traces the groove, vinyl and diamond tip rub against each other electrostatically — the record builds up charge, attracts airborne dust, and forces the cartridge to work its way through a fine layer of microparticles. The consequences: avoidable crackle, dulled high frequencies and, over time, noticeably faster wear of the delicate diamond tip. The Dynavox Record Cleaning Arm tackles this weak point head-on: it cleans continuously during playback, safely drains static charge to ground, and spares the cartridge work it should never have to do.
At the heart of the design sits a slender aluminium arm carrying a fine carbon fibre brush head, supported on a needle-pivoted stainless-steel base. The combination is no accident: the needle bearing allows virtually frictionless movement, so the arm is pulled along purely by the rotation of the record — without back-pressure, without affecting the tracking force of your actual tonearm. The arm itself stays in place while the record passes beneath the brush. The result is permanent real-time cleaning that removes dust before it ever meets the stylus.

How It Works & The Physics
The problem this arm solves is physically straightforward, but practically stubborn: through the triboelectric effect, charge carriers accumulate on the PVC surface during playback — vinyl is an excellent insulator and cannot release these charges on its own. The result is a steadily building electrostatic voltage on the record, which attracts airborne dust particles almost magnetically. Without dissipation, these particles end up directly in the groove, where they are either ploughed through by the stylus and heard as pops, or settle in long-term and cause mechanical wear to the groove walls.
This is exactly where the combination of carbon fibres and grounding intervenes. Carbon is electrically conductive, the fine fibres reach into every groove and transfer the charge collected on the record, through the metallic components and the supplied ground cable, directly to the amplifier's earth point — from there, it flows away harmlessly. At the same time, the fibres sweep loose dust out of the groove and retain it on their surface until the brush is occasionally wiped clean. The audible result is a distinctly quieter presentation — fewer background artefacts, clearer high-frequency detail and genuinely clean resolution in the soft passages where every click matters.
Installation takes minutes and requires neither tools nor modification of the turntable itself. The self-adhesive, damped base is positioned next to the platter — placed so that the brush tip reaches approximately the centre of the record when swung in, covering the full playing radius. The damped construction prevents micro-vibrations from coupling into the plinth and disturbing the cartridge.
The arm is then aligned exactly parallel to the platter via its integrated height adjustment — important so that the carbon fibres make even contact across the full surface of the record and don't press too hard or too lightly on one side. The adjustment is continuously variable and accommodates turntables with different platter heights, from slim direct-drive designs to tall mass-loaded decks. Finally, the ground cable is routed to the earth terminal of the phono preamp or amplifier — and the brush is ready. In use, you simply lower the arm onto the record before playback begins, it tracks along automatically, and you lift it off at the end of the side.
Build, Contents & Context
Build quality is at a level rarely seen at this price point: all load-bearing metal components are made of aluminium (arm) and stainless steel (bearing point, fittings) — both electrically conductive and therefore integral to the dissipation chain. Plastic is used only where function demands it. As a practical bonus, Dynavox includes a stylus brush, allowing you to quickly dust the diamond tip between record sides — a sensible addition that carries the cleaning concept through to its logical conclusion.
The cleaning arm does not replace thorough wet cleaning for heavily soiled or used records — it is the everyday complement that prevents freshly washed records from gathering dust again between listening sessions. Regular listeners can leave the handheld carbon brush in its holder and still enjoy a consistently clean playback experience.
