Hi-Fi Accessories · Equipment Feet & Resonance Control

Every high-quality hi-fi component rests on an unremarkable problem: the surface it stands on. Amplifiers, turntables and DACs vibrate along with every mechanical excitation — from footfall to their own transformers to the structure-borne sound that the loudspeakers feed into the floor and rack. These micro-vibrations blur fine detail, cost spatial depth and soften the bass before the signal even reaches the output. The SSC Magicpoint goes to work exactly where sound is made and lost: at the interface between the component and its supporting surface.

The Magicpoint is the magnetically reinforced evolution of the proven String Suspension principle, with which German manufacturer SSC has been setting benchmarks in affordable resonance control since the mid-1990s. Inside a housing of anodised aluminium, a taut woven element drains incoming vibrations in every direction — augmented by two magnets arranged with opposing poles. These magnets take on part of the static load and so relieve the woven element. The result: significantly higher load capacity, faster energy dissipation and a sound that audibly gains in airiness and dynamics — developed specifically for heavy, demanding high-end components.

Technology & How It Works

The heart of every SSC product is the String Suspension woven element — an elastically tensioned carrier material that originally grew out of the rope technique used in SSC's first equipment bases. Unlike a rigid spike, which channels energy in only one direction, or a soft rubber foot, which damps only within a narrow frequency band, the woven element yields in a controlled way in all directions. It decouples the component from its supporting surface and converts vibrational energy across a broad band into friction heat, rather than reflecting it back into the chassis.

What sets the Magicpoint apart is its magnetic support. Two magnets arranged with opposing poles generate a load-bearing force inside the aluminium housing that takes up part of the component's weight. This frees the woven element from static load and keeps it within its optimal, freely moving working range — even when a heavy integrated amplifier or a massive turntable plinth rests on the foot. Magnetic load support and mechanical decoupling thus work hand in hand: the foot carries more while decoupling more freely. You hear this as a quieter, blacker background from which instruments emerge more tangibly, and as a tighter, better-defined bass.

The effect is not a matter of taste but of physics: less coupled-in vibration means less modulation of the wanted signal. Mechanically sensitive devices benefit most — the cartridge of a turntable, for instance, traces deflections in the micrometre range, and any external vibration that reaches it inevitably writes itself into the sound. But valve amplifiers, too, with their microphony-prone tubes, along with CD transports, DACs and streamers, respond to a calmer location with greater resolution and a more relaxed, effortless presentation.

The Three Variants

The Magicpoint is available in three versions that differ solely in their top — the contact point with the component. Housing, woven element and magnet technology are identical across all three, so your choice follows only the placement and the device in question:

Magicpoint 100 — felt top: The classic all-rounder. A felt pad on the upper side forms a gentle, defined contact point, protects sensitive cabinet bases and lacquered surfaces, and is ideal for simply placing electronics of all kinds.

Magicpoint 200 — screw function: The most flexible version. It can be placed freely as a puck or bolted directly to the component using the supplied thread adapters (M4, M6, M8) — for a fixed, rattle-free coupling. Important: the M4 thread may be screwed in by no more than 3 mm, since the magnet sits in the housing directly beneath it and could otherwise be damaged.

Magicpoint 300 — spike top: The version for devices and loudspeakers that already stand on spikes. A spike receptacle on the upper side captures the spike tip precisely and securely, so the Magicpoint's sonic gain can be combined with an existing spike coupling.

With a load capacity of up to 20 kg per foot, a set of four Magicpoints already covers a load range of around 80 kg — enough for almost any electronic component and many floorstanding speakers. Each Magicpoint is supplied individually (price per piece) and is available in black and silver, so the right set can be matched exactly to your device and the number required.
