Record weight - sound improvement through stability
A record weight is one of the most effective accessories for record players when it comes to sound optimization. It rests directly on the record label, increases the contact pressure on the platter support and thus ensures more stable tracking. The result: less distortion, smoother playback and a clearer sound - especially with slightly wavy records or records that are not exactly flat.
How does a record weight work?
A high-quality record weight exerts controlled pressure on the center of the record. As a result, the vinyl rests better on the turntable, micro-resonances are reduced and the needle can be guided more evenly in the groove. This is a real benefit in terms of sound, especially with slight vibrations or records that are not perfectly flat.
Difference to the record puck
While a record weight is effective due to its mass, a so-called puck is often placed over the center axis and is significantly lighter. Many record weights, on the other hand, are made of solid materials such as stainless steel, brass or aluminum and weigh between 300 and 900 grams. Depending on the type of drive, the higher weight can even provide additional smoothness - provided the bearing construction is suitable.
What you should look out for when buying
A good platter weight is not only precisely centered, but also designed in such a way that it does not cause any damage to the label or bearing. Non-slip pads, rubber rings or felt pads prevent damage. Compatibility with the turntable is also important: not all turntables are designed for particularly heavy weights.
