The Klangheimat - Extended

About us - The history of Klangheimat

Every company has a story. Some start with a business plan, an investor or a brilliant idea in the office. Ours began with a dusty hi-fi system from the eighties, a lot of tidy records - and the quiet desire to give life a rhythm again.

What emerged from this beginning is Klangheimat: an online store for audiophile sound carriers, hi-fi components and analog accessories - with over 10,000 items, a listening studio in Upper Bavaria and a clear mission: we give analog moments.

The beginnings

The origins of Klangheimat go back many years - to a time that I would describe as one of the most personally challenging of my life. What I had left back then could be reduced to a few objects: a dusty hi-fi system from the 1980s that had been leading a sad existence in the cellar.

It was a remarkable ensemble for its time: a massive Pioneer amplifier with a good 20 kilograms on its ribs, a Nakamichi tape deck - on which I had recorded the legendary HR3 club nights night after night in the glorious nineties - a pair of angular Canton loudspeakers in a respectable box shape and a Thorens record player. Dusted off, wired up, switched on.

The devices were alive again.

The realization

A lot of things in my life had fallen apart at that time. It was difficult to find my bearings. After work, I spent hours in front of this old system - in a time when music had long since gone digital. Spotify didn't exist yet, but as a trained IT specialist, I had been ripping CDs and archiving them on my hard drive for a long time. I was already consuming music like a stream: quickly, fleetingly, on the side.

Then I put on a record.

What I noticed about myself was difficult to describe at first - a kind of change in nature. A calmness. A concentration that I hadn't felt for a long time. While I zipped wildly through albums and playlists with my ripped files without ever really getting there, the record player forced me to a focus that I couldn't choose - it was just there.

The record's complex playback process forced a focus: on the music. Not on the album, not on the playlist - on the moment of listening itself.

The unique selling point of the vinyl record cannot be reduced to sound quality, data rate or the warmth of playback. It is - in a word - a haptic work of art. You hold it in your hand. You read the cover. You consciously choose what you want to listen to, because zapping is simply too inconvenient.

"If you want to listen to me, you'll have to decide who it should be beforehand. Zapping is not for me - I'm far too complicated for that. Take me or leave me."

A record is enjoyed. Streamed music is usually just consumed.

The vision & foundation

In the weeks that followed, an idea matured from this personal experience: to found a company that would give other people a similar experience. Real added value beyond products and prices. Slowing down by consciously listening to music - giving people back what the fast pace of everyday digital life seems to take away: the moment.

Listening to records and thinking about them, the company took shape. At that time, I came into contact with Günter Hannl - the creator of the world-famous Hannl Vinylcare record washing machines, for which I had already developed a deep fascination as a private individual. I had already bought one of his machines myself at that time - and it is still in daily use today.

Mr. Hannl mentioned that a record dealer friend was planning to close his store and that it might be worth a try to take over his remaining stock. What followed is one of the nicer start-up stories: I drove home with a fully loaded station wagon - the underbody grazing precariously close to the ground - the vehicle completely filled with records.

There was also a CD. On it: a copy of the complete online store audiophile-vinyl.de.

What I acquired, however, was a technical relic - a long outdated store system that no longer met current e-commerce requirements. I spent countless frustrated nights adapting and rebuilding it until it finally went online. I will never forget the feeling when the very first order came in.

The first records were packed in the living room and sent on their way to the customer. The business had begun.

Growth & development

The following years were not always smooth sailing - and that's putting it kindly. In a confusing jungle of advertising providers, marketing agencies, payment service providers and questionable partners, money disappeared into thin air faster than it came in. A painful process that is commonly referred to as a learning curve. We paid it. And learned.

An important decision emerged from this time: no longer to offer only sound carriers (software), but to venture into hardware - hi-fi systems, components, accessories. This step was to shape Klangheimat in the long term.

Today, Klangheimat can boast an all-encompassing vinyl range as a unique selling point - and is also strongly represented in the hi-fi equipment and accessories sector. We started out as a record store and developed into a comprehensive point of contact for analog music playback.

This development has always been in line with the original vision: to serve record listeners and offer them a special experience. That is why the entire orientation of Klangheimat is still strongly phonolastic and designed to meet the requirements of analog music playback. We do not demonize digital playback - it is fascinating and a constant companion in mobile form. But our heart beats analog.

It was not easy to find the right partners in an almost unmanageable variety of products and brands. The decisive factor was a rethink: from then on, we first looked at the people behind the distributors - before we thought about the product. We wanted to work with people we work with because of them. Not just because of what they offer.

This resulted in our current portfolio, where we work with valued colleagues and partners such as Sieveking Sound, Scheu Analog, Speakers Corner, Audiotrade and High Fidelity Studio - to name just a few. Behind these products are outstanding brands. Behind the brands are people. And most of their products are made by hand.

Our mission

Today, digitalization permeates every area of our lives. We want to take advantage of its positive aspects - but we also want to point out the shadow it casts: it forces us humans into ever faster clock rates that we are simply not up to in evolutionary terms. This leaves its mark.

We want to create a counterbalance: mindful spaces in which people can consciously withdraw into the moment. Through music. Through vinyl. Through the ritual experience of analog listening.

Today, Klangheimat offers over 10,000 items - vinyl records, hi-fi components, accessories and services - for which we manage the logistics locally or together with our partners. We have also had an eBay store since mid-2021. The story continues.

Unfortunately, a foray into stationary retail failed due to the wrong choice of location. Since then, we have focused entirely on online retail - and the success of recent years has proved us right. It has enabled us to invest massively in expanding our product range and further professionalize our processes.

Klangheimat Studio

Our hearing studio in Baiernrain near Holzkirchen in Upper Bavaria, where we offered demonstrations by appointment for many years, is currently closed. We regret this very much - the personal encounters with our customers and listening together were always something special.

If you have any questions about components, setups or requests for advice, we are of course still available via our ticket system or by e-mail.
