Which amplifier do I need for the Talisman-R?

Ruark recommends an amplifier power of 75 to 200 watts. With a nominal impedance of 6 ohms and a sensitivity of 87 dB, the Talisman-R benefits from an integrated amplifier with solid power reserves. This keeps the long-throw woofer under control at all times, even at higher volumes and during sudden dynamic swings.

What room size is the Talisman-R suited to?

With bass extension down to 35 Hz in the listening room and a 14.5-litre bass reflex cabinet, the Talisman-R shows its strengths most confidently in medium to large living spaces. Thanks to its slim 21 cm width, it also integrates well into smaller rooms, where a slightly greater distance from the wall helps keep the bass balanced.

How do I position the Talisman-R for best results?

As with any bass reflex speaker, the distance to the rear wall affects bass reproduction. A few tens of centimetres is a good starting point. Angling the speakers slightly towards the listening position gives precise centre imaging and a spacious soundstage. A little experimentation pays off, as every room sounds different.

How does the Talisman-R differ from the 1990 original?

The Talisman-R is the fourth generation of the classic. Its kinship with the original is clearly recognisable, but it has been comprehensively developed technically: new features include the decoupled baffle, the double-flared reflex port, the NS+ long-throw woofer and a crossover on a gold-plated board. The design has also been adapted to the aesthetics of the Ruark 100 Series.

What do the decoupled baffle and double-flared port do?

The decoupled baffle prevents driver vibrations from passing unhindered into the cabinet. This reduces resonances and colouration, so voices and instruments sound more natural. The reflex port, flared at both ends, reduces air turbulence and port noise, keeping the bass clean and well defined even on powerful transients.

Do I need an additional subwoofer?

For music playback in most living rooms, usually not. With a frequency response reaching down to 35 Hz, the Talisman-R reproduces the foundation of double bass, organ or electronic music with real weight. A subwoofer can be a worthwhile addition mainly in very large rooms or for home cinema use with deep effects.

Which finishes is the Talisman-R available in?

You can choose between warm Fused Walnut real wood veneer and a black finish. Both versions feature a removable grille of acoustically transparent fabric on a magnetic frame. This lets you present the speaker with a calm fabric front or with its drivers on show — without visible mounting holes.

Hi-Fi Loudspeakers · Floorstanding Speakers

Some loudspeakers disappear into the archives after a single generation — others write brand history. The Ruark Talisman clearly belongs to the latter. When it appeared in 1990, it stood out among the boxy speakers of the day like a statement: a slim profile, a sloping front baffle and a design language that showed a loudspeaker can be as much a piece of furniture as an instrument. That very ambition — to look as good as it sounds — has defined the British manufacturer ever since.

To mark its 40th anniversary, Ruark is bringing the icon back to life: the Talisman-R is the fourth generation of the legendary model. Its kinship with the original is evident at first glance, yet beneath the surface lie four decades of accumulated expertise: a two-way bass reflex system with a 165 mm NS+ long-throw woofer, a newly developed decoupled baffle and a double-flared reflex port. The refined design blends seamlessly with the aesthetics of the Ruark 100 Series — a floorstanding speaker for anyone who refuses to compromise on either sound or looks in their home.

Icon since 1990
Fourth generation of the classic — reissued for Ruark’s 40th anniversary
Bass down to 35 Hz
NS+ long-throw woofer and double-flared port for powerful, precise bass
Decoupled baffle
Newly developed to minimise cabinet resonances and colouration
From original to fourth generation

Ruark Audio was founded in the mid-1980s by brothers Brian and Alan O’Rourke in Essex, England — the brand name is derived from the family name. In its early years, Ruark built passive loudspeakers exclusively, and the Talisman became the model that shaped the brand’s identity like no other. Ruark later also made a name for itself with high-quality music systems guided by the same philosophy: craftsmanship, materials and sound as an inseparable whole.

With the Talisman-R, the circle is complete. Rather than a nostalgic replica, the result is a thoroughly refined loudspeaker in which musicality and design were given equal priority throughout development. It carries the DNA of the original, yet technically plays in a new league.

Sound & Technology

At the heart of the low end is the 165 mm (6.5") Ruark NS+ long-throw woofer. Its generous excursion lets it move plenty of air even at higher volumes without the bass becoming soft or strained. Combined with the 14.5-litre bass reflex cabinet tuned to 42 Hz, it reaches down to 35 Hz in the listening room — a remarkable figure for a slim two-way floorstander, lending real weight to double bass, organ and electronic music.

To keep this depth clean, Ruark relies on a double-flared reflex port. Rounded at both ends, it reduces air turbulence and port noise, so the bass stays well defined and free of chuffing even on powerful transients. The newly developed decoupled baffle prevents driver vibrations from passing unhindered into the cabinet — resonances are controlled, colouration is minimised, and voices and instruments sound more natural and more clearly layered.

The treble is handled by a 27 mm silk dome tweeter, prized for its smooth, effortless resolution: detailed but never harsh — ideal for long listening sessions. The handover between the two drivers is managed by an optimised second-order crossover at 2.2 kHz. It is built on a gold-plated circuit board and fitted with high-quality capacitors, resistors and low-loss inductors, so that as little of the music signal as possible is lost on its way to the drivers.

Design & Craftsmanship

Standing 85 cm tall yet only 21 cm wide, the Talisman-R looks slim and elegant — it fills the room with music without dominating it visually. The design draws on the styling of the Ruark 100 Series, making it a natural match for other Ruark components. Two finishes are available: warm Fused Walnut real wood veneer for a homely, crafted character, or understated black that suits modern interiors.

The grille of acoustically transparent fabric sits on a removable magnetic frame — with no visible mounting holes. Depending on your mood, the speaker can be presented with a calm fabric front or with its drivers on show. At 17.6 kg per speaker, the Talisman-R also stands solid and stable.

Placement & Amplification

With a nominal impedance of 6 ohms and a sensitivity of 87 dB (2.83 V / 1 m), the Talisman-R appreciates an amplifier with solid power reserves. Ruark recommends 75 to 200 watts — a capable integrated amplifier ensures the long-throw woofer stays in control at all times and dynamic swings are handled with ease.

As with any bass reflex speaker, the distance to the rear wall noticeably affects bass reproduction. A few tens of centimetres from the wall is a good starting point; a little experimentation and a slight toe-in towards the listening position will be rewarded with precise centre imaging and a spacious soundstage. Room size determines how much deep bass can actually develop — the Talisman-R shows its strengths most confidently in medium to large living spaces.
