Manual turntables
Analogue listening without compromise
A manual turntable is the first choice for music lovers who want to listen mindfully. The tonearm is guided by hand – for full control and a focus on the essentials. Our manual record players impress with technical precision and timeless design.
Reduced to the essentials
No automatic mechanism acts on the tonearm or the deck.
You decide when the tonearm sets down and lifts off.
Fewer moving parts mean less that can wear out.
Every record side becomes an attentive listening experience.
What is a manual turntable?
On a manual turntable, the tonearm is set down and lifted entirely by hand. There is no automatic start or stop function – everything happens deliberately and under control. Here is how it compares with the other types:
| Feature | Manual | Semi-automatic | Fully automatic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setting down the tonearm | By hand, usually via the lift | By hand | Automatically |
| At the end of the record | Lift off by hand | Arm lifts and returns | Arm lifts and returns |
| Mechanics at the tonearm | None additional | Some | The most |
| Ideal for | Purists and sound-focused listeners | Convenience at the end of the record | Maximum convenience |
Why choose a manual record player?
Manual turntables enjoy a special reputation among many audiophiles. The reason is mechanical: without automation, no additional levers, clutches or cams act on tonearm and deck. This saves friction and possible sources of resonance – and gives designers more freedom:
Nothing brakes or influences the tonearm – it can follow the groove undisturbed.
Fewer components allow a consistent focus on calm running and rigidity.
Many manual turntables allow the tonearm or cartridge to be changed.
Robust, simple mechanics stay reliable for decades.
How easy it is to operate
“Manual” sounds demanding – but it isn’t. With the tonearm lift, setting down is safe and gentle; after just a few records it becomes a familiar ritual:
Place the record on the platter, open the dust cover
Select the speed and switch on the motor
Move the tonearm over the lead-in groove using the lift
Gently lower the lift – the music begins
At the end, raise the lift and return the arm to its rest
A tip: if you don’t want to get up at the end of the record, many manual turntables can be fitted with a retrofit tonearm lifter that automatically raises the arm in the run-out groove.

Frequently asked questions about manual turntables
What is the difference between a manual and an automatic turntable?
On a manual turntable you set the tonearm down by hand and lift it again at the end. Semi- and fully automatic models take over the lift-off or the entire sequence by mechanics or electronics.
Do manual turntables sound better?
Many audiophiles prefer them because no automatic mechanism acts on tonearm and deck. How good a turntable sounds, however, depends above all on deck, tonearm, cartridge and alignment – good automatic models can sound excellent too.
Is a manual turntable suitable for beginners?
Yes. With the tonearm lift, setting down is easy and safe. Many entry-level models come with a pre-mounted cartridge and some with a built-in phono stage.
What happens if I don’t lift the tonearm at the end?
The stylus keeps running in the run-out groove. This usually doesn’t harm the record but puts unnecessary wear on the stylus. So lift the arm promptly – or retrofit an automatic tonearm lifter.
What is the tonearm lift for?
The lift lowers the tonearm onto the record in a damped, controlled way and raises it again. This spares stylus and groove and makes cueing safe even for beginners.
Can I change the cartridge later?
On most manual turntables, yes. Many higher-end models also allow the tonearm to be changed. We are happy to advise you on the right combination.
Do I need a phono stage?
Yes, unless your amplifier has a phono input or your turntable has a built-in phono stage. It amplifies the very weak cartridge signal and equalises it according to the RIAA curve.
Which brand is right for me?
That depends on budget, sound preferences and design. Pro-Ject offers an especially wide range, Rega a purist approach, Technics precise direct drives, Thorens and Feickert classic and high-end turntables. We are happy to help you choose.
