At a glance
Two layers
A high-resolution SACD layer and a CD layer – stacked on a single disc.
Plays almost anywhere
The CD layer plays in any CD player, in the car and on a computer.
DSD resolution
The SACD layer stores music as a DSD data stream at 2.8 MHz – often in multichannel as well.
Carefully mastered
Many audiophile editions are based on new masterings, often made directly from the original tapes.
01
What is a hybrid SACD?
The Super Audio CD was introduced by Sony and Philips in 1999 as the high-resolution successor to the CD. Instead of PCM it uses Direct Stream Digital (DSD): a 1-bit data stream at 2.8224 MHz – 64 times the CD sampling rate.
A hybrid SACD carries two layers, one above the other. The semi-transparent SACD layer sits in the middle of the disc and is read by the 650 nm laser of an SACD player. The 780 nm laser of a CD player “sees” straight through it and reads the CD layer above – so the same disc plays in both worlds.
02
Which player plays what?
The big advantage of a hybrid SACD: you don't have to choose. Every disc grows with your system – and sounds as good on each device as that device allows.
CD player, car stereo, PC
Plays the CD layer in familiar CD quality – without restrictions.
SACD player
Reads both layers. A button lets you switch between SACD and CD, often also between stereo and multichannel.
Universal & Blu-ray players
Some models support SACD, many do not – it is worth checking the specifications.
How to hear the SACD layer
Choose an SACD-capable player
Only an SACD player or an SACD-capable universal player reads the high-resolution layer.
Select the layer
Many players start with the SACD layer automatically. The display shows which layer is playing.
Stereo or multichannel
If the disc contains a multichannel mix, select the stereo or multichannel area on the player.
Connect correctly
For copy-protection reasons, many players do not output the SACD layer via coaxial or optical digital outputs. The analogue outputs deliver full quality – depending on the device, HDMI does too.
03
The format is only half the story
How good a hybrid SACD sounds depends above all on the mastering. Audiophile labels often go back to the original master tapes and create a new, sensitive master – without the extreme loudness of many modern releases.
Both layers benefit: SACD and CD layer often come from the same new master. That is why even the CD layer of a well-made hybrid SACD can sound audibly better than an older standard CD of the same album.

Labels with a hybrid SACD tradition
Hybrid SACDs appear above all on labels fully dedicated to sound quality. A few names you will come across again and again:
Analogue Productions
US label known for elaborate new masterings of classic jazz, blues and rock recordings.
Mobile Fidelity
Long-established US audiophile label with the hybrid SACD series “Ultradisc UHR”.
Pentatone
Dutch classical label that has backed SACD and multichannel from the very beginning.
Channel Classics
Dutch label whose classical recordings are consistently produced in DSD.
BIS
Swedish classical label with a large catalogue of hybrid SACDs, many of them multichannel.
Our selection changes constantly – many titles are released in limited editions and are hard to find again once sold out.

Care & storage
Hybrid SACDs are as robust as an ordinary CD – with a little care they will accompany you for a lifetime.
Hold by the edge
Avoid fingerprints on the playing side – hold the disc by its edge and centre hole.
Protect the label side
The CD layer lies just beneath the label. Scratches or pressure on the top side can damage it.
Clean correctly
Wipe in straight lines from the centre outwards with a soft microfibre cloth – never in circles, no solvents.
Store upright
In its case, upright, cool and out of direct sunlight – this keeps the disc ready to play for decades.

Frequently asked questions about hybrid SACDs
What is a hybrid SACD?
A disc with two layers: a high-resolution SACD layer in DSD format and a conventional CD layer. SACD players read the SACD layer, all other CD players read the CD layer.
Can I play a hybrid SACD in any CD player?
Yes. The CD layer follows the normal CD standard and plays in CD players, car stereos and computer drives.
Do I need a special player for the SACD layer?
Yes – an SACD player or an SACD-capable universal player. Many Blu-ray players do not support SACD; the specifications will tell you.
Does the CD layer sound like a normal CD?
Technically it is a normal CD with 16-bit and 44.1 kHz. Because it often comes from the same careful new mastering as the SACD layer, it frequently sounds better than older standard CDs of the same album.
What does multichannel mean on an SACD?
Many SACDs contain a multichannel mix alongside the stereo version, usually in 5.1. You can hear it via an SACD player with multichannel outputs or via HDMI on a suitable surround system.
Can I rip the SACD layer on a computer?
No. Computer drives only read the CD layer. The SACD layer is copy-protected and can only be played back on an SACD-capable player.
What is the difference between a hybrid and a single-layer SACD?
A single-layer SACD has only the SACD layer and plays exclusively in SACD-capable players. The hybrid SACD also has the CD layer, which makes it universally playable.
How do I know which layer my player is playing?
Most SACD players show “SACD” or “CD” in the display and have a button for switching layers. Many start with the SACD layer automatically.
