Single-layer SACD – pure DSD sound for audiophiles
No compromises, no CD layer – just music in high-resolution DSD.
Discover the world of single-layer SACDs: discs with a single layer devoted entirely to DSD sound. The CD layer is deliberately omitted – the disc is made exclusively for SACD-capable players.
A treasure for anyone who values fidelity and fine musical detail – and owns an SACD-capable system.
At a glance
Pure DSD layer
Just one layer, fully reflective and dedicated solely to the high-resolution DSD data stream.
SACD players only
Without a CD layer the disc only plays in SACD-capable devices – CD players do not recognise it.
Often in stereo
Many editions focus on a pure 2-channel stereo version – true to the original.
Sought-after editions
Numerous, often limited single-layer editions with new masterings come from Japan in particular.
01
What is a single-layer SACD?
The Super Audio CD stores music in Direct Stream Digital (DSD) format – a 1-bit data stream at 2.8224 MHz. While the widespread hybrid SACD also carries a CD layer, the single-layer SACD has just one layer: the DSD layer.
Because no CD laser needs to see through it, this layer is fully reflective rather than semi-transparent. Besides single-layer and hybrid discs, there is also the rare dual-layer SACD with two DSD layers for particularly long programmes.
02
Uncompromising sound – an honest look
Single-layer SACDs are considered particularly purist among collectors. Choosing this format means going all-in on DSD and deliberately doing without CD compatibility. What does that mean for the sound?
Same format
The DSD layer of a single-layer SACD is technically identical to the SACD layer of a hybrid disc.
Strong read signal
The fully reflective layer gives the laser a strong signal – an argument many producers put forward.
Mastering decides
Source and mastering make the biggest difference – many single-layer editions are based on careful new masterings.
Our verdict: a single-layer SACD is not a sonic miracle by definition – but it is often a particularly carefully produced edition. Japanese releases in particular, such as SHM-SACDs, have frequently appeared as single-layer discs in pure stereo and are highly sought after by collectors.
03
Compatibility – check before you buy
Because the CD layer is missing, the single-layer SACD depends on SACD-capable devices. An ordinary CD player does not recognise the disc and usually reports “No Disc” or a read error.
Tip: you hear the full quality of the DSD layer via the analogue outputs of your SACD player or – depending on the device – via HDMI. For copy-protection reasons, many players do not output the SACD layer via coaxial or optical digital outputs.
04
Who is the single-layer SACD for?
Single-layer SACDs are made for audiophile music lovers who want to enjoy musical masterpieces without compromise – on a high-quality, SACD-capable hi-fi system.
Audiophiles with an SACD player
You already own an SACD-capable system and want to enjoy the format directly.
Collectors of special editions
Limited, often Japanese editions with elaborate presentation and new masterings.
Stereo purists
Many single-layer titles focus on a pure 2-channel version – just as the recording was intended.

Frequently asked questions about single-layer SACDs
What is a single-layer SACD?
A Super Audio CD with just one layer in high-resolution DSD format. Unlike the hybrid SACD, it has no additional CD layer.
Can I play a single-layer SACD in a CD player?
No. Without a CD layer, the laser of a CD player finds no readable data – usually “No Disc” or an error message appears. You need an SACD-capable player.
Does a single-layer SACD sound better than a hybrid SACD?
The audio format is identical. The fully reflective layer provides a particularly strong read signal; whether that is audible is debated among listeners. Source and mastering of the edition have the greatest influence.
Which players play single-layer SACDs?
All SACD players and universal players with SACD support. Many Blu-ray and DVD players cannot play SACD – if in doubt, check your device's specifications.
Are single-layer SACDs always stereo?
No, but very many are. Japanese single-layer editions in particular often contain only the stereo version. Whether a title also offers multichannel is stated in the product description.
What is an SHM-SACD?
A Japanese SACD edition made from an especially transparent polycarbonate (“Super High Material”). SHM-SACDs often appear as single-layer discs in stereo and are highly sought after by collectors.
How do I recognise a single-layer SACD?
By the note “Single Layer” on the cover or disc. Hybrid discs, by contrast, usually say “Hybrid” or “CD compatible”. Our product pages state the format.
Can I play or rip a single-layer SACD on a computer?
No. Computer drives cannot read the SACD layer. Playback is only possible with an SACD-capable player.
