01 · Sound

Why reel-to-reel tapes sound so special

Many audiophiles value tape as a cultural artefact and a sonic reference format. The return to these classic media is not mere nostalgia – it is an expression of genuine passion for music. Audiophile reel-to-reel tapes let you enjoy music in its purest form – rich in detail, room-filling and unadulterated.

The reason lies in the journey from the studio to you: for decades, tape was the medium on which music was recorded, mixed and mastered. An audiophile tape copy is made directly from the master tape or a copy of it, usually one tape at a time in real time. There is no record cutting, no tracking by a stylus, no inner-groove distortion and no digital intermediate stage.

The result is a sound with great dynamics, a spacious soundstage and a rich, natural timbre – often described as the most direct way to hear a recording just as it sounded in the control room.

02 · History

From the broadcast studio to the living room

1935
The Magnetophon
AEG presents the Magnetophon K1 at the Berlin Radio Exhibition, with tape supplied by BASF.
1940
The leap in sound
High-frequency AC bias drastically reduces noise and distortion – tape becomes fit for hi-fi.
1950s
Studio standard
Broadcasters and record companies record on tape. Pre-recorded tapes for home use come onto the market.
Today
The revival
Specialist labels are copying master tapes anew and fresh tape stock is being produced again – reel-to-reel is making a comeback.
03 · Formats

Understanding tape formats

For a tape to sound its best on your machine, a few technical specifications need to match. These are the features you’ll find with audiophile tapes:

Feature Variants What to look out for
Tape speed 38 cm/s (15 ips), 19 cm/s (7.5 ips) Your machine must support the speed. 38 cm/s is regarded as the studio reference.
Track format 2-track (half-track), 4-track (quarter-track) Audiophile tapes are mostly 2-track – a matching 2-track machine is ideal.
Equalisation CCIR / IEC 1 (Europe), NAB (USA) Set the playback equalisation to match the tape, otherwise the tonal balance will be off.
Reel size 26.5 cm (10.5 inches), 18 cm (7 inches) 26.5 cm reels require large reel tables.
Reel hub NAB hub, AEG/Bobby hub Depending on the hub, use a NAB adapter or a suitable mount.
Tape width 6.3 mm (1/4 inch) The standard for home and studio machines – fits common equipment.

Tip: you’ll find the relevant details in each product description. If in doubt, we’ll be happy to help you choose.

04 · Playback

How to get the best from audiophile reel-to-reel tapes

1
Set up the machine. Match the machine’s speed, track format and equalisation to the tape – only then will tonal balance and levels be correct.
2
Clean the tape path. Clean the heads, capstan, pinch roller and tape guides regularly with isopropyl alcohol. Oxide shedding costs treble and can soil the tape.
3
Demagnetise the heads. A demagnetiser prevents residual magnetism in heads and guides from transferring to the recording and erasing fine treble detail.
4
Wind gently. For storage, the even winding produced during playback is ideal – many collectors therefore store tapes ‘tail out’ and only rewind them before the next listen.
5
Store correctly. Upright in the original box, cool, dry and away from loudspeakers and other magnetic fields – this keeps the tape ready to play for decades.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about audiophile reel-to-reel tapes

What is an audiophile reel-to-reel tape?
An audiophile reel-to-reel tape is a pre-recorded tape copy made directly from the master tape or a copy of it – usually in real time, at 19 or 38 cm/s and on high-quality tape stock. This brings the sound closer to the studio original than almost any other sound carrier.
Does a reel-to-reel tape sound better than a vinyl record?
A well-made tape avoids the compromises of record cutting: there is no tracking by a stylus, no inner-groove distortion and no limitation of bass dynamics imposed by groove geometry. Many listeners describe the sound as more open, dynamic and spacious. How big the difference is, however, also depends on the recording, the copy and the tape machine.
Which tape machine do I need for audiophile tapes?
A machine that matches the tape’s format: tape speed (usually 19 or 38 cm/s), track format (2-track or 4-track), equalisation (CCIR or NAB) and reel size (18 or 26.5 cm). For most audiophile tapes, a 2-track stereo machine running at 38 cm/s with room for 26.5 cm reels is ideal.
What is the difference between 19 and 38 cm/s?
The faster the tape runs, the more tape is available per second of music. 38 cm/s offers more dynamics, finer treble and less tape hiss, and is the classic studio standard. 19 cm/s also sounds very good, but gives twice the playing time on the same reel.
What do CCIR and NAB mean?
CCIR (also IEC 1) and NAB are two equalisation standards for recording and playback. CCIR was widespread mainly in Europe, NAB in North America. A tape only sounds tonally correct when the machine plays it back with the same equalisation it was recorded with – with the wrong setting, the treble sounds too bright or too dull.
What is the difference between 2-track and 4-track?
With 2-track (half-track), the stereo signal uses the full tape width in one direction – giving more dynamics and less noise, which is why it is standard for audiophile tapes. With 4-track (quarter-track), there are two stereo tracks per direction on the tape, and the tape is turned over. A 4-track machine can play 2-track tapes, but not optimally.
Do 26.5 cm reels fit every tape machine?
No. Many home machines only take reels up to 18 cm. 26.5 cm reels require a machine with large reel tables and, depending on the reel, a NAB adapter or a suitable Bobby hub. So check which reel size your machine supports before buying.
How should I store reel-to-reel tapes?
Upright in the original box, cool, dry and protected from light – ideally at around 15 to 22 °C with moderate humidity. Keep them away from loudspeakers, power supplies and other magnetic fields. Many collectors store their tapes unrewound after playing, i.e. ‘tail out’, and only rewind them before the next listen – the even winding during playback is gentle on the tape.
