grell OAE2: The headphones that sound like speakers - New from us

Nov 5, 2025

grell OAE2 - Headphones rethought: When space, stage and goosebumps come together 🎧

The key messages at a glance:

  • FSFM (Frontal Sound Field Modulation) moves the driver acoustically "in front" of the ear and mimics the sound generation in the room.
  • New driver positioning with precise geometry for authentic images - just like listening with high-quality loudspeakers.
  • More natural tonality & reduced in-head localization: voices are in front of you, not in your head.
  • Developed by Axel Grell: decades of high-end expertise in a radically fresh concept.
  • From December 2025 at Klangheimat - with selected listening appointments and advice.

Introduction: Why we think the OAE2 is an event ✨

Every now and then a product appears that doesn't think in existing categories, but rewrites them. grell is exactly the right environment for this: behind the brand is Axel Grell, whose signature has shaped legendary high-end headphones. With the grell OAE2, he goes one step further and challenges the classic headphone design. The goal is as bold as it is understandable: headphones that sound so naturally spacious and natural that you are reminded of good loudspeakers - and that is exactly what the OAE2 does with its front sound field modulation (FSFM). 🎼

The basic problem with classic headphones - and how the OAE2 addresses it 🧭

Anyone who listens through headphones knows the effect: in-head localization. Sound sources seem to be stuck between the ears, voices sit in the head, spatial information is compressed. There are physical reasons for this: Drivers radiate very close to the ear canal, which means that the outer ear, the pinna, is hardly involved in shaping the sound image. However, it is precisely this pinna that gives us direction, distance and air when listening to loudspeakers. This is where the OAE2 comes in - and acoustically shifts the sound generation "to the front".

FSFM - Frontal sound field modulation: How "front" is created in headphones 🔬

FSFM is not a marketing term, but an acoustic architecture. The idea: driver, sound guide and housing together form a source that addresses the ear from the front. The crucial point is the temporal and spectral shaping of the sound before it interacts with the pinna. This results in early reflection and time-of-flight cues that we are familiar with from listening to loudspeakers. What happens as a result feels amazingly familiar: The stage detaches itself from your head, voices and instruments are in front of you, localization becomes stable, even with complex orchestral colors. 🎻

Driver positioning & geometry: small angles, big effect

In the OAE2, the dispersion angle, distance and sound guidance are tuned so that the pinna can do its "job". Unlike strongly angled capsules, which often only rotate the axis, the OAE2 modulates the sound front. The geometry ensures that tonal balance and spatiality are not played off against each other. In the listening test, the effect is as if a well set-up pair of compact loudspeakers were playing slightly in front of you: the phantom center is in place, lateral separation is a matter of course, depth separation (front-center-background) becomes tangible.

The sound signature: neutrality with warmth, precision without sterility 🎚️

The tonal signature of the OAE2 is reminiscent of the school that Axel Grell has refined over decades: neutral at its core, with subtle warmth in the fundamental tone for body and substance. Mids are expressive and textured, voices are realistic in size, sibilants remain natural. Highs resolve finely without "sparkling", low bass is controlled, differentiated and reaches deep enough to separate organ pedals, double bass bows and synth layers cleanly. The decisive factor is how FSFM carries the spatiality: The finest ambience information, reverb tails and hall breathing are given space and air - without exaggeration.

From jazz clubs to Mahler: practical listening scenes 🎙️

Vocal jazz: A stable center image is created on a powerful Diana Krall or Patricia Barber pressing; the voice breathes in front of you, the piano spans the stage in a realistic width. Classical music: In a string quartet, you can hear the internal spaces between the instruments; bow noises are in the room, not in your head. Symphonic music benefits from the depth perspective: horns at the back left, wood in the middle, basses in the body - an organic orchestral image. Rock: Good 70s productions show how cleanly the OAE2 separates guitar layers; cymbals are high and slightly in front, the bass remains tight. 💿

Comfort, materiality and fit: high-end that you can feel 🛠️

Headphones that paint a stage up front must also be suitable for long-term use. The OAE2 is comfortable to wear with low contact pressure and an adjustable headband that fits evenly. Ear pads made of breathable composite materials keep heat in check; the housing construction feels both stiff and low-resonance. Those who love long vinyl sessions will hardly feel any fatigue thanks to the weight distribution and soft support - important when the music makes you lose track of time for an evening. 🕰️

Synergy: Sources, amplifier, phono & streaming - how to get everything out of the OAE2

The OAE2 is honest - it shows the quality of the chain. On a good phono branch with a carefully adjusted cartridge (azimuth, VTA), it benefits from microdynamic contrasts and the finest groove information. High-quality headphone amplifiers (whether discrete Class-A or clean THX topologies) provide the necessary headroom for FSFM to fully develop its spatial effect. Digitally, the OAE2 benefits from clean clocking and precise filtering - if you can switch between apodized, linear phase and minimum phase, you can hear how room contours vary minimally. Vinyl fans should take a look at our store: high-quality hi-fi accessories round off the chain.

Comparative perspectives: What makes the OAE2 different from "classic" high-end headphones?

Many top headphones optimize drivers, diaphragms and magnet systems - and rightly so. The OAE2 takes an additional approach to sound generation. While classic concepts often draw the stage between the ears, FSFM shifts the perception to the front. This changes the fidelity of voices and acoustic instruments. This is not an "effect", but a different logic of perception. Anyone who loves loudspeakers but often resorts to headphones out of consideration (neighbors, family, room) will find an emotional bridge between the worlds in the OAE2.

Practice: There's no set-up - but positioning anyway

Even if headphones are not positioned in the room, the OAE2 reacts sensitively to acoustic "fit & seal". A small pad shift can minimally change the stage height; wearers of glasses should pay attention to tightness. On the cable side, we recommend low-capacitance, mechanically quiet cables; jack/XLR depending on the amplifier.
